Some of my tidbits from the Bethune Cookman game

I had interesting seats; 45 yard line 7 rows up. Here's a few things I saw that I dont believe have been mentioned.

  • BCU had some FAST wide receivers. That team has some skill position dudes on offense. I think our DB's were surprised by their offensive speed. It took a series for our D to adjust to it. I think BCU will score a ton of points against their level of competition in the SWAC.

  • BCU had some tiny-*** dudes on special teams. I would not read too much into our return game success from this game. Their kick coverage team looked smaller than some high school JV teams Ive seen.

  • I really liked what I saw from Caleb Johnson. He tracks really well. Maybe not the fastest but he seemed to diagnose plays really well. "Always around the ball" kinda guy. He was also coaching-up Wesley Bissainthe presnap on every play when WB came in the game.

  • The improvement in mini-Borregales' leg strength was plainly evident.

  • Darryl Jackson's presence jumps out at you when he's on the field. As soon as the teams break the huddle and get to the line you immediately see that Darryl Jackson is notably larger than everyone else on the field. He's the "Woah, who's THAT kid?" guy.

  • After the D got the first turnover, it was interesting to note the absence of the turnover chain. Being at the game it was a good thing. It kept your focus on the game. Before everyone would take all of their attention away from the game to watch this big celebration party then have to refocus your brain on the game. I have to imagine it's the same for the players as well. It came off as more "pure football" without the distraction of the chain.

  • My excitement over Jake Garcia continues at the highest level.

  • Regardless of the freak athleticism of the two Williams, Kam Kinchens is the best safety on the team. Side note, I think Brian Balom is an FCS all-conference caliber player. Dude is just buried behind three elite level safeties.

Anyway, I rarely start threads but thought I'd throw some Sunday morning after-thoughts out there that I didnt see discussed. Oh and it was hot as balls in the first half yesterday. lol
Good thing the chain is gone. Mario may have strangled Kinchens with it and we’d be looking for a new coach.

Not many people realize the BC QB was a 4* kid coming out of high-school and I read he was committed to UF at 1 point in his career. We will see a step up against Southern Miss. Hopefully we'll have a better understanding of what we have after that game and then the real test week 3 at 1 of the loudest venues in the nation

I thought this guy was not your usual Bethune QB. He seemed to have a good bit of awareness and was able to get away from pressure really well.

Great take SFBay.

DT might be the deepest position we have been at that position in the last two decades. Darrell Jackson looks and plays the part. LT56 in blossoming and he should make more plays next to him. Mesidore plays DT on passing downs, and Lichtenstein, Moultre, and the rest can all start on just about any ACC team, except maybe Clemson.

DEs were average, not outstanding. DEs need to get more pressure, more sacks and better contain.

I will be interested to see what changes or adjustments the Canes coaches make for next week. Many of these mistakes are correctable, but these mistakes must move from the correctable category to the corrected category if the Canes plan to have a great season.

I was very impressed with the offensive play calls and execution. 7-7 on third down and a score on every possession (except the fumble in the red zone after the KR), is impressive.

It was remarkable to see how much the OL really improved. I haven’t seen OL play like this since Stoutland was coaching the OL.

Not a single dropped pass all game.

O line looked way better. I hope they keep up that energy all season.
That was my biggest takeaway. The backs weren't touched until they were 5 yards downfield.. I think Knighton and Parrish and that are going to make a monster backfield. Parrish is quick, Knighton might be a little more shifty and faster, And Thad is that bruiser you need in the redzone.

He looked like it. They will score a ton of points in FCS. I will be keeping track of them. Kid was fast and had good accuracy when the pocket wasn’t collapsing. That throw he made on the run to the end zone was a DIME. It took a GREAT play by Steed to prevent the touchdown.

People are complaining , but BCU had talent at the skill positions.

I like the defense being tested. There have been a ton of overreactions nitpicking a team that gave up 13 points to a team with talented skill guys. We are going to face ACC teams who don’t have skill guys as good. **** Virginia is the only team with a qb who can run anywhere close to the BCU kid.

Still called a few pressures but otherwise, we were bland. We played way more off coverage than I expected. When we jammed, we shut them down except for the on Stevenson got beat, but those plays WILL happen when you jam. Jamming allows you to destroy an opponent’s offensive rhythm in exchange for an occasional big play. The risk is worth the reward.

Gattis and Steele treated this game like a practice ironing out things for the future. I liked the approach.

I would have thought we gave up 35 by the comments.

The team will improve. Overall I really liked what I saw yesterday. This ain’t a Manny team.

Yeah he was the guy who went to Florida as a four star and then immediately got kicked out and then his roommate Chris Steele transferred out. Supposedly a really weird dude. But clearly has four star level athleticism

I replied in a different thread that I felt that they had a handful of players that could contribute at UM and many other P5 programs. Glad others noticed this too.

They had some real talent for an FCS team. They have had an influx of FBS transfers. That offense will put up numbers.

Good stuff and much needed after your “FSU winning is good for college football” nonsense

❤️

But seriously appreciated. It seemed to me that yeah it’s Bethune but they had some athletes. The transfer portal is giving back to a lot of these schools they seemed to have quite a few guys that were somewhat noteworthy prospects at one point

Could be wrong

Great post and agreed with many points but as someone who cares about respecting someone’s name and getting it right, I have to point out his name is Darrell not Darryl.

Middle of the field only seven rows up. The seats provided almost a field level view. Much different perspective than my normal (10 yard line) club level seats. One example is that you could really tell the size differential between players.

Until 3:45PM yesterday, to me he was "The kid from Maryland." :giggle:

At least now I know his name and number.
