Special Teams (Return Men)

I saw X and James fielding punts a week or two ago. But I think that was just them ******** around and helping the punting unit out with some live bodies.

Edit: Wow. Really? I can't say s c r e w i n g. Sheesh.

@Lance Roffers can probably confirm, but I have seen studies showing that even 10 yards additional per return on average results in substantial gains in ppg (holding all other things equal, of course).

I did a series on this a few years back called “Hidden Points” and there is a point value assigned to all yards on the field and what they add (or subtract).

Because point values are trying to predict percentages of what points are scored next, the yards within your own five yard-line are actually negative, because down there the expectation is that your opponent is more likely to score next that you are (due to field position and chances of your opponent getting ball in plus territory).

How that impacts the return game so greatly is a poor returner is more likely to make bad decisions with returns, get tackled within your own red zone, or otherwise negatively impact your team.

The series did focus more on punting etc. but it holds true the impact that special teams has on the margins of a team like Miami, where you’re trying desperately to take your expected win percentage from 53% to 55% etc.

This isn’t Alabama, where you’re going into most games at an 80% win expectancy and getting that same 2% increase is almost nothing. For Miami, that 2% etc. gained is tangible.

Yep I agree. No way Johnson redshirts tho. You really don't see rbs getting redshirts anymore.

Would love for him to get some burn but he really would benefit from a redshirt IMO. He can really bulk up and avoid the same thing that happened to Rooster. All my opinion

I respect it. Maybe he does redshirt, there are a lot of bodies in that group. I'd assume Parrish, Allen, and Chaney are the top 3 in no specific order.

Yup with Fletcher who’s coming into to take Carrie’s away from guys. That’s why I’m hoping CJ gets the year to build his body. With a BSmith Stafford and Ray Ray and others there’s no need to rush Cj onto the field
