Tackling

We miss tackles a lot of time for a lot of reasons.

In this defense, we engage and hold creating running lanes/gaps. These are the gaps that players must hold, but never do. Because our defensive line is not going to close a gap or shoot one, but rather hold, it leaves it up to our backers and safeties to run into those alleys and make 1-on-1 tackles. Often times, our d-line can't hold the point and they start to 1. create a cut back lane, thus compromising our alley and giving up any hope of filling that alley or 2. creating a 'wash' of players by getting blown off or creased off their spot, ultimately disrupting our backers or safeties by running into them or allowing linemen to scrape off and block them. They also put players 1-on-1 on the perimeter with a lead blocker that MUST be beat to not create an outside alley. We lose this 1-on-1 probably 8/10 times.

Additionally, since we are not getting any push into the offensive back field, the running back has a nice head of steam where even if he is met by a linebacker or safety in an gap, he's going to gain 4-5 yards just on momentum alone. The key to stopping ANY running game is NEVER allow a back to gain a head of steam. You stop the run by destroying the LOS and setting it backwards. It's not about 1-on-1 tackling, it's about creating a swarming defensive front 7 and allowing others to clean up. Our staff is putting our kids in terrible positions and it costs us just like it did tonight. It's the same **** over and over and over and overr.....

You just gave a beautiful description of our defense and how it's ran to the T then go on to say we lose our 1 on 1 battles 8/10x's which doesn't help the scheme but THEN you say it's the coaches put the players in a bad position. But the players wouldn't be in a bad position if they win their 1s in the first place..why would it be out of the realm of possibility to believe in our players to win their 1s??

They should win more one on ones. But what you fail to realize is that tackling is not something kids will themselves to do. It has to be repped, practiced, and perfection has to be demanded.

Pete Carroll on NUMEROUS occassions talked about how theyd rather spend more time perfecting basic things like tackling and shedding blocks than complex schemes.

JJ's defense was predicated on simplicity as well, and it allowed them to spend more time on fundamentals. Thats why we put so many great players in the NFL: they all had icredible fundamentals that allowed them to shine in ANY system.

How many ******* mouthbreathers on here are going to continue to blame the players for being "busts". Are you that thick skulled?

Because the key to a good run defense is to NOT put yourself in one-on-ones. That's the central thesis here. The goals should be hat(S) to the football whenever the ball is on the ground. Relying on 1-on-1s in the run game is dangerous and it costs us repeatedly. You can't play good run defense without good help.

I just wish we would miss more tackles behind the line of scrimmage instead of missing tackles 5 yards down the field or right at the markers

you not suppose to make all the tackles and they **** sure shouldn't all be on 1 on 1 situations on the edge

The tackling, especially in the first half was ridiculous. There was a bunch of plays where 2 to 3 tackles were missed. . You really can't blame that on scheme...

Tackling must not be an emphasis for this staff. There are plenty of teams across the country with less talent and consistently better tackling.

Either you tackle the man or you dont..fck a spread defense vertically challenge bullcrap..1 ON 1 can you break down square up your shoulders, lower your pads and bring it from the hips..only Perryman can do it..sometimes...the rest of the team think they're Sean T or sumn and tackle with their shoulders or arms, **** so many guys were getting whooped in 1 on 1 blocks today somebody mightve tried to leg whip a **** tackle..STOP MAKING EXCUSES for these kids. They're big boys now and need to be held accountable. Everybody does, from coaches all the way down to number 85 on the roster

Seems like gang-tackling is a characteristic of most great defenses in college football
