Rumor SoFL Down Bad...😬

God's honest truth...

I wear a LOT of UM polos and shoes...and I am CONSTANTLY getting into conversations with Miami expats who have moved to ATL and want to talk about them Canes.

One dude stopped his car in the middle of a Publix parking lot to talk about Carson Beck. It's just wild how many people from SoFla have moved to ATL.

It's been a few years since I've done UM road games, but I remember bumping into quite a few UM supporters at the Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina games, and alot of them were folks originally from South Florida who moved into those respective areas. You see similar when the Fins play at Washington and Baltimore.

School choice has destroyed South Florida athletics. Not debating whether its a good or bad thing-- just saying one of the unintended consequences of charter school and voucher proliferation has been the erosion of public school athletics.

There was always school choice in the area, especially for black students willing to attend a non-black majority school. Someone once told me this was a legacy of the 1970s, when there was an effort to desegregate high schools. I think another issue is there being so many high schools these days. For example, there is something like 5-6 schools in or bordering Hialeah. This leads to massive dilution of talent, especially in era where you have less kids playing the sport.

I tell ya what’s sad

20 years ago I could travel anywhere with a Canes hat on and you would get people throwing up the U or telling me ā€œ**** the Uā€

They don’t even trash talk anymore no one cares

That’s why I just kinda shrug when people throw us in the conversations recruiting against the top programs

Bingo.
Changing demographics and dilution.
When I graduated there were 4 High Schools in the West Palm Beach area, 5 if you count Lake Worth High, plus Cardinal Newman.

Students in the 70’s were bussed between those 5 schools to desegregate. OJ Anderson got bussed from his neighborhood to Forrest Hill, he literally would pass Twin Lakes High to get to Forrest Hill.

Years later Forrest Hill almost stopped playing football because its student body changed demographically to a very high % of Mexicans, who prefer soccer and baseball to football.

Now that same area that fed those 5 public high schools has roughly a dozen public high schools.

Their are a lot of reasons and many have been stated in this thread. The S. FL transferring has got to be the highest of any area nationally and their are other places that are also bad. I don't know this for fact, just assume. Coaches have been leaving for other states for years, now. This just didn't start. I think the affects are just starting to be seen.

Good stuff.

We (FHCHS) were so bad in the late 90s early 2000s.

We actually had a pretty good team a few years back.

In the 80s there were about five Jeremiah Smith athletes from South Florida every year, now there is one every five years

Not great for the Canes
