The Complete Lack of a Running Game

The O-line was an unmitigated disaster last night. Gall, in particular, was being blown backwards every other other play. Coley has his faults, but this one was on the guys up front getting dominated by FSU.

For whatever reason (RINGS!!! BLEEDS ORANGE AND GREEN1111) it is sacrosanct to criticize Art Kehoe on this board but last night was proof positive that he is overrated as an OL coach. Our running game gets stuffed any time we face a decent DL. With that said, Coley isn't blameless either.

Coley. He knew going in Gall is a liability on zone run blocking from the shotgun. The Cincinnati game proved that. He should have run from the I formation or Pistol more. I had lots of Makers Mark but I'm pretty sure Yearby's only gains came from the Pistol.

Part scheme, part personnel. Gall is horrible. I don't know enough about the nuances about blocking schemes, but I'm sure there is a style better suited to our personnel. I mean we couldn't get a rushing game against 6-7 man fronts all night long. It's not like they were stacking the box.

Our o line is horrible, but Yearby seems to have no vision. There were holes there. He just seemed to run where there was none. He needs to learn how to plant and get north. He is always getting tackled and falling towards the sidelines. Those extra yards falling forward are sometimes the difference between winning and losing.

It was in pass protect but I'm going to have nightmares for a long time about freakin' Josh Sweat completely abusing Trevor Darling.

The only thing the oline did well was in pass protection, Kaaya had plenty of time most of the night, but sometimes he's like a statue back there.

The run game was non existent though, Yearby had no where to go. I hate calling out players, but Gall is not good at all. He takes bad penalties and gets pushed around like a doll.

It's interesting bc usually he does have pretty good vision and goes forward for yards.

However, last night I agree. A lot of times there wasn't much there, but there were other times where he was just missing the hole or was cutting the wrong way and going directly into traffic. He was zigging when he should have been zagging.

That said, I like him as a rb and usually he makes the right play. Last night was just an off night unfortunately

Well when a recruit that we missed out on has a poor running performance it means he was overrated and struggles against legit opponents...sooooo...

I blame this performance on Yearby!

Here's my issue with Kehoe and I do love the guy but....he always seems to be judged (recently) on improvement of his unit. It's seemingly always a work in progress with people only judging Kehoe on the points where the line starts to click and then we start all over the next season. He's getting decent recruits (which he gets some credit for) but we just haven't had the consistency in college football that you need from the start of the year. I have no issue now if he isn't retained by the next coach.

Oline was horrible. Blame enough for all concerned. Running well on of a constant shotgun is not Cane football. It seems like Coley and Al gave up on the run game and have placed Kaaya on altar for sacrifice.

They've begun playing him more and more. That kid is a baller though and future top 10 or even 5 pick barring injury.

Agree wholeheartedly with the bolded sentence.

I think there are scheme issues - mainly predictability.
I think there are personnel issues:

1. OL is a bad situation right now. We have a bunch of guards alternating at LT. I think Darling is a Guard or maybe a RT. As soon as they lose their next ACC game, they should strongly consider going with St. Louis at LT. They probably won't because they may not care to build the program anymore. Mcerdmott or Darling need to replace Gall, who is getting dominated.

2. Understated, at times, but we need a RB who can beat angles or get YAC. Yearby is a good player, no doubt. Against a team like FSU, he's going to struggle in our situation. He was dodging defenders in the backfield and doesn't have the big play ability to rip a 60-70 yarder that changes the game.

The blocking is horrendous and it has been that way all season. FSU just had the talent on D to make it look so inferior on almost every play. No one was getting to the 2nd level and on top of that. Coley never calls plays to take advantage of what defense are doing as well as Kaaya thinking he is Peyton Manning and changing ****. Some draws would have worked really well last night.
