Just thought this would be something to monitor going forward under Coach Coley. Also try and get away from the obvious discussions the board has gone through the last few days.

2012:

RBs had 64 catches 601 yards 4 TDs
Mike James had 30 catches
Duke had 27 catches

2013 thru 9 games

RBs have 18 catches 207 yards 1 TD
Crawford has 11 catches
Duke had 4 catches

Projected through the year we will have 24 catches 276 yards

We obviously have seen a lot less screens. Pretty significant drop off in production. Thought it was pretty interesting.

Duke wouldn't have worked running screens. He's just not good in space.
 
I guess Coley hasn't gotten to the part of Fisch's playbook that contains our screen game yet.
 
I've thought about this more than a few times. Often that check down is wide open, but for some reason Steven rarely goes to it.

So his peripheral vision has gotten worse since last season?

funny...with all the talk about Dorito...we have obviously lost site of the terrible job this guy has done thus far. I know some players on O have not performed but you have got to agree that Coley has been mediocre at best.

In 2012, FSU had:

Freeman 10 catches for 86 yards 0 TDs
Wilder 19 catches for 141 yards 2 TDs
Thompson 21 catches for 248 yards 0 TDs
Pryor 13 catches for 117 yards 0 TDs

They had 5 other players with equal or more receptions (57, 38, 33, 30, 21).

Nah Cane, Steven plays scared. Not sure why, but this season he's seemed really jittery. He knows where he's going with the ball when he comes to the line of scrimmage, and if that's not there then too often he bails.

I wanted the coaches to let Corn catch passes out of the backfield. He is a miss match waiting to happen. How many ACC LBs are going to cover that kid? And he has great quickness and athleticism. Plenty of small ballers making plays on Saturday.

The scary thing is that we are pointing out the obvious. Visible to the fan. Imagine what we aren't seeing.
 
The running game has been more productive though. YPC is up and that's with a gimpy qb who has negative yardage on the year vs positive 70 last season. Avg 35 more yards a game rushing. I also think Crawford is a downgrade from a Sr running back in Mike James we had last year. Overall production is about the same between the two seasons. The Savannah st game skews things some but Morris hasn't really been healthy either.


Coley has shown more commitment to the run game which we all wanted but I agree he hasn't done a good job of getting the RBs the ball. I remember Fisch talking a lot about taking the checkdown if the big play wasn't there. He seemed to really stress it to Jacory and Morris. I haven't heard Coley mention it the way Fisch did.
 
It's been frustrating all year seeing RB's catching passes in open spaces vs us and our RB's virtually forgotten in the passing game.
 
Coley is just not a very innovative or progressive play-caller. This lack of RBs in the passing game is just further proof of that. Along with his repetition of the same stretch play 50x a game.

He's not a good OC period. Fortunately for him D'onofrio has been so bad that it has overshadowed how bad Coley has been so he has largely gone without criticism.
 
The more we talk about Coley the more he starts to **** me off. I know he is an elite recruiter but do not start with the "it's his first year" garbage. He kept Fisch's terminology and some of the playbook. To not put the ball in the hands of Duke Johnson a Heisman caliber player and Dallas Crawford who has been our TD machine is just another sign of D- coaching at its finest.
 
FWIW I didn't make this post to rip Coley. Just thought it was a significant drop off. It could be a number of reasons for the decrease in production and was hoping it would lead to a decent discussion.

I will say a guy like Duke needs more then 1 touch every 2 games in space. I do miss the wheel route out of the backfield.

This. It's just hard to corner him when the Dorito D is like a wet tissue paper of a D and gets torched by middle school QBs

Understood, but as I've said all week. Coley's inability to sustain drives, chew up clock and move the ball is what is putting our defense on the field for 40 minutes a game. You'd think Coley who knows we are weak on defense would find a way to keep our offense on the field longer instead of being the king of the 3 and out. D'Onfrio is putrid but Coley is making him look even worse. Check my stat thread is the numbers in there are staggering.
 
This was something I wanted to bring up a couple of weeks ago after watching us vs. FSU. It seems like there is not enough outlet/dumpoff passes to the RB when Morris is getting rushed. It seemed like FSU was killing us with little dumpoffs to Freeman etc. Maybe it is more common in the NFL - but it just seems like it is a part that is missing from our offense - specifically when the QB is getting rushed. Then again maybe I'm completely wrong.

Statistics don't tell the whole story but we've actually had about the same production this year but have actually played better defenses. We've seen 7 top 50 defenses so far this year versus 6 all of last season.
