Butch left a team with so much talent Larry “Clappy” Coker came a horrible OT 4th-and-goal call away from consecutive undefeated national championships. And yes, I know Butch didn’t sign the incoming 2002 class but did lay the foundation.

98% of Butch's kids were at UM until the end of 2003.....What a coincidence that once Butch's recruits were gone...everything started going downhill....

He did, he took Cleveland to the playoffs for the 1st time in over 50yrs....he then whipped UMs *** at UNC 3 times...then he went to a Kindergarten College (FIU) and whipped UMs *** again.....(only an imbecile such as yourself) would think he got Lucky at UM....I guess he got Lucky Closing on 99% of all the Great Canes from 84-88 as well.....MFer must have 10,000 rabbit feet in his pocket....

Beating a chronically underachieving Miami isn’t an indicator of success, building a successful program is.

He never did it again, anywhere.

At the end of it all he’s a career .500 coach who left three of the four places he was in charge of worse off than when he got there.

No amount of embarrassing stat cherry-picking changes that.

People who said Butch didn't cheat are true homers. Just look at his track record. Miami and UNC will not touch him. Do I care how he got winners nope but the pencil pushers do.

Stop it.....Show me one instance Butch cheated at UM from 95-2000......At UNC he was totally exonerated by both UNC and the NCAA....Stop the stupidity....If you think the reason UM didn't hire him back after he left in 2001, was because of the UNC BS, you'd be sadly mistaken. @Brooklyndee ....just want you to know, while you were playing for Butch...he was cheating....Lol

Because fit..........like Diaz was a trash fit. Like Saban can't win at fiu. U need resources and structure in these times. UM was the **** back then and Butch evaluated n took advantage of that. There wasn't no sec dominance at that time either. Times change

Saban won at LSU before they were considered a powerhouse.
If Butch was as good as his fannyboys make him out to be he would win anywhere.

While I’m not getting into the debate here anyone who puts 1988 Notre dame on list is worthless when that Cane team in 88 was great and beat something like 6 or 7 conference champions as well as beat ND at ND only to get the game stolen over and over by the so called officials.
Additionally that FSU team was not even the best FSU team

Butch had a great eye for talent, at least while he was here. Nobody disputes that.

What he did with that talent is open for debate. He got the nickname Botch for a reason.

Cheating, I wouldn't say he was a cheater, but does that mean he was squeaky clean? A lot of teams have cheating and the head coach is often removed from the dirt on a direct level.

Where I see a disconnect with his name being cleared at UNC is that he hired one of the known dirtiest coaches around in John Blake. There is also little doubt that he was aware of the paper classes got then in academic trouble.

He got talent to UNC, but did so little with it.

He never landed another job at a big time program. Instead, he surfaced at FIU. He started off well enough, but then drove it off a cliff from there. Eye for talent gone or just lost the fire?

As for beating us. That was his last hurrah.

His wins against us, well we fired those guys so I don't know that it's a banner achievement.

The idea that one person wants to credit Butch for Saban is one of the most laughable things I've ever read anywhere.
 
Miami has the talent advantage. Bama would be lucky to replicate that success in the NFL.

But Saban is just a better coach. If Bowdens FSU teams gave that era fits, so would contemporary Bama.
