I heard it wasn't as much a done deal as it was trending to be but he's still in the running. His perceived moderatism and not far left enough stance is hurting him. But the money and academic strengths he would bring with military, federal, and Tufts connections is too compelling.

Gregory Maggs, Dean of Law at George Washington University, and Davison Douglas, Dean of Law at the College of William and Mary are also being considered.

Notice how all of those guys are at schools where sports are nothing--Tufts (sounds like a hemorrhoid cream); GWU; and Bill and Mary.

That should tell you guys all you need to know about the continued direction of UM.

Tufts is in the nescac conference which is arguably the most competitive D3 conference

Jay Pearson was hired because he was a marine biologist and the school wanted that to be a focus.

Tad Foote was hired to make business a focus.

Donna Shalala was hired to make medicine a focus.

The next president will more than likely be hired to make the law school a focus.

Not sure about Pearson, but based on Foote and Shalala, seems like they are following a failed strategy. Business school sucked in the nineties and still sucks. Now UM owns a hospital that is bleeding red ink. Good luck to law school, but the trend is not its friend.

Foote gave the business school an enormous boost with his initial hire and while not dominant he kept it as above par.

Shalala made the medical school an absolute powerhouse but undermined herself by mismanaging UHealth every step of the way. The medical is still dominant however.

Law school can't really be lower ranked right now. A Tufts pedigree should help it instantly.

Especially one who has strong ties to the Clintons and who certainly isn't the douchebragger type of solider the right loves to canonize.

If we could reanimate the corpse of Chris Kyle or find someone that toes the line of God, Country and killing brown people in Iraq to protect my freedoms, we'd certainly see a boost from that side of folks.

From what I've heard and been told, nobody with an explicit engineering background is being considered but the Admiral has military connection to contractors and engineers that would put him in touch with high level teachers of the subject.
