We miss tackles a lot of time for a lot of reasons.
In this defense, we engage and hold creating running lanes/gaps. These are the gaps that players must hold, but never do. Because our defensive line is not going to close a gap or shoot one, but rather hold, it leaves it up to our backers and safeties to run into those alleys and make 1-on-1 tackles. Often times, our d-line can't hold the point and they start to 1. create a cut back lane, thus compromising our alley and giving up any hope of filling that alley or 2. creating a 'wash' of players by getting blown off or creased off their spot, ultimately disrupting our backers or safeties by running into them or allowing linemen to scrape off and block them. They also put players 1-on-1 on the perimeter with a lead blocker that MUST be beat to not create an outside alley. We lose this 1-on-1 probably 8/10 times.
Additionally, since we are not getting any push into the offensive back field, the running back has a nice head of steam where even if he is met by a linebacker or safety in an gap, he's going to gain 4-5 yards just on momentum alone. The key to stopping ANY running game is NEVER allow a back to gain a head of steam. You stop the run by destroying the LOS and setting it backwards. It's not about 1-on-1 tackling, it's about creating a swarming defensive front 7 and allowing others to clean up. Our staff is putting our kids in terrible positions and it costs us just like it did tonight. It's the same **** over and over and over and overr.....
