Updated 10/17/18 through 7 games (LSU, SSU, @Toledo, FIU, UNC, FSU, UVA) (5-2) 1-2 away from home (LSU, UVA), 4-0 at home (FIU, UNC, FSU, SSU)

Takeaways
*As the season wears on we're seeing the offense creep back down to mediocrity. That could be due to the QB switch and being really conservative. Only 12 throws against UNC and you could tell the first three quarters Perry was struggling mightily. But it's still something to look on as we need a better offense if we're going to be elite. Hopefully Perry settles down early and performs well all 4 quarters
^wrote this before the UVA game...still holds true, now goes for Rosier as well going forward.
*Defense is best it's been since championship teams imo
^still holds true, officially #1 defense
*Offensive line is proving to be a problem. If it's talent then we need to find it quick, if coaching then Searles has to go
^still true, proving to be biggest problem imo. Sickening watching mahoney get pushed back 5 yards several plays into the running backs

*Biggest takeaway is that our team is the new michigan of college football. idc who the qb is honestly, we need improved playcalling, improved OL, and improved qb execution. it's not just one of those, it's all three and if they don't change we're gonna be 9-3/10-2 forever wasting away an elite Defense until someone snags manny away

*QB debate is biggest one on board as it should be along with playcalling, but I'll argue to the death of me that we won't be succesful until Searles is gone or gets rid of these scrubs up front. They are just miserable and rewatching the UVA game was depressing seeing them get owned every snap by an inferior DL @ UVA

*to win the ACC we need a game manager @ qb, that's it. Having a Tua type player would win the natty with this defense, but literally just need one of these two dudes to step up, not turn it over, and hit open reads for the love of god.

*take these however you want, it's just for those who like to see any outliers, not skewed in any way, these are the ones I find useful/telling of any weaknesses.
*I've included games vs ALL opponents, meaning all teams performances including FCS schools AND performances for all schools ONLY against FBS competition.
*We could drill it down to against power 5 however the sample size is smaller and many power 5 teams are worse than group of 5 (toledo > rutgers for example)
*anything you guys want added let me know

Defense

Opponent QB rating:
vs ALL --> #4 nationally (94.72 opponent QB rating) we're allowing 52% completion, 6 tds passing, we have 11 ints, and 130.9 yards per game
vs FBS -->#5 nationally (97.99 rating). We've allowed 52% completion, 6 tds, 9 interceptions, and 144 yards per game
**one of the instances where keeping FCS schools in the rankings hurts us as we beat up on Savannah state statistically a lot less than some other major programs did (outside of scoring)

Defensive Yards Per Play:
vs ALL --> #1 nationally @ 3.80 yards per play
vs FBS --> #3 nationally @ 4.17 yards per play

Sacks:
vs ALL --> #5 nationally at 3.43 per game (last year we finished #1 at 3.39 per game, so we've gotten better despite ranking down)
vs FBS --> #8 at 3.5 per game, weirdly enough savannah state game is hurting our average here

Tackles for Loss:
vs ALL --> #1 nationally at 11.57 per game (81 total). 8 against LSU, 14 Savannah State, 13 against Toledo, 11 against FIU, 14 UNC, 12 FSU, 9 UVA
vs FBS --> #1 nationally at 11.17 TFL per game (67 total)
**we're 20 ahead of any other team. ECU is 20 behind but only 6 games. we'll still be ahead by 11 if they hit their average this weekend

Total Defense:
vs ALL --> #1 nationally @ 236 yards per game
vs FBS --> #2 nationally @ 262 yards per game, Michigan has us by 24 ypg here, we cut the deficit by 15 yds per game after UVA

Opponent 3rd down %:
vs ALL --> #1 nationally at 20.83% (20 of 96 attempts)
vs FBS --> #2 nationally at 22.50%. (18 of 80 attempts)
*remains truly best stat each week. Kept us in the UVA game despite horrid offense

Turnover Margin:
vs ALL --> #17 nationally (+5)
vs FBS --> #30 (+3)
unfortunately we saw a ton of the chain against UVA, just didn't turn it into points

Scoring Defense:
vs ALL --> #21 nationally at 18.1 ppg.
vs FBS --> #28 nationally at 21.2 ppg
slightly moved up in rankings after allowing only 16 to UVA

Rushing Defense:
vs ALL --> #9 nationally @ 2.83 ypc and #11 nationally @ 105.57 ypg
vs FBS --> #17 nationally @ 3.30 ypc and #19 nationally @ 118.17 ypg

Passing Defense:
vs ALL --> #2 nationally @130.9 ypg, #4 in yards per attempt @ 5.1
vs FBS --> #4 nationally @144 ypg, #4 in yards per attempt @ 5.3

Offense

Scoring Offense:
vs ALL: #25 nationally at 37.4 ppg
vs FBS: #43 nationally at 30.8 ppg

Rushing offense:
vs ALL --> #46 nationally at 4.67 ypc
vs FBS --> #54 nationally at 4.40 ypc

Passing Offense: will use Rating metric here as it is most indicative of performance
vs FBS--> #58 @138 (down 9 rating points from last week) (Alabama duo at 233)

Sacks Allowed
vs ALL --> #76 nationally, 2.29 sacks per game
vs FBS --> #80 nationally, 2.5 sacks per game

Tackles for Loss Allowed
vs ALL --> #58 nationally, 5.71 TFL allowed per game, moved up after allowing 3 against UVA
vs FBS --> #59 nationally, 5.83 TFL allowed per game

Third Down %
vs ALL --> #38 nationally @ 43.01%, 40 for 93
vs FBS --> #51 nationally @ 40.74%, 33 for 81
**127th last year so still big jump but this number is evening out and dropping, i expect to finish middle of the pack here
^Still holds true, still creeping toward average, improvement none the less but need to be higher

Long Scrimmage Plays (over 30 yards)
vs ALL --> #8 nationally, 23 plays over 30 yards
vs FBS --> #10 nationally, 18 plays over 30 yards

Offensive Yards Per Play
vs ALL --> #57 nationally, 5.91 yards per play
vs FBS --> #57 nationally, 5.68 yards per play

Total Offensive Yardage
vs ALL --> #77 nationally @ 399 yards per game
vs FBS --> #80 nationally @ 383 yards per game

Updated 09/17/18 through 3 games (LSU, SSU, @Toledo)

Although it's early and most teams are playing cupcakes, I figured it would be interesting to see where we stack up. Our schedule isn't getting any harder anytime soon so I assume we will see some of the statistics go up in our favor based upon our level of competition remaining low.

Before anyone says "Savannah State doesn't count" I included #'s with and without FCS opponents. SSU is miserable for sure, but a lot of teams #'s were skewed much more than ours were after FCS opponents were taken out. I also believe we played very well defensively against LSU now that we can compare their performance against us and against Auburn.

Other takeaways:
*Offense needs to play better, LSU may have one of the best defenses in the nation and the sample size is small but I hope we see a major lift in offensive productivity.
*Third down conversions (both offense and defense) have gotten dramatically better
*Turnovers need to become more prevalent for us to have a successful season
*Have full confidence in our defense ranking top 5 in TFL and Sacks throughout the year, which is promising.
*QB play is as subpar as we all already know

Defense

Opponent QB rating:
vs ALL --> #43 nationally (110 opponent qb rating) for reference Utah #1 at 73
vs FBS -->#63 nationally (125 rating)

Defensive Yards Per Play:
vs ALL --> #5 nationally @ 3.89 yards per play
vs FBS --> #42 nationally @ 5.08 yards per play
(if you account for teams play ranked opponents, we allowed 4.5 yards per play against LSU that ranks #4 out of 52 teams that have played rank teams)

Sacks:
vs ALL --> #21 nationally at 3 per game (9 total). (last year we finished #1 at 3.39 per game (3.58 vs FBS)
vs FBS --> #22 at 3 per game (no change)
--> I expect this number to increase with FIU, UNC, and then the dreadful FSU O-Line coming up next

Tackles for Loss:
vs ALL --> #1 nationally at 11.67 per game (35 total). 8 against LSU, 14 Savannah State, 13 against Toledo
vs FBS --> #9 at 10.5 TFL per game (21 total), for reference this rate over the course of a season would earn #1 overall on average

Total Defense:
vs ALL --> #4 nationally @ 236 yards per game,
vs FBS --> #23 nationally @ 315 yards per game if you take away FCS opponents.
--> this needs to improve but for reference at 315 yards per game against FBS opponents last year would have ranked 11th.

Opponent 3rd down %:
vs ALL --> #1 nationally at 16.28% (7 of 43 attempts)
vs FBS --> #3 nationally at 18.52%.

Turnover Margin:
vs ALL --> #46 nationally, +1
vs FBS --> #78 (-1)

Scoring Defense:
vs ALL --> #35 nationally at 19 ppg.
vs FBS --> #73 nationally at 28.5ppg
--> will be severely disappointed in Diaz/team if any of these teams score more than 20 points (FSU, UVA, UNC, FIU, DUKE, GT, or PITT), if we keep these under 20 would expect us to finish top 10 in this metric

Offense

Scoring Offense: (just going to leave out FCS as Savannah State riot holds no relevance)
#37 nationally at 33ppg

Rushing offense: Going to use YPC as a more reasonable metric here as the metric itself doesn't hold much weight
vs ALL --> #57 nationally at 4.76 ypc
vs FBS --> #66 nationally at 4.03 ypc

Passing Offense: will use Rating metric here as it is most indicative of performance
to find out a true number, I drilled two specific categories leaving out Savannah state
1st --> non power 5 FBS opponent, Rosier is #34 nationally out of 103 teams playing non power 5 FBS opponents
2nd category --> ranked AP opponent, Rosier is #34 out of 52 teams playing AP ranked teams

Sacks Allowed
vs ALL --> #61 nationally, 1.67 sacks per game
vs FBS --> #53 nationally, 2 sacks per game
--> although Savannah state helped our #, it seems a lot of schools stats were skewed by FCS which is why we got better when leaving out SSU

Tackles for Loss Allowed
vs ALL --> #39 nationally, 4.67 yards per game 14 total
vs FBS --> #24 nationally, 4.50 yards per game, 9 total

Third Down %
vs ALL --> #34 nationally @ 46.51%, 20/43
vs FBS --> #49 nationally @ 41.94%, 13/31
--> any true cane fan knows this is a massive upgrade over last few years. We finish last year ranked #127 out of 130 teams

Long Scrimmage Plays (over 30 yards)
vs ALL --> #3 nationally, 14 plays over 30 yards
vs FBS --> #8 nationally, 8 plays over 30 yards

Offensive Yards Per Play
vs ALL --> #56 nationally, 6.15 yards per play
vs FBS --> #67 nationally, 5.62 yards per play

Total Offensive Yardage
vs ALL --> #59 nationally @ 436.3 yards per game
vs FBS --> #62 nationally @ 407.5 yards per game

Thanks for this. That’s good homework right there. Honestly outside of the final score, the LSU game was much closer than anyone outside would like to admit.

Been saying this since about Tuesday after that game when I got home from Dallas and watched it twice more on the TV broadcast.

Give Miami just an average Power 5 QB and punter...nothing special, just the average Power 5 kid at both spots, and Miami is in that game in the 4th quarter.

To be completely honest our schedule doesn't get much harder than LSU and Toledo.. FSU is a rivalry game is the only reason it could be close. We should beat them by 4 scores, especially at home. Boston College will be tough on the road on a Friday, and VT will be tough on the road, most likely in a night game at the end of November where it'll be cold. Duke will only be competitive if Jones is healthy and back to himself. FIU will be a walk in the park, UNC is awful, UVA is bad, Pitt isn't very good, and GT isn't very good.

Those stats *should* look pretty good at the end of the year.

And that was our own doing. LSU won that game legit. We really need to stop making excuses for that game, we lost. And it wasn't that close considering we were down 33-3 at one point.

Exactly. We were beaten soundly at the LOS, on both sides.

Only one problem. If you hold out the SSU blowout, are you also going to take every cupcake off of everyone else's schedule? I mean, what would FSU's stats be if you take away that Samford game... oh... wait....

We basically have two DL's. The traditional one that you know, plays on Defense. The other is our OL. They can't get a push for nothing, but all things considered, their pretty good at keeping the QB's jersey clean and defending him, and maybe that's the problem. Looks like they're being coached not to attack.

Our OL isn't as terrible as some make it out to be, but they're nowhere near playoff status.

Need more TO's, plain and simple. We won 10 games in a row last year because we were averaging nearly 3 TO's a game.

We are 4 players away from being a top 10 team: Knowles, Rosier, Jones, M Smith. You can add the young kids in Feagles and Baxa but I think both have the legs just aren't consistent enough, yet.

I'd like to see Steed at WLB vs Smith and Carter over Knowles. Give me Scaife at RT and Donaldson at guard OR Boulware at Guard. Don't think Rosier will be benched until Richt is hit with a ball by Rosier.

Only one problem. If you hold out the SSU blowout, are you also going to take every cupcake off of everyone else's schedule? I mean, what would FSU's stats be if you take away that Samford game... oh... wait....
Yes the second ranking is when everyone's FCS opponents are taken out

I see your point though where that may help FSU because they are that bad
