The Bank (3/18)

Aren’t we after more linebackers? And I had the same question on Thompson. Is this a situation where we are shooting our shot out of state? Or is south florida down?

I wonder how hard we pursue Gamble. I read that his mom is a lawyer who specializes in IP/NIL and driving his recruitment.

Where was he a 5*?

247. For the entirety of 2017. Before the inevitable "but he picked Miami, knock him down a few pegs" last-minute reaction.

What a bust...

Absolutely.

Some posters with poor memories like to act as if we just imagined this stuff. As if Mark Pope wasn't a 5-star on Rivals. As if Mark Pope wasn't a 5-star (until the final re-rank) on 247 for his entire senior year. The only thing holding Mark Pope back from being a consensus 5-star was ESPN, the worst of the three rating services (at the time, and probably still).

Now, whether the kid was a bust later, well that's a different story. But he was very highly rated in HS by the two primary rating services.

I remeber his recruitment vividly. He was one of those "if we can't close the deal on this kid fire the whole staff" situations here. His numbers were underwhelming but we needeed a high profile recruiting "win" since he did apparently have a legit Bama offer. I remember his film thinking okay, staright line fast, not sure what else I'm missing. But of course he was a "5 star" so I was on board too. Him and Dee Wiggins on the field at the same time was one of the most depressing situations. Because every now and then they *did* make a big play. And you just figured one of them could bust out any time. Pope did have reasonalbe numbers for like a 3rd WR in 2020 and Ed Reed "mentored" him in the off-season which led to him doing nothing, trying to be a DB, then transferring to Jasckson State and doing nothing there.

Wrap up the locals like Johnson, Hyppolite, and Gourdine asap. Then lets go full on big trophy hunting all summer 🙌
honestly, I like putting the full court pressure on all and all things equal, first in wins. Want more like NL who are in early.

Recruiting is about to kick into high gear with a flurry of spring visits on deck. Here is the latest:

- There are three names to monitor at quarterback: Will Mencl (Chandler, AZ), Davin Davidson (Sarasota, FL) and Israel Abrams (Chicago, IL). Davidson has been on campus and Mencl and Abrams have visits on deck. It's still too early to call this one, as the visits are key and the QB position is always subject to dominoes falling at other schools. But these are the names in play right now.

- RB Myson Johnson-Cook (East St. Louis, IL) remains a monster priority and has two more visits on deck. Tyson Robinson (Jackson, MS) and Elijah Kimble (Buffalo, NY) remain top targets. Two new names to monitor: David Segarra (Greenville, SC) and Brennan Lacey (Dallas, TX). Lacey lives with the family of Las Vegas Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty.

- The Canes continue to evaluate their needs at wide receiver, given the abundant talent on campus with multiple years of eligibility and the massive commitment of Nick Lennear (Carol City). Tre Moore (Austin, TX) is a name with a lot of momentum. The staff also has high grades on Kesean Bowman (Nashville, TN) and Dakota Guerrant (Detroit, MI). One name to add to the board: Antayvious Ellis (Fort Worth, TX). I do not expect us to pursue Monshun Sales (Indianapolis, IN).

- The tight end situation is the same. DeMarcus DeRoche (Cardinal Gibbons) is committed and Anthony Cartwright (Detroit, MI) is a versatile, big-bodied target who brings something different to the room. There is still mutual interest with Jaxon Dollar (Charlotte, NC), who is an elite talent. There will be a heavy market there. On the current team, the Canes love the athleticism that Israel Briggs and Gavin Mueller are showing in workouts.

- Mark Matthews (STA) and Sean Tatum (Fort Pierce) remain extremely high priorities and the Canes are pushing hard. I like Miami for both at this stage. One name to add to the board: 6'6, 310-pound Tyler Ford (Gainesville, GA).

- At defensive end, Miami continues to push for elite targets like DJ Jacobs (Atlanta, GA), Jaiden Bryant (Columbia, SC) and Marcus Fakatou (Los Angeles, CA). The Canes got an in-person look at local sack artist Trevoris Finley (Carol City) at 305 Day and liked what they saw.

- At defensive tackle, the Canes will continue to push for names like Jalen Brewster (Dallas, TX). But I'm told that Josh Johnson (Key West, FL) and Xavier Perkins (Durham, NC) are high-priority takes regardless of who else is on the board. The staff also loves Stive-Bentley Keumajou Yondui (Coral Gables), a 6'3, 300-pounder from England who plays soccer and basketball and also kicks and punts. Ezekiel Ayangbile (Houston, TX) is also a target.

- The linebacker board hasn't changed much, although the recruitment of Kaden Henderson (Tampa) continues to surge.

- At defensive back, some names to monitor are Nash Johnson (Atlanta, GA, Alabama commit), Aamaury Fountain (Macon, GA, South Carolina commit), Zayden Gamble (STA), Gabe Osborne (Oklahoma City, OK), and Sherrod Gourdine (MacArthur). I don't see Miami pursuing KJ Caldwell (Atlanta, GA) or Larry Moon (IMG).

Good to see the boy from key west is a high priority . That’s what’s I wanted to hear when I said something about the talent he plays in that area . If he’s high priority he’s not a 3 year development kid like jones was to not cut it . Regardless of his 3 star rankings , he must be a stud if he’s a high priority for staff . Bet he make 4 star by the end of the year. I love it when our staff finds studs like this . I bet some of those ol will end up being studs they we got last year too

How did Thomas turn out or that one who fck us and took off to Maryland 😂Wiley is bigger and better than Thomas . Not in to 200 pound 5 star lbs who don’t have the frame to put on 40 pounds

Size wasn’t Thomas problem he ended up about 230. And we hope Wiley will be better but he hasn’t proven anything yet. Thomas was the better prospect out of hs
