(Some thoughts on) DJ Scaife

Scaife not long enough to be a tackle.....only way he sees that spot is due to injury or some serious failure of others

just had to start that faction stuff and gift the starting position to someone without a fight. ALL our QBs are mobile.

It's also about how they use their mobility in their game. Martell seems by all accounts and film that he definitely relies on his running and escapability more than the other two. Yes Perry can tuck it for a decent gain every so often and Williams we havnt seen live yet, but he seems like the more traditional pocket passer of the 3. Yes hes pretty quick and can probably break a decent run when the pocket closes and there is a lane. But in an offense wear the pocket is consistently collapsing and qb needs to scramble more often, Martells skill set does seem to fit that situation more than the other two. Not to mention you can have more designed qb runs plays and other option plays with Martell.

Not saying it is the sole reason why he should start, but it is an aspect that favors him especially with OL.

The position I've been most concerned with above all is at RT.

I'm not worried about Zion at LT despite him being a TF because he's a naturally country strong kid from South Carolina, a state that quietly produces some really great freak athletes on the regular (Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Robert Porcher, Levon Kirkland, John Abraham, AJ Green, Alshon Jeffery, DeAndre Hopkins, Jadeveon Clowney, Stephon Gilmore, Jonathan Joseph, DJ Swearinger & a bunch others, and of course most recently Zion Williamson & Ja Morant. Even right now for the 2020 class the #1 ranked player in the nation is a DE from South Carolina.)

The point being, Zion Nelson imo is a kid that will maturate into the LT spot & will develop into a legit full time starter due to his natural ability & rapid wildfire growth. He's shown he can move & does a good job engaging with pass rushers & can anchor.

Herbert on the other hand is the one I'm not so confident about. His footwork vs speed rushers has always needed serious work. He does well in the run game when he has to move forward & get to the 2nd level of the defense, it's his pass protection that will be the big question mark.

I'm gonna trust that Coach Barry obviously chose him at that spot because he's seen enough from him to feel he fits best there & hope he's improved his technique.

I've always felt Scaife projects best at Guard but is also good enough to be a very good Tackle as well. If need be, I think we could move him to RT if Herbert struggles, but we'll have to see how it works out.

As of now, I'm just hoping we have a steady 5 that has built continuity & will be enough to hold up throughout the season. We've played musical chairs on the OL for too many years as of recent & that's the one area of this team that we must get right if we ever plan on turning this thing around & become a contending team.
I agree, put your best players on the field because wherever your weak link is it will be exposed. Scaife, Gaynor and Donaldson on the interior. Zion at LT, next best option at RT and help the guy out with RB and TE chip blocks.

Both tackles will need some help. They will struggle if we let them go 1 on 1 all game. I expect Enos to be able to scheme around that tho, not like Richt when he let Burns just destroy us for **** near 3 quarters before he decided to do something about it.

Make no mistake if Zion and Herbert both playing big boy college football for the first time they will have some growing pains. We will get a good look at what we have tonight in the scrimmage. I do like the fact that Barry has stuck with those 5 all camp. Hard to get the OL to gel when you're playing musical chairs the way Searles did.

Going to need to get the quick passes going to negate uf’s potential pass rush. I don’t know why everyone thinks Mullen will do that to our defense but we can’t do the same to there’s in terms of utilizing the quick passing game

Very difficult to scheme around both tackles strugglin, one is do able. but both?! Yeesh

Scaife is a guard and should only place tackle in case of injury. I think we'll benefit more being stronger up the middle with scaife, donaldson, and gaynor. We really don't play too many teams with great edge passes rushers so I would roll the dice with Zion/Herbert. Enos will simply have to protect them with his play calling. The unit should be vastly improved by the time we play Uva.

El, I assume by your posts you have access to practice, team, etc... Herbert has been with the team for what two or three years ? and you have not seen improvement in his footwork? I know he was injured, but we should be more confident in him at this point i would think.

It’s a reason this staff hasn’t touched the starting lineup since fall camp started... because they’re the best 5 o lineman on the team right now.

Zion Nelson has been playing left tackle going up against some of the best DEs in the country on our defense... unless UF has Jadaveon Clowney or Julius Peppers on their team FCK THEM you scary *** mfkrs!! Zion is ready to go up against whoever they have lined up in front of him!! If he wasn’t he would’ve gotten exposed like Tom Kennedy and wouldn’t be a thought in the rotation.

Scaife is playing Guard bc hes the 2nd best Guard on the team.. Herbert is playing Right tackle because the staff trust him more starting at Right tackle than they do Reed or anybody else at Guard besides Scaife.

This is the best 5 no matter who we play so kill all the slow *** message board video game depth chart shuffling bullshxt :rickflair2:
*Best guard on the team. I think we'll see quickly Scaife is better than Donaldson and the most exciting part for me is him saying he studies Quentin Nelson's tape

I've said this a ton now, we establish the run game we win the game. That's how you combat the outside issues. Can't let the DEs tee off cause that's when you'll have issues. Hopefully that interior can make the difference

The coaches have the lineup right. Campbell may make a late push to start over Nelson, but Scaife should stay at guard. These Tackles are going against probably the best 4-deep group of DEs in the country on a daily basis. They should be ready for whatever Florida brings.
No chance Campbell is going to start or should. He is not very good right now

To me the answer is pretty straightforward . An interior of scaife, donaldson, and gaynor can be a strength....so you do everything you can to keep that trio together and scheme around the tackle spots .

When I say scheme, and given our mobile qbs, you can incorporate a lot of roll outs where you sacrifice one pattern by keeping that te or rb in to help the play side tackle . The weak side tackle then wouldn’t have as much on his plate .

For the first time since Fisch left we might actually have a division one caliber competent offensive system. As such I’m not as worried about the O line as others. Give me an offense that attacks the middle of the field and you’ll see how our line magically looks better

I'm confident in every other position both on Offense & Defense, except RT & QB.

Your confident at safety? I'm confident in Hall worried about who's beside him really interested to see what Bolden can do. Corner I think we'll be good I'm just somewhat worried that it's so inexperienced and there's no way to know for sure what we have until they play real game reps

Which favors ultimately picking Martell to start. He's the guy with best chance to avoid a pass rush.

NKosi is the best at stepping in the pocket and making a throw in the middle of a pass rush. Tate might be the best at scrambling even when WRs are wide open but this isn’t an Urban Meyer offense.
