Simple but alarming stat

I like yards per play. It's a simple, catch-all stat that isolates effectiveness on both sides of the ball. Several analytically inclined coaches (including Manny Diaz) really emphasize this metric.

Here are Al Golden's average yards-per-play rankings at Miami:

Offense- 21
Defense- 71

This made sense, as he often had explosive, big-play offenses (led by guys like Duke and Dorsett) and defenses that couldn't get off the field.

Manny Diaz changed the defense immediately. Our average defensive ranking jumped 62 spots, to 9th.

The offense is a different story. It slipped 23 spots, to 44th. This year, we are 62nd.

The bye comes at a bad time for fans but a good time for the coaches. I don't expect Richt to come back with the 2018 Rams offense. But I'm hoping he adjusts like he did after the four-game losing streak in 2016.

Richt asked to be accountable for the offense when he took the job. There is nothing wrong with the fans giving him what he asked for.

That's all well and good...but why does it take a losing streak or 2 years of bad play calling for him to change?

I'm sorry, but the sample size tells the story here. He was removed as the play caller at Georgia for this very reason. The answer isn't as simple as coaching adjustments during a bye week, the entire scheme needs to be thrown in the garbage.

We need a **** dedicated OC. Period.

The good folks in Johnny Rebel Yokum county say... " stat's don't lie. " Whereas most, but not all, Cane fans say stat's are meaningless and subject to interpretation and all that. dUh.

Honestly the term lethal simplicity should be used by cmr and not Taggart

We only run like 5 plays, can’t be more simple than that

The most alarming "stat" is, even if we see some changes now and utilize that crazy space in the middle of the field and some other aspects of basically any modern offense, we've now repeatedly seen changes made only after there's no other reasonable choice.

Not a recipe for success in CFP landscape. We should keep an eye out for when/if that stubbornness trend ever breaks. Considering quotes and looking at games from the 2000 FSU season, it's reasonable to say it may never change.

Great post.

Looking forward to seeing if there really is any self-evaluation by the offensive staff.

I know this porst will get down voted to oblivion but is there ANY chance Richt Jr can call plays better then his dad? As far as I'm concerned James Coley who I think ran a better offense then Richt did not call plays at FSU or had any real play calling experience but he was young and had ideas he brought to the offense and made Kaaya look like a top 5 pick. At this rate, Richt Sr is going to reach Patrick Nix levels if he isn't already there.

Averages are ok but without context, they can give a false sense of reality. And paint with too broad of a brush. I dont disagree that dropping in average yards per play is bad. Just that even that 21st ranking under Golden doesn't really tell the story of the boom-or-bust nature of the offense and the results of the busts.

I'd like to see our scoring efficiency and avg. starting field position.

This post right here nails my concerns. 100% spot on.

I simply have no faith in Richt at this point. If we ever did get in a situation where we played a meaningful game against a good opponent it would be hard to have any sort of faith he'd be able to scheme a gameplan to outcoach any quality DC in a playoff atmosphere.

The problem with that scenario is dad will be in his ear.

We need an OUTSIDE mind with OUTSIDE concepts. I want no part of that playbook kept.

True but maybe the play calling pattern is different and less predictable. When the QB needs to get in a rhythm Richt Sr's solution? Run 4 verts. Maybe with Richt Jr. He might actually throw some wr bubbles and get QB in a rhythm better then his dad. His play calling might actually have rhyme and reason to it.

Just wishful thinking.

An who is going to be the QB executing these plays? Cause both of the current guys are not getting the job done.

Fire Jon Richt, Fire Stacy Searels, Get a new OC!

I dunno... I’m pretty convinced JR would be better than Sr. If for no other reason than JR is a human person Other than sr.

Richt believes in his 30 year old playbook ...we need to out athlete everyone regardless of offensive style. He needs two more recruiting classes 2019 and 2020 is what he is banking on to prove his point.

I hear you, and truth be told it's wishful thinking on my part than any change will happen since I don't think the administration cares or views the situation anywhere near as dire as we do......but if you do something you do it right. No retreads or guys from his coaching tree, we need an entirely NEW SYSTEM.
