No not semantics since Keionte Scott never played Cornerback for us. He tried playing Cornerback for Auburn in 2024 with less than stellar results. He played Nickel for us last year but that is not the same as being a Nickel CB back in the day when defenses used the #3 CB to play the slot WR when the defense went to Nickel coverage. The Nickel position has evolved into something completely different especially in Corey Hetherman's defense. In Hetherman's defense the Nickel is an Apex defender much of the time. This version of the Nickel position needs to have the qualities of a LB, a safety and some cornerback skills. Whoever plays the position needs to be a plus run defender and a natural blitzer with a high football IQ. So no, this isn't semantics. Keionte Scott didn't play the Cornerback position for us. He played Nickel in Hetherman's scheme which is a totally different position. A position that Scott is perfectly suited for.
He has zero chance of being the backup this year. He is 4th on the chart.

No Nickel is not a CB even if someone who had previously played CB is moved to Nickel. What you are referring to isn't the case anymore. Your analogy is completely flawed as it isn't the same thing at all. The Nickel position in Hetherman's defense is a completely different position from CB. What you are trying to get across with your analogy hasn't been the case in many years as I alluded to in my previous post. The Nickel position is usually played by a DB(Defensive Back) who could also have been a Safety and not necessarily a CB. There are certain LBs who could play the Nickel role here if they have the combination of skills required. Also, what you see him labeled as in the NFL draft is irrelevant to the discussion at hand. Scott had spent most of his high school and college career as a CB but it wasnt until he came to Miami under Hetherman and Etheridge that his true niche in the game was found. Nickel in Hetherman's defense at least is an entirely different position with entirely different responsibilities so no it isn't semantics. Since you don't seem to be able to understand the difference then there isn't much I can do as I have endeavored to be as painstakingly articulate as possible.
