The disappointment of the 2004 class. We all know that Willie Williams had the talent to have been an all-timer, but man was he a miss. The entire RB group of that class was a monumental disaster. We signed 3 top 100 backs and 4 of the top 25 prospects and none of them did a **** thing here. Bobby Washington, Charlie Jones, Thomas from Louisiana and the sprinter from Pittsburgh all busted. I remember how hyped I was over that class on signing day. I crowed our RB room the stud stable fully believing that they were going to be difference makers. Man was I wrong. I still have the highlight DVD from that class around my house somewhere. I thought Lance Leggett was going to be Randy Moss 2.0 or at worst Lamar Thomas. Man was I wrong. LOL.

A few of note I recall, in no particular order:
  • Denver Kirkland
  • Jacoby Brissett - Al Golden miss in Year 1
  • Dalvin Cook - submitting multiple signed pre-LOIs (back when that was a thing)
  • Tyson Campbell - Mike Rumph saga
  • Sony Michel taking the UGA bag

Our culture was sinking to an all-time low. We recruited off of rankings lists. We brought in guys with terrible work ethic/attitudes, and then we added a bad team culture. We didn’t get serious players. We got guys who wanted to be in Miami, or south beach, or some such nonsense. But they weren’t grinders, and it showed on and off the field.

The JR Mounts thing was bizarre too. IIRC he committed out of nowhere, we convinced ourselves he was the second coming at RB, he enrolled early, then quit two days into spring practice in '02

Outside of 30 years but this guy I got to know swore that after Derrick Brooks took his visit here he loved it and wanted to come here. Said he kept talking about how much he liked everything about his visit. The only reason he didn’t commit was because it was too far from home. (He and DB met in high school and took their visits to FSU, UF and ND together and fwiw the guy was not a UM fan by any stretch… couldn’t stand us)

What could have been.
