“(Defensive coordinator) Lance Guidry brings a lot of stuff whether it’s cover 0, free safety blitz, nickel blitz, all these different twists in the front,” Van Dyke said. “Seeing stuff it’s really been helpful. In the past it’s really been vanilla in the spring. I think when it gets to fall camp it really speeds up for us, so it’s good that we’ve seen everything. Get to fall camp and games, we’re prepared for those situations.”

TVD was asked how involved he gets in recruiting as Miami identifies players they are interested in via the portal:

“If he (Mario Cristobal) likes a guy, I’ll reach out to him, tell him what it’s about here,” Van Dyke said, adding of the upcoming portal window that “It’s important. You see your strengths and weaknesses in the spring, try to fill spots when needed. Not even if it’s weak, but depth-wise, we might be short on some depth at some positions. Getting some guys at some positions would definitely help us.”

▪ A former UM player who attended the Canes’ annual alumni weekend last weekend said people were surprised to see former UM coach Butch Davis, who doesn’t typically come to those events. Among others in attendance: Gino Torreta, Bernie Kosar, Duane Starks, Twan Russell, Don Soldinger, Warren Sapp, Roy Bellamy and Gary Dunn.

Sapp went on the field before Saturday’s scrimmage and was working with some of the players, offering tips.

▪ A few things we’re hearing: Two alums who attended Saturday’s scrimmage that Brown threw one beautiful long pass to Isaiah Horton (one said Horton seemed to drop it) but also was inaccurate on a deep throw. And on some shorter throws, ball placement needs work; it’s not always exactly where the receiver needs it. Brown last season was 0 for 5 on passes thrown at least 20 yards. And there has been overall improvement this spring, and that’s a positive. But there’s still work to be done. He remains an electrifying runner, and there’s optimism that Dawson can help get him where he needs to be as a passer....

A lot of time has been spent on tackling drills. Coaches know that was still a problem last year… Freshman tight end Riley Williams has the ability to someday join the list of great UM tight ends. But a former player said he needs to get stronger and tougher. He could end up playing sparingly if Elijah Arroyo, Cam McCormick and Jaleel Skinner get through this season without injuries.

UM people can’t stop raving about center Matt Lee, the transfer from UCF. One official called him immovable. He didn’t give up a sack last season. “He’s good, moves really well,” defensive tackle Jacob Lichtenstein said.

Ft lauderdale mayor is on tv saying its a state of emergency, doubt they want to take police and such to deal with a football team glorified practice.. Will be interesting to see how they deal with it. Ft lauderdale is flooded in many places, crazy that a school in coral gables has to go out that far

I’ve been around all morning, there are also tons of places that are perfectly fine so it’s not like the entire city is flooded. It’s just certain areas.

I suspect depends heavily on weather next 12hrs.

If that area of Broward takes a pounding like South Broward, probably not going to happen.

It appears most of South Broward and Dade are the ones backed up like they are.

FLL is its own aquarium with how the drainage flows (by design).

The area around Lockhart Stadium (FIGHT ME!) is actually pretty clear.

I'm still traumatized by Gaynor and Clark.

Butch was at the 1987 NC reunion a few months back at Watsco Center....I was there. The second he walked in, everyone including our coaches gravitated to him.

Bringing in Matt Lee is priceless. Glad he's a Cane

It was only the southeastern area of Fort Lauderdale that got the heaviest rain. The area around DRVPNK stadium got between 3-4".

And despite what your girlfriends may tell you, that's not a lot.
looks like that area got about 11".
