Rule: The NCAA targeting rule penalizes forceful, forceful, or unnecessary contact to the head or neck of an opponent. Key factors include making forcible contact with the head, leading with the crown of the helmet, launching the body, or attacking a defenseless player. The foul results in a 15-yard penalty and an automatic ejection, with ejections in the second half also incurring a suspension for the first half of the next game
I don't see this as targeting:

The initial contact grazed his helmet.
In your shot, you can see his "strike zone" is the shoulder/chest.
I don't know how a player can redirect, running at 18 mph, when the ball carrier lowers his head into that strike zone the last second.
This is the entire problem with the ejection part of the rule. The game is not played in super slo-mo like the reviews.
It should be a tiered system ejection, like flagrant fouls in basketball. Had Day jumped in the air WWE flying headbutt style, OK, ejection makes sense. You're reviewing the play anyways should be able to determine intent.

Secondarily, they never call this penalty on ball carriers dropping their helmets and leading with the crown on offense.

I just simply hate the rule.

Did they try to say he was a defenseless player?
This was what they seemed to be indicating on the broadcast but I don’t see how you’re defenseless once you’ve fielded the punt. The hit wasn’t with the crown so I’m assuming they said defenseless.

I think there are hits that warrant an ejection, but you know them when you see them. It’s like a flagrant 1 vs flagrant 2 in hoops
thats what im saying an it sucked in ejections especially when these kids werent making money. Some of these kids had their college careers end in ejections. 2 targeting in a game and ejection or if u just want to be strict after 2 targeting to a player he loses a half or something and go on from there. or if its an egregious one like a flagrant 2 ejection in basketball.

dylan day a guy who only plays specials is now essentially gone for a game. Yet the pr could of ran witht he ball lowered his crown on dylan day ran him over and would receive absolutely nothing...more than likely praise fromt he announcers. That needs to be fixed for years.

Have said this for what seems like 10 years now. Soccer sucks, but something that mimics their card system makes sense. Level 1 vs Level 2 flagrant type stuff. Not all targeting is created equal, although since they can't even figure out what's targeting and what isn't, it would be hilarious for them judging a "level 1" vs "level 2".

Either way, it's totally broken and has been forever.

Thought that is what they said, but makes no sense. Isn’t the purpose of fair catch to protect a would-be defenseless player? If you don’t call for fair catch, then good luck. Don’t think Day impeded his catching the ball. Timed it up perfectly.

Also, when the ball carrier could have and should have called a fair catch. The rules are to protect the players, so how about some accountability for the kid that chose not to protect himself via fair catch. **** him.
