It is painfully clear that everyone who has said defensive coaching is the problem, was correct. Everyone that said defensive talent was the problem, was correct. And I will throw one more in there, depth is a huge problem.
Coach D - Not able to put his players in position to make plays. It is that simple. Cutcliff made a fool out of him today. Duke puts their running QB in and the LB's are still 7 yards behind the LOS. The pass rush was non existent and yet not one blitz on third downs. Even Duke found a way to blitz Morris in a few key situations since their DL was being manhandled. It is not rocket science. If there is no pass rush you have to invent some. How many times do we need to watch a RB dance around for a second and then go outside tackle and there be no one in sight? We cannot be that bad at understanding how to set and control the edges. So you have to ask yourself if this scheme is completely outdated for football today. The LB's look like they are on skates back there. They are not aggressive at all, read and react and get burned. Can someone please tell me what happened to the aggressive D we saw against Florida. Have we had a sack on first or second down all season? It is clear that the DL is told to run up field and not break contain. That is there main focus, not getting to the QB. Again read and react. OC's are just licking there chops to play against this scheme. Tell me how a Duke QB who had 7 INT's in two games does not even come close to throwing an INT? Simple, he was not put on his back all day.
Talent:
Defensive Line - An absolute no show. Even Chickillo has seemingly lost his only edge, hustle. We got no push all day long.
LB - Perryman is the only player that belongs on the field. Even he is outwitted sometimes. Yet he has to play the whole game because God forbid if he was not out there it would be a blood bath. Cornileus is just not UM talent. Armbrister is not as athletic as a UM LB should be although he does bring the wood on occasions. As a whole not one LB can play coverage.
CB - Played OK. But as the season has gone on they seem to be afraid of getting hurt and are tackling very bad.
S - Jenkins has regressed. His tackling technique is poor. Bush should have recovered by now. A real shame he is a shell of his former self. Highsmith and Rodgers, well I am not going there.
Depth - The DL in particular is completely out of gas. At the beginning of the season, while not world beaters, were bringing a good push on a majority of the snaps. Now a Duke OL is manhandling them. Pierre has become a JAG. 78 is showing us why he was a backup at VA.
There is one play that we have been gashed on for weeks now that both demonstrates bad coaching and lack of talent. The WR\RB screen play in which the Offensive player comes in motion and goes outside. He heads towards the wide side of the field toward a WR who has one on one matchup. For some reason Coach D refuses to send a defensive player in motion to follow him. It leads to a simple throw and all that needs to be done is the stationary WR performs a simple cut block. Boom, off goes the Offensive player being chased by a bad angle from a LB who for some reason did not follow him out there to begin with. Fellas this is a High School football play that we have watched over and over and over and over and we cannot defend it to save our lives. Why has Coach D not made an adjustment for this play? That is terrible coaching. The opposing OC is just laughing over there that this play keeps working week after week. And why do I say talent is an issue here? Because a football player has to be athletic and smart. If I am Perryman and Dorito told me not to cover that guy in the flat I would say ***** it. I am going after that guy because your scheme is not working. Coaching be damned I am going out and making that play. And after I make that play and we are in film study I would kindly ask the coach if he would like to rethink his approach because his did not work over and over and mine did on one try. It is absolutely inexcusable for Miami to continue to get gashed by the most basic of plays. And for that reason I blame everyone involved. What is scary is what if we actually played an exotic offense. Oregon would do bad things to us.
