We get screwed by officials from other conferences. Big 12 official Terry Porter screwed us big time in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl. A game we had won before he threw a flag an hour after the play, well it seemed like an hour. In 1988 we got screwed at ND when the official thought we had to score on 4th down but we made enough for the first down.
Key Controversies of the 1988 ND Game
Both cost, oneNC the other the chance at the NC that ND won.
The article comment is wrong, even JJ said often that Gary had the first down:
As Gary fell, the ball popped loose and Notre Dame linebacker Mike Stonebreaker recovered, ending the Miami drive. Miami argued, however, that the play was over before the ball popped loose and that the Hurricanes should have had a first down.
Key Controversies of the 1988 ND Game
- The Cleveland Gary Fumble: With approximately seven minutes left in the fourth quarter and Notre Dame leading 31-24, Miami had the ball at the Notre Dame 11-yard line. Miami's Cleveland Gary caught a pass and was hit at the one-yard line, where he lost control of the ball. Officials ruled it a fumble, and Notre Dame recovered. Miami supporters still argue that Gary had crossed the goal line for a touchdown or that his knee was down before the ball came loose.
- An Uncalled Penalty: In the popular ESPN 30 for 30 documentary, "Catholics vs. Convicts," it was pointed out that an earlier touchdown catch by Notre Dame's Andre Brown that made the score 31-30 was arguably not a catch because Brown never had control of the ball, a fact Miami players and coaches agreed (Andre Brown was a Cane they mean Derek Brown)
