The voluminous and repetiitive threads on coaching criteria and candidates bear little resemblance to the coaching legends that so may pine for.
This is Jimmy Johnson's record before he was hired at Miam:

Butch Davis was never a HC at the college level prior to Miami. Explain to me why they were good candidates then but unacceptable now. Isn't it really the luck of the draw?

Somebody else has probably already explained, but I’ll give it a try anyway. Back then, Miami had a huge talent advantage. All those 5* kids we lose to bama used to go to Miami. Also, other college schemes were crazy antiquated. Turns out running an option offense when the other team’s DL is faster than your RB is tough. So. An embarrassment of talent covers up a lot of weaknesses.

Maybe it’s good to nitpick. That way the school and fanbase won’t be too crestfallen when choice #1 says no.

Allow me to sum up...

Sam Jankovich vs. any other AD we have had since.

No mas.

So your theory is we should only target coaches with mediocre W/L records because it worked when we hired Johnson and Erickson. Interesting.

Johnson went 8 - 4 in the Big 8 conference his last season with OSU. At the time that was considered a remarkable achievement. The conference was completely dominated by OU and Nebraska. Erickson was highly regarded for his creative offenses at Washington State despite his W/L record.

Much different era of the sport—and Miami gamed the system back then.

Howard built it and both Jimmy and Dennis were able to maintain it—before it broke and it took an elite recruiter in Butch to rebuild it.

Canes are almost 20 years removed from any real success and in 2021 it will take a full-blown rebuild and real coach to get this right.

Georgia hired one of Saban's best in Kirby Smart—paying him and his staff around $14M annually. They dumped $200M into the program over the past few years. They spend more than any other program on recruiting. They revamped their stadium and have recruiting lounges, suites, etc.—and an alum base that POURS money into the program.

The days of nickel and diming or looking for diamonds in the rough is LONG gone. Gotta go big and pay big to win big. Period.

It's clear you copied and pasted it. It's also clear that you are still living in the past.
And it is equally clear you are living in your mother's basement. but because of congenital, neurologiical defects you are unable to see I was interested in a discussion of the difference in search criteria between then an now.
