The Athletic: Sam Leavitt possibly to Miami or TTU

Question on how long Leavitt will be out. IIRC he won't be back to practicing as quickly as Beck was and therefore will have less time to sync with the receivers.

Fletcher had the same injury in December 2023 and practiced in August 2024 and played on 8/31 - basically exactly 8 months later. 7 months before he was full speed and cleared for practice.

But it was a surprise he was ready to go so soon. RB is different than QB obviously.

Leavitt's injury happened in late October so assuming April-May before he's fully cleared. Spring practice is usually early March - mid-April. All but guaranteed to miss it entirely.

Aside from comparing Fletcher - it's typically a 8-10 month injury in general. Not super common for QBs.

Sam Leavitt does not fit Dawsons system, he is not accurate enough. Leavitt has a 61.4% career completion percentage.

Here are the completion percentage for every QB Dawson has started, for a full season, as a P4 OC.
  • 2012 West Virginia: Geno Smith 71.2%
  • 2014 West Virginia: Clint Trickett 67.1%
  • 2021 Houston: Clayton Tune 68.2%
  • 2022 Houston: Clayton Tune 67.3%
  • 2023 Miami: Tyler Van Dyke 65.8%
  • 2024 Miami: Cam Ward 67.2%
  • 2025 Miami: Carson Beck 74.5%
TVD is the least accurate QB Dawson has ever started for a full season and he is more accurate than Leavitt, let that sink in for a moment. Now add in the injury, HARD PASS!!
Ok real reason comes out here lol.

Its not about the injury, its the fact you think hes a bad fit.

No, the injury is number #1. I fear losing an early game because the starting QB doesn’t practice with the team until fall camp. With teams already having a limited number of practices that time is valuable. In the first half of the season Beck routinely under threw or over threw guys, you could just see he wasn’t in sink with them. I would prefer someone who can come in and hit the ground running from day one with the team.

Arizona State QB Sam Leavitt
The three schools that continue to be tied to Sam Leavitt the most are Indiana, Oregon and LSU. Miami was also initially mentioned, but it’s unclear at this point where he is on the board for the Hurricanes.
Our involvement in the QB portal so far has been much less than I would've expected. Almost makes me think we have our guy already and told him to stay in school until the portal opens.

For me, everything is relative. Yea, QB being out is a negative.

But what if:
Bailey: stays at NC ST
Sorsby: Texas Tech
Hoover: Indiana
Raiola: Oregon
Rocco Becht: Penn state

Then what?

TBH, we’ve heard minimal buzz on any portal. They’re clearly moving in silence, that first day is gonna be fun

I hope Mario rethinks the strategy of putting such a premium on big game exp. It’s nice, but it doesn’t mean that much. Beck is a weak link on this team and, IMO, almost threw us out of a CFP spot.
We’ve got a playoff caliber roster, just go get a playmaker at QB. Plenty of teams are making the CFP with limited experience at quarterback.

Beck and Mario recently admitted that Beck is finally 100% percent physically, mentally and with the playbook and that not participating in spring practice was a factor. Should we take a chance on more damaged goods? Big risk versus the possible reward.

I will say, that it sucks he's injured and will miss spring. However, the difference between Beck & Sam, is that, Beck was going to face ND in week 1. We still don't know if who we'll face week 1, but it won't be a team as good as ND. So even if he needs to use the first 3 games to get in rhythm with the wideouts, that's fine.

Also, Sam can affect the game with his legs where Beck can't.

I'm a huge fan of Leavitt and I say no. Can't do it.

However, the schedule does lay out a little different next year with ND in November. You may open the season with a conference game but it should be a winnable one.

Does anyone know if he would be able to throw the ball to the receivers while recovering from the foot injury? Not sure it's a 1to1 with Beck, who hurt his throwing elbow. Also we are still playing playoff football despite Beck missing spring practice. Pretty, pretty, pretty good outcome. My thinking on Leavitt has evolved.
