Spring Game Question

@RightSaidFred why don’t you grab the bull by the horns and take charge? So what if you find everyone here doesn’t have the “go getter” spirit that you have. Why does that have to stop you?

Bob Moss does a lot of construction work for UM and he has built a couple of sports arenas. I’m sure he can help you put a team together.

Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce is very easy to get in contact with and they have events almost every week.

Literally every single staff member at UM has their email published online.

Coral Gables is a small town. If you have questions or need guidance, someone will be able to point you in the right direction.

Tell you what.... if I ever do that, I'll name a section after you.

In other words, talk is cheap. Seems as though you want other people to do the heavy lifting. For someone who is preaching about people not be limited in going after their dreams and being told they can't accomplish something, you are willing to throw in the towel so you can stand on the sidelines while they do all the hard work. Other posters have offered advice and given you different avenues of action to proceed in getting a stadium built on campus. Yet your reply of "if I ever do that" pulls the curtain aside to reveal someone who can't or won't get up off their *** to back up all they have been posting about.

So where we partying Soring Game weekend?
Prolly Thur - Sun .

Assuming OP Traz 4/11 is accurate...

Never say never. We have 12 years left on the lease at Hard Rock. And our own trustees know that Hard Rock isn't ideal.

“Let’s hope Steve (Ross) doesn’t make it difficult,” said a high-ranking UM Board of Trustee member. “Our fans don’t like it up there; they want to be down south. That’s where our base is. You have politicians involved from the city and county, so this is difficult. ..... We don’t want to be a renter.

Hard Rock Stadium should not be the long-term plan for UM football.

I understand that the folks from Broward and Palm Beach appreciate the proximity, and that tailgaters appreciate the ample room for boozing and taking selfies. But we play most of our games in a cavernous, antiseptic venue that has seven billion things all happening at once, and it's all designed to keep your attention away from the field.

The Dolphins and Stephen Ross made the decision to prioritize the fan experience over winning, and so has UM. It must stop.

We've been renters for 93 years. That article is from before the renovations when Beckham was still trying to find a place for his stadium. Now he has plans for Melreese Country Club that involve building a 25,000 seat soccer specific stadium. By way of comparison, I believe Marlins Park held 35,000. (maybe someone has a more accurate figure) HRS holds what? 65,000? Sell that to recruits.

UM having its own stadium would be a huge pull for recruits. Especially if the stadium were on campus.

I never said anything about Beckham. That was always a dumb idea. Really, we should build a stadium that seats about 40,000 to 45,000.

You might not have said anything about Beckham, but the quote you pulled thinking it proved your point was entirely about the soccer stadium.

From your link:

...several UM officials say they believe Ross will be receptive to negotiating terms to allow UM out of its Sun Life lease if the joint stadium project materializes as UM and MLS hope.

And what do you think my point was? It was that the lease for Hard Rock ends in 12 years, and that trustees know Hard Rock isn't ideal.

I supplied a quote from a trustee saying that Hard Rock isn't ideal.

That has nothing to do with Beckham.

An unnamed trustee made those comments in the context of having the option of a joint stadium, not a bleacher filled dump like the swamp.

By the way, the Melreese site where Beckham is building is contaminated with ****nic and will cost an additional $50 million to clean up. If that happened to this magical Miami stadium of yours, how fast would they drop the idea? They couldn't even find the money for an IPF until they had no choice.

Anyone who thinks we can have an on campus stadium has never been to Coral Gables.

Residents aren’t head over heels for the university, traffic with so many local roads would be a nightmare, and there’s no room.

Only way it would have a chance is if the university buys an insane amount of land, and a N/S highway is built right to the stadium.
Residents aren't "Head over Heels" about UM is nothing new...a matter of fact...its ALWAYS been like that...Coral Gables would give zero Fs if UM was swallowed up by a sinkhole....

Guys, I've reach down deep and I think I was somehow able to access the entrepreneurial, go getter spirit buried deep within my soul to come up with a solution that everyone might be able to agree on.

I have no doubt. Gables residents mostly don’t like to hear any sound except their own voice.

We got a noise complaint and the cop laughed and dapped us up once he saw it was just 5 guys drinking by the pool in the backyard.

I miss the OB but am happy with Hard Rock, if we went on campus there would again be a parking problem like was at the OB. Now if the Fins can get it together and start winning that could attract recruits to an NFL stadium that has winners, heck we need to start winning. Imagine if every game there was rocking like the ND game...

Hard Rock is beyond anything we could ever build. Some boomers can never get past the fact that Miami will NEVER have an on campus stadium and that marijuana IS medicine.

Because the University of Miami, with its 30,000 employees and students and $2.9 billion in annual revenue has no clout at all in Coral Gables.... a city with a total population of around 60,000.

This whole "Coral Gables would never allow it" narrative is ignorant as ****, to be honest. It's exactly what the BOT would want you to believe, and I suppose gullible people are going to lap it up.

Use common sense. UM is the biggest hitter in Coral Gables by far. If UM wants something done in that city it will get done.

People also forget two important developments over the last 2 decades.

First, Coral Gables has allowed the building of a bunch of downtown high-rises, and now they have a net influx of people and traffic on a daily basis. So this is no longer "hey, we want a low-traffic, low-impact" kind of an issue.

Second, Coral Gables permitted the the building of Merrick Park, a pretty large shopping/dining district that is accessed by surface roads like US 1, LeJeune, and Bird. There is a lot of traffic in that area all the time, and Coral Gables tolerates it.

If UM came up with a solid plan, a plan that addressed roads, parking, and mass transit, and if we basically paid the entire bill, Coral Gables would allow us to do 6 weekend events at a 60,000 seat stadium. But it would take a LOT of planning and a LOT of money.

It's still highly unlikely. UM would have to sacrifice a few other priorities it has for land use. HIGHLY unlikely.

I still think our best bet is to buy a failed retail area. My personal preference is the land north of the Magic City Casino.

Again, HIGHLY unlikely. UM would need a great leader as our next president.

If you doubt that Coral Gables would not allow a stadium, then why did it take so long to build what is now known as the Watsco Center? UM had been trying to build a multi purpose building since the 60s.

Also talk to the people in the construction related business' that have to get permits to work in Coral Gables. I have a friend who installs Hurricane Shutters and won't work in Coral Gables because of the hassle in getting permits and approvals. He has enough work outside of Coral Gables to keep him busy and does not need the hassle.

Part of the delay was because Ryder pulled out of their naming rights deal.

The other part was a 10-year delay that Gables put on Miami to try to extort more money for fire/police protection (no joke). They refused to permit any building on the UM campus, which delayed the new Student Union, the Art Museum addition, and all the (planned) dorms.
