This is one of the many facets that will force a pay and contract structure onto college football.

The current wild west is wholly unsustainable. Anyone who says differently is delulu. The longer this continues, the more damage it is going to cause to member institutions and the collection of athletes.

It just means everyone is bad at evaluating QBs and its a crap shoot. They miss eval in HS, the good ones go to an under heralded program, then on Saturdays they perform. It becomes no secret everyone knows, even the player knows and then he hits the portal. Then he goes somewhere else. It is pretty simple if you ask me

No but that's a big, still expensive, gamble without any quality game reps from Nickel. If Coleman's ranking rises he will cost money, not 4 million but not cheap either.

The fan base expects us to be a favorite to win the ACC and go to the playoffs every season moving forward. That means spending like a championship team.

In an environmemt with no salary cap, consistent results will require consistent investment in the roster. There is no longer any way to compete at a discount. You can argue over allocation of funds but that's just broke loser talk. OSU got sick of losing so they paid more to acquire/keep elite pieces and they won it all. What if they had ceded Smith to us? We've continued to drive up that kids price and they keep fending us off.

Spending on elite QBs is a good way to try and mitigate a second tier roster. If theres a gamechanger out there and you arent sure of your guys go get them. Bang for your buck type deal. Cam made us a 10 and 2 team when we would have otherwise been 6-6. If we trotted out Emory but brought in Caleb Downs and some other elite defensive back do we stil get 10 wins? I'm not saying drop 4 mil on No Stats Nico but if you have questions at QB and you can get a guy like Beck you go get him and figure the rest of the **** out later.

Very misleading post. I know I’m splitting hairs here, but almost all of these guys were grad transfers and/or multi year starters at their previous schools. Ewers might be the only legit guy to transfer, without doing any of that. Sanders doesn’t count in any category bc he just followed his dad.

This wasn’t some portal heavy class where finishing second in the recruitment paid dividends or multiple schools who put in time and resources into these guys, got left at the altar.

Just like the NFL now. Hitting on a rookie contract. Only difference is they're not locked into a contract. They can leave at any minute. Look at Tennessee. It's tricky all the way around

You missing the point for a QB you gone have to pay regardless. Say Beck gets hurt this year god forbid. Nickel comes in and balls out. You think he coming back the next year for cheap? Na he gonna get paid if not at Miami another school will

Mario didn't recruit herbert he was there and developed already...

Mario also didn't develop cam ward... he was a finished product discovered by others, that needed the publicity.
 
On either side of this debate, the part that doesn’t get highlighted enough is the price you have to pay for a top qb to join your team from the portal and the price you will have to pay to stop your home grown qb from leaving to the portal

Both of those will effect how much you spend on the rest of the roster. So either way we gotta be ready to pay the big bucks.

My whole thing in this is stop taking low ceiling/low floor high school qbs if your plan is gonna be to get a qb out of the portal every year. I think nickel is ok but how can him and judd be the only Qbs u take in 2 years.

We might not get as lucky as we have gotten these last two years. Soon we might be forced to play one of our high school QBs.

The NFL expects rookie quarterbacks to be ready to start. Maybe not week one but if you’re a first or second rounder, you’re expected to take the starting job at some point during your rookie year. Using salary cap space on a quarterback to sit on the bench and learn for two or three years just isn’t feasible in today’s game. Get a guy with experience who’s a little older and more mature to come in ready to contribute immediately
