Off-Topic Stock Market & Crypto Discussion

I made a risky buy yesterday. LYB has a high dividend yield but I don't know what their future is.

Do you know why the Chemical stocks have been getting killed last couple of years? IIrC a few of them popped a bit a couple of months ago.

LYB rough looking chart to me. Has been consolidating 42-44 since November though. Loses that prolly going back to around the COVID low ~34. Bunch of 10b+ market cap names have bounced around there (Disney for one) that have been sold off post '22 bear mkt.

Fed minutes this afternoon…
JMO…if the Fed loses its independence and investors feel that they are doing what the administration wants, then good news will not matter. We are heading into unknown territory..
stocks are near record highs so are we going to see a Santa Rally. Hopefully we don’t see a sell off in January from investors taking profits.

I’ve been mostly in stocks, but in the last year I’ve started dabbling more in crypto because it feels like there’s a lot happening that you just don’t see with traditional assets. Tried a few web apps and trading bots, and honestly, having automation takes a lot of the emotion out of my buys/sells, especially when markets get wild. Main thing I care about now is security, since getting rugged is a real risk, and being able to set advanced orders or use copytrade features is super helpful. Recently started testing a trading terminal called Banana Pro. It’s been pretty straightforward for swapping and tracking stuff, plus they’ve added some features that stop a lot of the scammy token issues. Worth checking if you want to upgrade from basic exchanges.

Same here. I'm ready to dabble in crypto. Any suggestions?

  • Nonfarm payrolls rose a seasonally adjusted 50,000 in December, lower than the downwardly revised 56,000 in November and short of the Dow Jones estimate for 73,000.

Jfc gulag'ing the fed chair over building renovation cost overruns not bullish. It's a big shock

Big shock? Getting Powell out will electrify the market.
Sarcasm. Does look like mkt whistled past the news in regular hours after the futures dump.

His term as fed chair is ending soon anyways. Trying to jail him for cost overruns, which is ridiculous to be clear, will make confirming a new chair that much more difficult, and Powell has the option to stay on the fed board through 28 as a regional governor.

If the ultimate goal is to remove Powell's influence from the fed board, in favor of a board aligned with Trump, this is not the way to go about doing it IMO. Would have been better to play nice with him as his Chair term expired in exchange for Powell stepping down from the board seat at the time his charmainship ended.

Maybe, but Trump doesn't play nice with anyone.

Rates in the EU, Canada, China and Japan, are all much lower, while this clown 'Powell' is keeping rates artifically high, why?

Right before the election he dropped rates 50 basis, why? To help Kamala?

He's full of **** and has lost all credibility with me.

Fair to wonder about the 50bps move before the election, but Powell's fed has cut rates 5 times since Trump won the election, including at the last 3 fed meetings. Who knows, it could all work out, as the DOJ investigation of Powell IMO makes it more likely Waller is Trump's pick for fed chair, which I think would be the best pick over Hassett or Warsh.

Waller, would be good.

I'm all for cutting rates a lot faster, i think the economy can handle it. The FEDs slow walking rate cuts, has cost me a lot of money. My kids are closing, right now, on a big RE transaction, and it's costing them a lot of money.

Yeah Waller is my choice, because he called his shot with the tariffs and said they shouldn't change the fed's cutting trajectory and he was right. Whereas Powell did get the rest of the board to pause until the last 3 meetings. Warsh is full of ****. If the fed had done what he wanted back during GFC it would have been a lot worse, and now he is captain of the dovish fed team supposedly.

Sorry to hear about the effect high rates are having on you and your family. I was supposed to close on my condo (new construction so it got delayed because of Covid material/manpower shortage) at the beggining of '22. So the rate I got locked in was very low because that was before the hike cycle began. As the closing kept getting pushed back the mortgage originator would reach out and ask, "Do you want to relock your original rate for another 90 days, will cost an extra couple of thousand at closing, yada yada...?" I lost it, and was like of course I want to keep my 3% mortgage rate locked, but am sure some economic illiterates said nah I want to "Save" $2k at closing and ended up with 4-5%+ mortgages
