One of the common stereotypes about South Florida QBs is that they are less prepared for the college game than quarterbacks from other regions.

But when I heard the news that Winky Flowers would start at QB for USF on Saturday, it got me thinking: almost every South Florida QBs that has come out recently started at least one game as a true freshman. Teddy Bridgewater, Rakeem Cato, John O'Korn, Ryan Williams, Treon Harris, Winky Flowers, Jacory Brissett, Jacory Harris, Stephen Morris, even Wade Freebeck.

My theory is that the quality of WR, DB and pass rush talent in South Florida-- combined with the year-round 7on7 circuit-- gets these guys mentally ready to play at college speed. And while California still has a lot more QB tutors, Ken Mastrole has been doing a good job down here.

Disclaimer: I think Flowers will have a learning curve, and I wouldn't trade our California quarterback for anybody in the nation. But I'm just trying to make a point about the ever-increasing quality of South Florida QBs. That will help Miami in the long-term, assuming they get guys who develop like Bridgewater and Cato and not like Harris and Morris.

christ.. out of that entire list we had like the 2 worst college QB's

It's too bad that the myth of the Florida QB started because of the style of offense most high schools employed back in the day. A lot of schools have since changed offensive philosophies and you're starting to see that with the wide variety of QB recruits over the past decade. I'm willing to bet that Florida will also start producing QBs comparable in quality AND quantity to states like California and Texas. And because of that, I think OL play and recriuting in Florida over the past decade has also flourished.

we talked about this before. In addition to the 7 on 7, offenses in both lil league and HS are going to more spread looks as opposed to the wish/flex/double wing offenses of yester year. So you actually have legitimate passing games at the younger level and kids specializing in qb training from pee wee ages. Another thing that is about to change the game is the new unlimited weight football teams down here. No more having 13 year old kids struggle to make a weight limit of 135lbs to play optimist football or big kids having to play up 2 or 3 age classes. Now you can let the heavies playball and eat as much as they want. That means OL/DL can actually start being taught the game of football young, the same way other states do. I'm telling you in about 5/6 years their won't be a limit on big boys down here that are football ready. It won't quite be the same as the skill position players but it will be a lot more than what we are accustomed to now.

Flowers is playing because they have nothing else and wanna try something different. Same reason Treon got the start except they we're not planning on using Flowers at all this season.

Not really true, Coach Taggart had some Wildcat plays set up for him and refused to redshirt him when given the chance earlier in the season.

Yea I might be wrong, I was told that back in early June so they probably had a change of heart since then.

We had the worst coaching staff as well!!! Jacory was doing big boy stuff in High school others on that list could only imagine, from a leadership stand point. Randy and his lack of leadership hate that kid. Morris, well look at this team at Pace! two different players.

Just because Kaaya is incredible, doesn't mean Harris is bad. Let it go.

Let what go in trying to figure out why he was so high he is terrible... Lawson is light years better also

He QB'd the far and away best team in the country and led them to an undefeated season where he made numerous big time plays. He also handled his recruitment with level of class that is uncommon nowadays.

And he came in for the Florida-Tennessee game and played well enough even though the purpose is to hand it off so I don't know how you can say he's terrible 6 games into his college career. He's 2-0 as a starter and 3-1 in games he's appeared in thus far. Show me his stats and film and tell me why he's terrible. He's doing exactly what he is asked to do and the Gators beat a decent Georgia team in the process. He is far from terrible.

But above all else, he isn't even on the team and we don't play him anytime and soon so you decide to bash the son of one of the coaches. That sound classy to you?

And Kaaya is obviously better and Lawson is maybe a real diamond in the rough but he's in high school so the comparison is hardly valid to say he's, "light years," better than a SEC starting QB.

So I say let go of your jimmies and seek unrustlement for this weird need you have to bash a South Florida kid and child of our RB coach when we will more than likely never have to deal with.
