So......

He's an excellent coach, playing with a lot of spare parts. He turned down the HC position at Temple to be here, and we're lucky to have him, internet fandom notwithstanding.

I agree. I got roasted on here for saying he was a good coach and well respected in coaching circles (even though I heard it from someone who is in that circle). Glad he is here, not many will outwork him. If we can develop/find some DL our D is going to be nasty sooner then later.

I think he is finally taking away some of the stuff on the edge. Hopefully he can accelerate the install next year because of the continuity. He plays ways way way to vanilla in the early part of the year.

I am happier about the D now than I was before. It has to keep getting better though.

Defense was better then "bad" last night. Other then the long TD run in which DP inexplicably vacated the middle, they played well. You can start to see an identity on D much like an Alabama team. We are playing hard nosed football. Even when Thomas made some nice runs he paid for it at the end. Wide receivers were getting slammed to the ground. VT running backs were running out of bounds rather then get hammered. This young team may miss some assignments but they are laying the wood and imposing fear in the other team. For a defense that was on the field for 90 plays they never tired and matched the intensity of VT. Tell me one defense that plays that long and still wins the battle at the LOS at the end. This is Utough developing in front of us.

Key series of the game - VT down by 8 in the fourth and their OC rallies the troops on the sidelines. VT players are hyped, dancing around, and Thomas is in their face telling them they are going to win. If I saw that in the past I would be worried about Miami matching the intensity. How did the young Miami defense respond? They absolutely beat down the VT offense in 3 plays. On the second play that should have been a sack McCord tried to kill Thomas. You see a team respond like that you have to be excited.

I think DP tweaked his ankle on that play and that's why he wasn't in position to really do much of anything.

Exactly how devoid of seasoned talent, senior leadership, depth, and experience does a UM team have to be exactly for our internet fanbase to maybe take a breath and say "hey, this might not be the coaches fault right now?"

I hate to keep parroting myself, but we are just plain terrible on defense roster-wise. There are people starting that should barely be sniffing special teams right now, or should have been run off already.

Give Coach D a break. He's trying to make lemonade out of lemons. We're lucky to have him. If it were up to Temple and a few other schools out there, he's be a HC right now.

I agree with those defending Coach D due to the talent he's working with. The only fair way to assess a coach with glaring talent issues is to watch the progress of the unit over a period of time and see if they improve or regress. To me it looks like we are gettting a little better as of late, but to be fair, you have to let the season play out.

One thing for sure is our kids on D play hard and stick together as a unit, even after the debacle to this point on the field this year. Teams getting gashed this bad over a period of games typically quit or start pointing fingers and that hasn't seemed to happen. Coaches have stuck behind the kids, kids have stuck together, and now they are in a position to play some meaningful games. These kids are growing up fast.

Can we put the D back in "Coach D"?

It certainly ain't pretty at times but right now he is getting more and more out of these guys every week. With such a rough roster I think that's about all we could ask for.

2nd half shutout in the biggest game we played since they have been here.

Not a big fan of these “gotcha” bumps. Aholes do this to try to embarrass porsters and try to make their miserable selves feel superior. @JHallCanes actually handled it quite well.

You won’t find one single positive comment from me about sweaty and Dorito, but I get how some people just got caught up in the moment.

It’s human nature, and almost a normal defense mechanism, to talk yourself into thinking things are better than they actually are. Mainly because no one can predict the future, and retrospectively looking back is always 100%.

Must be a slow day of us. Nothing better to do than bump a 6 year old thread.

Mods - how about locking threads this old?
