Step Into My Dream: 2015 'Canes Defense

nah brah, don't Jack this thread

This thread is about the stud talent. Keep that nonsense elsewhere

Another thing on the "read and react defense", I thought it was interesting that Golden explicitly said he's never coached guys to "read and react". He said on every play guys have keys, but he doesn't teach guys to read and react.

I'm not in meetings and I don't break down film, so I don't know how much of that is lip service, but Golden is usually a straight-shooter, so maybe our problems are more complicated than "read and react" or whatever.

Saban also has 5 stars at almost every position.

And I hope you're right, we saw some slanting in the final game vs UVA.

We're loading up on defense like that. It's taken a while to restock the cupboard, but we're getting there.

Again, I think we're better off shooting gaps, but if Golden thinks he can two-gap, fine. Get it to work.

Why can't we just run a simple 4-3 man two deep with some creative blitzes? Ugh.

Why can't we discuss the talent in the depth chart that I listed above?

It's a ton of talent, no doubt. And that's not even including next year's class. I just hope we use it correctly.

There's no perfect scheme. Take solace in the fact Michigan State fans wanted to fire Narduzzi a few years ago, and now he's being fitted for a crown.

I just refuse to believe Golden is so dumb that he's going to allow us to continually get shredded for 500 yards for his entire tenure. And I also don't believe that he thinks D'Onofrio is a moron but he's keeping him on out of loyalty or something like that. Just doesn't make sense to me. I'm sure Golden has agonized over the defense, and he knows what's wrong and he's trying to fix it.

I don't know man. Jason Whitlock is looking like a prophet right now.

Then start a thread on the football board about the usage of the talent. This ain't that thread. Now stop thread jackin

He admitted that he'd only seen like two Temple games. Besides, Bernard Pierce got injured at the end of the '09 and '10 seasons. Temple probably wins the MAC if he doesn't go down because their QB play stunk.

Fair point.

I'm going to venture into the hypothetical and lose myself in the dream of this defense. (Assuming that Tracy Howard doesn't want to be a millionaire as fast as humanly possible)

From left to right and interior to DB's

Front 7:

Jack Backer: Al-Quadin Muhammad/Chad Thomas
Weakside DT: Travonte Valentine/Anthony Moten
Nose Tackle: Michael Wyche/Courtel Jenkins
Strongside DT: Ufomba Kamalu/Jelani Hamilton
SAM Backer: Alex Figueroa/Tyriq McCord
Mike Backer: Juwon Young/Jawand Blue
Will Backer: Raphael Kirby/Jermaine Grace

DB's:

Right Corner: Tracy Howard/Corn Elder
Strong Safety: Deon Bush/Jamal Carter
Free Safety: Rayshawn Jenkins/Kiy Hester
Left Corner: Artie Burns/Antonio Crawford

*If we got J.C. Jackson, I'd bump all the free safeties back a slot

Now THAT looks more like a Miami Depth Chart

I've circled 2015 is THE year. We should be loaded on both sides of the ball.

No excuses.

Did this thing get pushed back ANOTHER year?! Should I just sit next year out and wait for 2015? How long does it take not to get walked up and down the field against 100 ranked offenses man?! I dont think we can sit around and wait for one year defense.

Agreed.

Hope the linebackers in the middle take a step forward in these next two years.

We'll be better on defense next year. We'll have a talented and experienced secondary along with bona fide pass rushers. That's enough to field a competent defense. Depending on how NT and ILB shakes out, I think we're still going to have question marks against the run, but I don't expect us to get ****-kicked again.

That said, I don't think we take the big leap on defense until 2015. I know that sucks, but I've made peace with it.

With the talent in 2015 if Dorito can't have a top 30 D he needs to quit coaching and pursue other things in life

WDE-AQM(maybe depending how he bulks up), Chad Thomas, Kamalu looks like he is quick enough to play both
NT-Valentine, Wyche, Moore, and Jenkins that is depth right there, Moore should contribute his 4th year
SDE-Kamalu, Jelani, Moten

Jack-McCord, AQM(depending how he bulks up), D Jackson, Holliet, Mike Smith, and Mccray
Will-Grace, Gayot
Mike-Kirby, Young, Blue
SAM-Figatron, Owens

If we play some variations of a 4-3
SDE-Kamalu, Chad,, Jelani
DT-Valentine, Moten
DT-Wyche, Moore, Jenkins
WDE-AQM, McCord, D Jackson

WILL-Grace, Owens
MIKE-Kirby, Young, Blue
SAM-Figatron, Owens

Secondary
CB-Howard, Crawford, Dortch
SS-Bush, Hester
FS-Jenkins, Carter
CB-Burns, Elder, Bethel

Nickel-lots of flexibility here, as a whole if JC Jackson signs, it will give us crazy flexibility because either him or Burns could go to safety.

As a whole that is ridiculous talent right, ridiculous. It will be the year we finally can line up against FSU and the other elites. Its the end game regarding this defense, if we cant kick *** with that talent, it just will never work. AQM is a real dark horse here, how big does he get? Can he get up to 265-270 and keep his explosiveness and play WDE, or does he end up at 245-255 and is better suited for the Jack? I think McCord will not get bigger than 250-255, but I think AQM has a chance.

The 4-3 renderings are infinitely better.

The issue we have mostly is reps. It's hard to get adequate reps playing 2-gap in college. When you compound that by having multiple fronts (ie also 1-gap), you are now getting even less reps in 2-gap techniques as you have to rep 1-tech stuff.

For example, Chick has to be able to line up as a 4 tech. Read OL blocks for his keys, engage, read the play, then react and shed the block, then make the play. This requires a ton of reps bc there are many different scenarios he must practice.

Then they ALSO have him lined up as a 3 or 1 tech. Now he reads the ball and attacks his gap. But often they also implement stunts and games and twists, or he may play as a 5 tech, and his pass rush ****nal needs to be up to par.

In the limited practice world of the college game, there is no realistic way to have kids develop efficiently like this, unless they are fifth year seniors or former prep kids. It's just not realistic to assume an 18 year old at 250 LBs who played 4-3 end his whole life to become an elite player two years later.

They need to pick a base front, and stay with the gap principles of that front for all of their looks. That could mean mixed, but make it position specific. In other words in the 46 bear fromt the NT is always a 2-gap player, but the 3-techs shoot one gap. And you never ask the kids you recruit for 3-tech to rep 2-gap principles, and vice versa.
