One of the common stereotypes about South Florida QBs is that they are less prepared for the college game than quarterbacks from other regions.
But when I heard the news that Winky Flowers would start at QB for USF on Saturday, it got me thinking: almost every South Florida QBs that has come out recently started at least one game as a true freshman. Teddy Bridgewater, Rakeem Cato, John O'Korn, Ryan Williams, Treon Harris, Winky Flowers, Jacory Brissett, Jacory Harris, Stephen Morris, even Wade Freebeck.
My theory is that the quality of WR, DB and pass rush talent in South Florida-- combined with the year-round 7on7 circuit-- gets these guys mentally ready to play at college speed. And while California still has a lot more QB tutors, Ken Mastrole has been doing a good job down here.
Disclaimer: I think Flowers will have a learning curve, and I wouldn't trade our California quarterback for anybody in the nation. But I'm just trying to make a point about the ever-increasing quality of South Florida QBs. That will help Miami in the long-term, assuming they get guys who develop like Bridgewater and Cato and not like Harris and Morris.
