Sports Buzz: defensive scheme talk & jc jackson update

Look at that a workout with both BENCH PRESS and POWER CLEANS for OL. Arguement over both excercises have their place

Ok. You gave us the workout plan, the history and the science behind it. What we are asking you to do is apply that knowledge to football to see if you know what you are talking about or if you are just quoting something someone has said.

Now, please tell us the football position and technique that shows the actual movement of the power clean at the snap of the ball? We'll wait?

Full disclosure: I'm not a big weightlifting guy. Telling me that Iowa All-Big Ten offensive tackle and top NFL Draft prospect Brandon Scherff can hang clean three reps at 443 pounds sure sounds impressive, but I don't know it's impressive, if that makes sense.

That's where two things come in. First, from the Twitter feed of Hawkeyes strength coach Chris Doyle, the video of Scherff's feat, featuring the entire weight room stopping to bear witness and cheer Scherff on:

And second, the reaction from college football Twitter folk that know more about the subject than yours truly:

Jesus man whos we? Or is it just you whos so anal. I dont gotta expalin nothin cause if you knew football youd know that power cleans are a must for all players. It builds total body strength wich carries over to the football field. Its a functional movement wich athletes need to train. More cleans, front squats , deadlifts and push presses to build total body strength instead of bein one dimensional just benching.

Ok. So it is safe to say that you can not or know not a position in football that demonstrates the movement of the power clean at the snap of the ball?

Already said benching and power cleans have there place in a football workout. Power cleans build Overall strength, including chest, shoulders and traps and tris

Why are bench presses in the combine if they are so meaningless.
Edit: Also, if by several examples you mean one player than sure.
Its more to measure muscle endurance not strength... Guy A benches 400lbs but does 225 23 times...Guy B benches 300lbs and does 225 30 times...Guy A is stronger but Guy will maintain his max strength for a longer period of time...like the 4th Qtr...

I think power clean is the best measure of strength. ..it measures explosion from the upper body...strength of the core..and the power in the lower body...but its also the easiest exercise to get hurt performing

Impressive, but from a strict weightlifting point of view they were poor technique. His legs split too wide. A correct narrower stance would have tested his strength by his not having to drop into a clean. Points off for taking the weight off the rack and not deadlifting from the floor.

Strong young man, nonetheless. Power Cleans are a great exercise for any power or strength athlete.

Below is a correct power clean, with a push press and pause split jerk with 190kg/405lbs. Klokov is a former Olympic Silver Medalist in the 105kg/230lb weight class.

All I'm saying is power cleans are more football related to how the movements performed. It mimics the getup from the snap. When a the last time a lineman was laying on his back pushing? I can't recall

That's very impressive. Most power cleans are done from a squat position where the bar is on the ground. This allows you build power in getting the bar up to the full clean position. At the hanging position, you're standing straight up with the bar, it will only go as low are your knee to where you have to get it back up all the way to your shoulders (in the clean position). You're limited in the amount of power used to get the bar and its weight up. So in short, it's impressive.

Larry Allen, the best OL to ever do it wasn't known for his power clean. It was his 700 pound bench press that moved interior linemen out of the TV frame!

Pretty confident this is the recently banned poster of a very similar name, the one that made the retarded thread about how the US government should be spending more money on high school football.

Then why des the NFL use it at the combine if it's worthless?
Bench press means nothing

It does if you're an OL/DL and you use your hands and upper body strength to shield and push other big dudes around.
Nope

ok
Must be why the top two tackles in the draft didn't bench at the combine. Or why the history of guys that put up ridiculous bench numbers is terrible.
