I'm confident we figure it out, but we have not really played any quality QBs other than Warren and Lopez. CMU was a running qb, Clemson was a freshman whose first instinct was to run, Daniels is streaky and Pitt it was a guy only getting his second start in 5 years.

Yes, we are tops in run defense but what happens when a team just comes in and say forget the run and start throwing it all over the yard from their first snap. I know Wake wished they would have started the game like they called plays in the second half.........

Just keeping working on it, and hopefully health improves things into Nov.

Thata when the sacks n holding piles up

We need to understand that when you take out the best technical corner in college football, it’s going to expose everybody else’s flaws. Omar won’t be back there guarding receivers; he’ll be playing the flat and blitzing. Fitzgerald would be playing safety, reading the field from the back end and focusing on one side.

With OJ erasing the outside receiver, it makes everybody else’s job easier because we have an extra man who can roam around, blitz, or provide help on the other side. The problem is that once you take OJ out of the lineup, everybody’s weaknesses will become more noticeable because they won’t get the same consistent help and coverage support they would get with OJ on the field.

Huge drop off this year from Keionte Scott to Omar Thornton this year. I hope we can overcome injuries and some poor play in secondary this year but our Offense has been much better than last year..there are no unbeatable teams out there this year. It seems anyone can lose on any given week.

We miss Fitzgerald as ballhawk at safety this year due to him having to play CB with all the injuries.
When we finally get healthy again bryce will replace Thorton.

Already did, I don’t member seeing Thornton until the 4th quarter.

People complained when Rumph coached here that corners never turned and looked for the ball.
Not gonna get into the rest. But our DEVELOPMENT and performance out of the position was by far the best with Mike. Not to mention we didn't have even close to what we get out of the line.

are we ready to have the conversation about the lazy technique we've seen? i know the d-line doesn't have to first rounders, but alot of the issues i've seen is just terrible footwork, no urgency, free releases, not using the sideline as a defender ... @Memnon, would love to hear your take

based on the sample size i can understand the hesitancy to hire, however his recruiting has been a1
Good lord. The fire said coach team is out and ready to burn down a position room…

speaking as the op ... i never suggested firing him ... what we need is quality coaching through technique and understanding ... especially as the talent level rises

Soft zone with lack of consistent pressure is exposing the secondary even more so. We need more from the dline and our secondary .
More pressure
By DLine helps cover for secondary

We need Moten and Scott to
Do more than plug run
They need to be game wreckers
I’d also like to see some A gap blitzes. We seem to only bring them off the edge this year.

Our pass defense will drastically improve the first time a cb turns and looks for the ball this year. We're at the point where my dog leaves the room when the defense takes the field because she can't emotionally take me yelling PASS every time hoping it helps a DB decide to find the ball.

Lightfoot played the pass better against Pitt than any DB.

The only person I want to hear from is @Memnon … we have obviously banged up and pressure was not great against Pitt, But so you think we need a change their? And how could that affect the elite recruits coming in at the position?

You can’t realistically expect a CB to come back from injury after 5 games and play at a high level. It takes a few games, and that’s why Lucas looked so much better yesterday than against FSU, and the Pitt QB only threw one pass in his direction and that pass was knocked down incomplete.

EOC was also solid. I was satisfied with the starting DBs, but the DB bench was horrendous. In addition to Ryan Mack, I would like to see us give #15 Brody Jennings more looks as a backup CB . He seems to have the necessary CB skills and had an interception previously against CMU. Jennings also tackled well. IMHO, Jennings would not have given up that wide open busted coverage for an easy TD to Pitt’s WR Cam Sapp at the end of the game .

If OJ and Antoine don’t come back in the next 4-5 games, they should consider shutting it down and get ready for next season because they will not be capable of helping much this postseason without some meaningful reps before the end of the regular season. Frankly, OJ hasn’t been consistently healthy and productive since his freshman year. Like any other CB coming off of injury, they need to get healthy and gets some reps in before you throw them out there to the wolves
