While South Florida doesn’t produce tight ends like other positions, it has been improving over the past decade. FSU (Nick O’Leary), Miami (Clive Walford), Florida (Kemore Gamble), Michigan (Nick Eubanks) and Illinois (Daniel Barker) have all pulled productive P5 tight ends from the area.

This is one of the better years, with two P5 kids and two more that I believe are undervalued as G5 prospects.

Mason Taylor, 6’4, 225 (St. Thomas Aquinas)- Rising prospect with elite bloodlines. Son of Hall of Famer Jason Taylor and nephew of HOF Finalist Zach Thomas. Complete tight end who can flex out, line up in the backfield or play in-line. Good, not great, athlete with solid hands. Excellent size. Competitive and physical after the catch. Also has DE experience. LSU signee.

De’Carlo Donaldson, 6’2, 215 (Gulliver)- Versatile athlete who keeps getting better. Similar in style to Brevin Jordan with excellent ability after the catch. Good lateral quickness. Lines up wide, in the backfield and even returns kicks and punts. Has some physicality as well. H-back body type. Productive both in pads and on the Immortals 7-on-7 team. West Virginia signee.

Jullian Lewis, 6’2, 204 (Western)- Natural athlete who is capable of playing outside but might project best as a big slot like Njoku. Extremely productive- 1,095 yards, 16.8 yards per catch and 14 TDs as a senior. Plucks the ball. Effective after the catch with short-area burst and ability to break tackles. Confident with the ball in the air. Did not sign in December but has P5 and G5 interest. Underrated player.

Naivyan Cargill
, 6’6, 220 (Palm Beach Gardens)- Raw, underrated converted basketball player with legitimate upside. Plays WR, TE, DE and OLB. Productive senior year with 506 yards receiving, 55 tackles, 3 sacks and 2 INTs. Skilled hooper who can shoot threes and block shots. Boxes out and wins contested catches. Physical defender with the ability to strike and upside on that side of the ball. Easy FBS talent if the other stuff checks out. Sleeper potential.

What kind of competition does Naivyan Cargill play at Palm Beach Gardens?
They play good competition, they are 8A. Dwyer is their rival which used to be a real power. Palm beach county football is a little down imo. But they played, Dwyer, Belle Glade(Travis Benjamin school), Pahokee and Treasure Coast. Edge son school this past season

Cargill looks really good as a project. If he works at his game and stays healthy, he could end up with a chance at the NFL

Cargill got better as the season went along. He really started to develop- he was tentative and didn’t use his body nor was he aggressive as a receiver early on…a few drops early but was playing like he should have been late. Took over and could have been targeted more..

First year as a starter at TE/Receiver. Kid has a ton of upside… just scratching the surface

Glad we signed Skinner but Cargill would be another great pickup for Mario and our Canes!!

I’d take cargill on D as well. He played in space pretty well for a 6’6 kid. Dropping the ball on D isn’t as bad. He is a project so bring him in add weight and see if he is better at DE/OLB or TE.

I sent him to a couple FBS coaches and they said they don’t have any room for HS kids. Portal is doing a number on the 22 class.

Isn’t it more of the Covid rule changes that caused this? If you give every kid one extra year but only allow schools to have room for them for one total year, you have a massive increase in supply. Cargill should be placed at a JC or prep school. You don’t see kids 6’6 220 running around like him. He looks like one of the late bloomers. He needs more years learning the game and adding weight. Sadly, due to the ncaa and Covid, he may never play in college.

Yep, it’s both.

Maybe he goes to an HBCU for a few years while his game develops. His size will always get him looks.

Mason Taylor had an interesting season. He looked like Gronk in the St. Francis game and the state championship game, and was like Casper (not Raiders legend Dave Casper) in between. I’m going to blame this on STA’s offense more than the young man. He could be a real weapon for LSU and Southern man Btian Kelly always seemed to have good TEs at ND.
