Statistical Look at OSU Defense

Mendoza made a lot of off platform throws after the play broke down, and threw dimes on the few deep shots they took and just barely squeaked out 13 points.

Beck isnt going to do the former but he HAS to do the latter.

Also probably need to win the turnover margin by at least two and have a huge special teams play. You look at the schedule and yes, the list of QB's and offenses are laughable, but its not like anyone else with a weak schedule is ever allowing less than 9 points a game.

For perspective, that over a point less than Miami gave up in 2001 in the Big East.

Our offensive game plan should be pretty simple. RUN, RUN, RUN, RUN. If we want to win this game, we need to bring them to the center of the ring and slug this thing out. Make this a battle of the trenches and play bully ball. If we try to out-scheme Patricia and get cute on offense, we might be in trouble
Yes. And don’t run everything thru Toney. They will we looking for that. Go back to ND type game plan and work Toney in. CJ and Marion will have to work for the ball and fight for catches. Dont make it easy

Dawson will have to play a complete chess match here, his best ever. I’ve said it multiple times, down and distance management is of the upmost importance. We will also need CJ and JoJo to catch some 50/50s down field to help with that. If we can get them off balance, we can put some points up on the board.

Then as already pointed out, take advantage of them playing this slow pace. This is one of those games where it benefits us. We always ***** how Mario plays this way and how it keeps inferior ACC teams in games against us. Not saying we are outright inferior but on paper they have the talent advantage in the aggregate and it will benefit us.

I think if we do this, we will be in the game come the 4th when it’s anyone’s game.

We are going to have chances one-on-one down field. We are also going to have 50-50 balls due to single coverage or them trying to take away Malachi.
We needs guys like Marion and Daniels to take make plays. If they do make plays it can be a great day.
We can't make this a track meet. Patricia is going to want us to look for the big plays. If Dawson/Beck try to get cute and force things downfield, we're falling right into their trap. This has to be a sloppy and sluggish game. When I saw sloppy, I don't mean a lot of turnovers. Bully ball is the key to victory. If this is like a 10-10 game going into the 4th quarter, we have them right where we want them. I think if we bring them in the middle of the ring, we will win the heavy weight fight

Dawson needs to keep things simple and do what we do best: smash-mouth football. If Dawson tries to out-scheme Patricia, I unfortunately don't see us winning

It should be a balanced game. Not forced. I would like to see us pound to set up the play-action.
The point is they can be had just like any defense. We have WRs who can make plays against single coverage. Hopefully they execute & can come down with the ball because the chances will be there.

Well between you and me, I don’t think we win a straight up smash mouth fight in the middle of the ring with them. If we can’t do it against the ACC teams we played this year, do you expect us to do it against this defense?

Now that’s not me saying don’t run the ball but Dawson has to time his shots right and more than ever play what they give you. If they have 8 in the box, take advantage of the space via the air where they are leaving open. If they aren’t crowding the box, run it. Continually slamming the A Gap will not lead to the results we are hoping for in a couple of days.

This right here is what I wanna hear about.

Indiana scored 13 points.

However, they did have the best statistical game that OSU gave up all year. 5.96 a play. Indiana has a better offense than we do, however. But they did have some success down the field. They couldn’t run the ball for ****. If we can keep the ball away from Downs and win some 50/50 balls we might be able to generate explosives. That was the whole point of this….how do we generate enough explosives to beat them? If we think we can do it with 13 points like Indiana, that’d be great too. I don’t think that happens, however. I think we need to push 20 to win. Can we get there? And if we can, how? Nobody else has hit 17.

Yup, keep them off balance and take calculated shots where our guys have to make the play. Also any time we do make it to the RZ - 6 points will be a must. Of course it’s a tough task but we must capitalize.

Our run game scheme is completely different now. We can dominate this defense in the run game if we keep them guessing like we have the last five games of the season.

IU does have a good offense and its OL is better this year than last year, but still not in the same league as UM’s IMO. I think we can have some success running the ball.

We just did it against ANM. We did it against Florida and even ND. Again, if we wan to to beat OSU, we need to play bully ball. This should be a low scoring, sloppy and sluggish game. Patricia is going to want us to beat them in the passing game, and it's falling right into their trap. They'll bring very unique coverages and get Beck to panic and force the ball. If we go out there guns a blazing looking for the big plays in the passing game, we'll turn the ball over and the game could get bad. We can't make this game a track meet. We need to win this game ugly. Mario Ball is the key to victory

If we keep them guessing, I agree we can have success but let’s not use the word dominate here. As you said though, we have to keep them guessing which will require Dawson to play chess. If they stack the box, we aren’t running on them, we will have to throw. They are too good here. Now that’s doesn’t mean I think our OL is overmatched here either.

None of those teams are Taint though. 8-4 was weak against the run, that was easy money. The stats told us they gave up 5 plus a carry against inside zone. Florida? Lulz, solid defense but no. ND would be the closest and they aren’t Taint. Plus we didn’t dominate: sure we ran for 135 but it was at 3.5 per clip.
