I don't feel the need to offer my expert, never recruited and never coached college ball advice anymore. Mario doing things exactly how I said it should be done
He's following what he learned from Butch....not Saban to be Honest. He'd be the 1st to tell you that himself. He saw what Butch did from 98-2000 up close and personal. From evaluating, recruiting and development. Those 3yrs the talent Butch put together sh*ts on anything Saban put together in a 3yr span.

Talent wise - maybe.

But Saban has 7 rings as a HC, Butch has none.
Nowhere did I say anything about rings....Talent wise maybe??...Are you insane??...Go look at the talent Butch had when Mario was at UM as a GA from 98-2000...and what that talent did in the NFL....and show me Sabans talent during ANY 3yr span during his tenure at Bama that even remotely comes close.....You can't....

Right, but you implied Mario was following what he learned about team building from Butch more than so Saban, when that is antithetical to everything Mario has said and also just doesn’t make much sense considering Butch amassed his talent over 20 years ago and recruiting has changed tremendously since.

It certainly remains to be seen what happens in the League long term, but these are some of the players on the 2018 Bama team:

Mac Jones
Jalen Hurts
Tua Tagovailoa

Damien Harris
Josh Jacobs
Najee Harris

Jerry Jeudy
Jaylen Waddle
Henry Ruggs
DeVonta Smith
Irv Smith Jr.

Patrick Surtain Jr.
Trevon Diggs
Xavier McKinney
Quinnen Williams
Raekwon Davis

That’s an insane collection of talent.

1st off....Bama cheated getting that talent....Butch didn't. Take 31 schollies from Saban...and that talent isn't there. What Butch did in ref to recruiting, under those adverse conditions, wipes its *** with anything Saban ever did...It was Saban who called Butch in the 90s while HC at Michigan St, and asked if he could come down and watch practices, and get pointers from Butch....Not the other way around...those players you showed from 2018 at Bama has NOTHING on the talent on the 2000 team.....

Santana
Wayne
Morgan
Shockey
Morgan
James Jackson
DJ Williams
Wilfork
Portis
Andre Johnson
Vernon Carey
William Joseph
Davenport
Reed
Buchanon
James Lewis
Joaquin
McKinnie
Romberg
Campbell
Clark
Rumph
Fitzgerald
Al Blades
Damione Lewis
Matt Walters
William Joseph
Jamaal Green....Destroys anything Saban had....Not even in the same spectrum...

Was watching that 18 bama team to get idea of Gattis O and that offensive talent was just shake your head worthy, closest to '00s canes you can imagine.. Cant hate on that both very impressive..

2018 Bama had nothing (talent wise) than 2000 UM.....That 2000 team will have 4 guys in Canton before long (one already there)....I'd be willing to bet 2018 Bama won't have one, when all is said and done....

Cool Beans, and agreed.. But still doesnt change fact I can flip youtube and watch a college team have all their offensive talent in NFL.. Its impressive and recruits notice..

Friend, you remind me of this older gentleman who I used to know when I lived in Brooklyn.

He was a huge baseball fan and every time I’d bring up a modern day star he’d proclaim that they couldn’t light a candle to the players from his day.

Barry Bonds? He had nothing on Ernie Banks!

Mike Trout? Mickey Mantle would eat him alive!

Jacob DeGrom? He couldn’t lace Tom Seaver’s cleats!

I always laughed it off but it kind of made me sad thinking about how some individuals can’t stop living in the past. Life evolves. Things get better. It’s human nature.

It’s not blasphemous to say Saban is a much better coach than Butch. It’s not blasphemous to say that the collection of talent assembled by Saban over the last 10 years can rival what Butch put together.

I don’t want to derail the thread any further - because the excellent article in the OP is what we should be focusing on - but the notion that Mario should or would be looking to Butch instead of Saban for a template on modern CFB team building is flat out laughable.

I was with Mario 2 weeks ago in his office...I know for a fact what I'm talking about. He talks to Butch more often than he talks to Saban...So please stop with the nonsense...I spent alot of time with Mario when he was a GA from 98-2000....I was at Greentree twice when Saban came down to see how practices were run....Lol at "Modern" not being 2000....as if I was talking about the 50s....

But in all seriousness Mickey Mantle was an absolute savage for his or any era

Saban might be a better game day coach than Butch...but in no way is he a better evaluator, recruiter or developer than Butch....Proof is in the pudding. Saban Bankrolled his teams...Butch didn't...Saban was and is LOVED by Bamas BOT....Butch wasn't....and LOL at the collection of talent Saban assembled in the last 10yrs rivals what talent Butch put together in only 6yrs...not even close....Ask the NFL and Canton....If Butch didn't have to deal with Sanctions, a BOT that loathed him, and had a Brinks truck at his disposal....it would have been even more Historic....Please stop with the nonsense. Butch was JJs closer from 84-88 at UM to boot..

They had 3 QB’s, 1 RB and 4 WR’s taken in the 1st round.
And???....Are you seriously going to compare 1st round picks between Butch and Saban??....Butch put 25 1st rounders into the NFL....4 of them going to Canton....3 of these RBs are Butchs....
Portis
McGahee
Edge....put Sabans Top 3 RBs and compare....it's not even fair....and please don't EVEN mention WRs....it's even more ridiculous....
