The absurdity of CIS HC criteria

OP is right. The number of "sure thing" candidates is always miniscule and frankly, Miami is not the type of historical, blue-blood university with a huge alumni base to get one of those few "sure thing" candidates. ****, even some of those blue bloods are having trouble finding that coach (Texas & Michigan).

Most make an educated guess and are rewarded. For every group of 5 sure thing like Florida signing Urban Meyer, there is a Jim McElwain, Justin Fuente, or Dino Babers. ****, even a NC winning coach isn't a sure thing - anyone want to hire Gene Chizik or Coach O?

That's why this AD hire is so important. You need to have the right person who can find the coach that has "it". Personally, I would look for a guy who has specialized on either the offensive or defensive side of the ball, has done more with less, instills discipline, and knows how to run an organization (build a solid coaching staff). Stoops, Kiffin, and Freeze would fit this description I believe. All 3 coached in the best conference and have had competitive teams there in places that have not had great histories. I know Kiffin and Freeze have had their off-field issues, but they both seem to have grown and matured since then.

Mario does worry me a bit since he doesn't have that coordinator history and some of his game day decisions, but he has been successful at Oregon, I have to give him that.

Different. The admin has been exposed nationally on main stream television. Has to be a great hire
Just like the last few times. Every time people fly banners and pat themselves on the back about how embarrassed the administration must be and say "now they'll get it right because we publicly shamed them" and "the program can't afford another busted coach".

I've heard it all before, nothing is different.

I was going to say something to the effect it also matters what state that program was in prior to Jimmy/ Erickson and not just the records. Then I remembered Golden took over an awful Temple team and turned that around. But then I remembered Matt Rhule also took over an awful temple team… and turned them around. Soooo crapshoot?

The voluminous and repetiitive threads on coaching criteria and candidates bear little resemblance to the coaching legends that so may pine for.
This is Jimmy Johnson's record before he was hired at Miam:

Butch Davis was never a HC at the college level prior to Miami. Explain to me why they were good candidates then but unacceptable now. Isn't it really the luck of the draw?

This is certainly a fine post. Underserving of all the negative commentary, but it's moronic so ignore them.

Your essential point is that it's possible to find outstanding HC candidates who aren't winning conference championships and lack great W-L records records because they are currently coaching at programs that have inherent shortcomings in tradition/location/financial commitment/etc/etc. This is a true observation and remains so today no different than back when Jimmy and Dennis were hired.

Allow me to sum up...

Sam Jankovich vs. any other AD we have had since.

No mas.

We have an opportunity to offer Jurich, who is just as competent as Sam J. But don't hold your breath...
.... we are talking about a bunch of idiots who hired Radio over Patterson, the day after paying an outside firm $50K to do a national search for HC...
..Hiring stupidity runs through the taps at Hecht...
