The 2023 QB Class

Read my mind. I was actually thinking about doing a breakdown of 2023 five stars. Checking in on guys like Jurrion ****ey and guys like Samson, compared to Mauigoa etc

Goes to show you that getting that blue chip 5 star QB isn’t the recipe anymore, these guys are mental rollercoasters and expect the bag with no proven production. I’d rather get the guys we sign like nickel and Coleman who are low risk. If they don’t pan out, use our resources in the portal to get proven P4 guys.

Waiting for the counterpoint to this.

Starting to look like your proposed philosophical approach to QB recruiting, both HS and transfer portal, seems to be making more sense.

A few more years worth of data and we should have a better idea with more historical data available.

But in the absence of this data, I think the points you have been making in previous posts make sense especially now looking at 2023. Let’s see how 2024 and beyond pan out.

Definitely not living up to the hype!!!

The highest 4-star that year was Jaden Rashada.

I listened to your podcast yesterday. Did you learn anything more about if Rashada is going to be at the Spring Game today? And do you really believes it's just because he and Beck are friends? I mean, Beck isn't even throwing today.

Translation: don't throw millions at HS QB, save it for other roles and a top portal QB if you need one.
What we’ve been doing the last 12-18 months at the spot is the right move I think

Guys like Nickel and Coleman are locked in early and no bag games. Lots of upside without breaking the bank. Portal for the big money if necessary

I am firmly in this camp. HOWEVER, I think you must go out and get guys as good as Nickel and Coleman every single year. Dawson's evals have been spot on. High 3 stars that develop into mid 4 stars with upside. IMO, both these guys should have been Top 10 arguably Top 5 QBs.

TBH, I was/am not a fan of Judd. I can't remember if Gattis or Dawson first recruited him, but he committed a couple months after Dawson stepped ito the OC role, and by that time many of the better options were already being locked up or at least had their finalists identified, so I can't really fault Dawson either way. But we can't have kids like Judd and Emory as our HS QB adds any longer.

Tennessee is an interesting case study.

They had a Portal QB in 2022. He got drafted. They had a new Portal QB in 2023. He got drafted.

They also won a bidding war for Nico out of high school. Their reward was the 93rd-ranked passing offense and a public humiliation in April.

All I know is after todays spring game we need to watch the Portal for QBs to backup Beck
