Stanford Game Time Discussion *Not Announced*

You good lol

And yeup that’s my logic when i presume the discussions being had between ESPN and Stanford.

I agree 10 pm on a Friday is insane. I had to recheck when the cal kickoff was and it was 10:30 which is also crazy.

I’m about to give you some terrible news brother. I just searched the 2024 ACC schedule & on August 30th, FRIDAY, 2024, TCU visited Stanford; and the pickleball game must’ve started at 8pm because that game started at 10:30 on ESPN lol.

TCU obviously isn’t in our time zone so maybe they felt it was appropriate to keep it that late.

More research by cookies & crew found that last year when GT visited Colorado, ESPN started that Friday Night Game at 8PM EST, which is 6PM mountain timezone.

So i need to revise my estimation from 830 to 9 PM at the earliest. I don’t think they’ll start later than 9:30 tho.

Looking at 2024, you're right, however, there was a "marquee" game earlier in the night.

On Friday 8/30/24, Oklahoma played on ESPN at 7:00 eastern.
So the doubleheader game, TCU @ Stanford was at 10:30 eastern.

Those were the ESPN games that night, Week 1 Friday in 2024.

If there was another noteworthy game this year, I'd say we're totally screwed. But is ESPN gonna put North Carolina A&T on at 7:00 in their money window just to appease some Stanford students?

we will be lucky if it starts any earlier than 10 PM EST. my hope is we get 9 PM EST (6PM PST)

not sure if i've ever seen a game in any sport starting at 5 or 5:30pm PST on a friday(workday)

The ACC and ESPN didn’t just say hey let’s put our premier product from the ACC on Friday night of opening weekend with no other meaningful games being played to bury them at 10 or 1030 pm.

Miami (FL) at Stanford
LIU at Kansas
San Jose State at Eastern Michigan
North Carolina A&T at Georgia State
This

It’s going to be prime time ESPN. Where the game happens doesn’t matter as much as who is playing and how much ratings they want on basically opening weekend (a holiday no less)

I would be stunned if it’s anything but 7:30-8pm eastern

Unsure; there are US Open games that might be going on during that timeframe too

Not really the same thing but didn't the game at A&M in 2022 kick off at 9pm eastern but was still the prime time game? I've been expecting an 8 or 9pm kickoff. Nothing earlier than that. Do they do 830? That may make sense just to get it off the 5pm on the dot pacific time.

Leave the Cubs at Marlins game that Friday to head to a sports bar for the Canes game. I'm ready for the 10:30 EST start.

What did I just read?

Afternoon classes on a Friday? When was the last time you saw a college class schedule? Plus, it's ******* Labor Day weekend.

And what Stanford boosters do you think are working 9-to-5 blue collar jobs where they can't take AT LEAST a half-day before Labor Day? ****, I'll bet most of the Stanford boosters have tech jobs where they can work remotely on the day before a holiday.

As for refs, do you honestly think they are commuting on a Friday? Have you ever seen Bay area traffic? If they pull that assignment, I'm sure they are taking the whole day off without having to worry about what time they have to leave to make it to the stadium on time.

The stadium capacity is only 50K. You shouldn't be concerned about Stanford being able to sell seats on a holiday weekend.

As for "pre-dinner" and other odd times of the day, in 2024 I watched the Cal fans absolutely PACK a pre-dawn College Gameday show over half a day before kickoff. I was there.

I may not know what time kickoff will be, but do not underestimate the appetite of wealthy Californians showing up to root against Miami.
Not that long ago, actually. A lot of schools setup their classes by having a course that meets M/W/F and ones that meet Te/Th with the former being shorter in time than the latter. It also isn’t unusual for Friday only classes to be held 1:30 to 4:30.

It’s really not about whether or not tens of thousands of Stanford fans can readjust their schedules around this game; it’s about historically what has happened and why it has happened. Much easier to not readjust so many people’s routines.

Re Cal, that game was on a Saturday. Couldn’t find and don’t remember a west coast team starting at 4:30 to 530 pacific time when they are the home team.

Ahhh, that's a good pull. I didn't even think of the US Open, but that's definitely an ESPN event. The tournament runs from August 23 to September 13 this year. So there will be matches that Friday night, September 4th. So now the question is, what turns more TV's on in the Friday primetime window? Miami @ Stanford, or tennis?
