The #1 pick last year and projected #1 pick this year

With 105 scholarships, I’m surprised teams aren’t taking a blue chipper at QB then a completely unknown who has tools as well. Taking two a year just to increase your chances of hitting. If the lower ranked guy isn’t worth anything you just cut him lose after a year or so.

That offense for cam is enough for any coach to not think its a good qb there lol

Fernando tho you can see the things that would translate, strong arm and throws with alot of anticipation

But both Cam and Fernando started and got valuable reps in live game situations.

Why when the portal allows a good team to sign a kid who has started for years. In today’s game, Miami is better off landing kids that may develop AND portal kids as needed. When the good QBs stop hitting the portal, Miami will need to develop.

Not all teams can afford to do the portal shopping every season like Miami can

The problem is, there’s only so many reps you can give your quarterbacks. Ward and Mendoza went to schools and played right away. Mendoza started as a freshman at Cal and Cam did the same at Incarnate Word. Neither was anywhere near a finished product but it’s not like their schools were loaded with talent and making championship runs. They could afford to let their young quarterbacks take their lumps. Those guys likely would never have became the stars they did if they were just stashed on a bench somewhere hoping to get practice squad reps.

QB evals the most difficult, not even Coleman is a guarantee with all that arm strength. Because if you cant throw in structure or anticipate you are cooked. If you have to see a guy open then throw it you are already 2 to 3 seconds late, you wont have success. And that cant be taught, you either have it with live bullets or you just a practice camp type QB. You can get better but give me the guy that has it already, portal QB all day. I dont even think any QB we recruited out of HS will ever be the opening season starter unless injuries happen. But to openly win the job outright I dont see that in the room. (and thats ok imo)

Wow was not aware Mendoza was able to successfully pull this off on Cal. You’d figure they’d be more attuned to these type of shenanigans but I guess it paid off for them…

I think Miami is ahead of the market with its QB strategy. With the bust rate of HS qbs plus the cost of a five star an then letting develop equals a huge sunk cost sitting on the bench maybe never to pay off. Lt someone else do the developmental work and grab a known commodity

Cal offered after signing day. Mendoza signed with Yale but was able to get out of it because they don’t offer football scholarships.

FIFY. They offered right before traditional signing day and he signed with them on 2/2/22 which was National signing day that year. Also, FIU which is an FBS school offered right before the start of his senior season, he just wisely chose Yale then Cal over them.

In any event, your point still stands but I just immediately thought of that wild *** video and Mendoza pulling that off 😂
