I mentioned uga and uga only stop entering other names. Again it's a playoff and the old BCS was dog **** too. I'm saying Mark Richt had a perennial strong team and underachieved. I'm done going back and forth. We will agree to disagree.

4 teams have opportunity in the CFP versus 2 in the old system. Kirby would not have been in under the old system, but had the opportunity under the new. That is an argument for people who compare what Kirby did to what Richt did.
 
Here is the part that I hope Coach Richt took some time to reflect upon and decide what he can learn from that whole situation.

You can handle a situation where you're being disrespected without screaming and cussing. Richt will hopefully either align himself only with people that this sort of thing would never happen, or would have some teeth in that moment. The players are watching. They need to see accountability for everyone and when that isn't happening, it costs you some respect.

I do believe Coach Richt will come out a better leader for having had this experience, as it seems he has really made it a point to be the leader of the program and not forced into decisions by administration. To their credit, it also appears the administration understands their role is to support the vision set forth by the man they hired to be in charge.

For me, Richt's time here has been a solid B+/A- and it's because of that experience that I believe he will continue to excel.

He underachieved only in the sense that he never got over the hump and actually won the National Championship. But seriously when did winning a National Championship become an expectation at UGA? Miami in 02? Yes, the National Championship was the expectation and Larry Coker failed. But is a team that has only won One National Championship post WW2 really in the position to be EXPECTING a Championship? I mean he DID have them competing for one, as the fact that he'd have been in the CFP if there was one suggests....

I think people like you are just retrospectively acting like Richt was some bad football coach when he absolutely wasn't. Yes he never won the ultimate championship game, you're right. So sure you can say in that regard he underachieved. But in pretty much every other regard he overachieved in the grand scheme of things

When the naysayers pile on Richt they ignore what he took over. Did the wins go up or down? More or fewer SEC titles? More or fewer NFL players? Bowl record?

Furthermore, why assume you've seen anyone's ceiling before they coach in Miami? That would rule out nearly every coach in the country.

Richt mos def took UGAFB to another level, but let's not act like He took over a dumpster fire...Paul Johnson:

“I get a kick out of when people say they don’t have any players,” Johnson said Monday following the Jackets’ first practice in preparation for the Bulldogs. “Compared to maybe the Pittsburgh Steelers or something. I mean, they’ve got a lot of good players. They’re running around everywhere.”

“When’s the last time the University of Georgia didn’t have a top-10 recruiting class?” he asked on an AJC podcast . “So Coach (Vince) Dooley was a great recruiter, Ray Goff was a great recruiter, Jim Donnan was a great recruiter, Mark Richt’s a great recruiter. Who was a bad one? Because I don’t remember having a coach when they weren’t top 10.”

Fair, but I'm speaking in response to him not winning a National Title. It's not like the previous coach had won one either. I'm not saying 2000 Georgia was a dumpster fire. However, it did not take him long to win his conference twice.
 
Richt is an excellent coach. He would've been in the playoff is there was one in 2002 & 2007, but not in 2012. He would've had a great shot at winning it in 2007.

But his reputation for not underachieving is well earned.

Compared to other SEC schools & coaches during his time at Georgia:

Fulmer - Won a NC at Tennessee just before Richt got there
Saban - Won NC's at 2 schools and had Richts number
Meyer - Won NC's at 2 schools and had Richts number
Miles - Went to 2 NC's and won 1
Auburn - Went undefeated under Tubberville, Chizik won a NC, and Malzahn went to an NC
Spurrier - Had Richts number

Richt only won the SEC championship 2 times, and hadn't done it in 10 years when he got fired. It's not so much much he didn't win the NC, it's that he never even got to one, and struggled at just winning the SEC. He struggled at beating Florida. He got blown out too much.

You keep falling short while a bunch of your rivals are having success, and you develop a complex. And that's why Richt got fired.

And given the success Kirby has had already on the field and in recruiting, it's very hard to say Georgia didn't make the right move.

Well stated. I am all in on Richt, but there was a reason UGA decided to go in another direction after having him there for 15 or so seasons. Grew up in the Atlanta area so I am very familiar with UGA and all that goes on there (though I was never a UGA fan, never even thought about applying there out of high school). Though they thought he was a good guy and respected him, a lot of the fans, boosters, alumni etc., had all grown weary of Richt and his inability to "get over the hump." While it's true he raised the profile of UGA, and with that comes raised expectations. Not winning the SEC since 2006 and seeing other coaches come in and pass you up made a lot of UGA fans anxious and weary. For as much as he won in the SEC, he definitely had a bunch of blunders/missteps (remember when they lost to a George O'Leary led UCF team 10-6 in a bowl game), his record vs Florida was abysmal. Even when they weren't good you could still pretty much count on UF curb stomping UGA. As bshaw28 stated, UGA appears to have made the right move (which is working for us as well) by firing Richt as in their second year they made the NC game, was one half away from winning it (yes they were a lot of Richt's players, but Kirby got them there), they had the top recruiting class this year and don't appear to be slowing down. I know a lot of UM fans were beside themselves when UGA blew the lead and lost the NC game because in the back of their mind it sort of did away with the argument (at least for the time being), that UGA's firing of Richt was justified.

Richt had a better record at UGA than Smart after two seasons and had his 2nd team (2002) in exactly the same spot as well.

Kirby didn't even have to play the best team in his league to get to the playoff. When he did, he lost.

Richt won the SEC in 2002, but didn't play for the NC. BCS politics aside, that perception means a lot in the eyes of UGA folks. Now you can definitely make an argument that had the CFP been around back then UGA under Richt would have had a shot, but it didn't and they didn't play for the NC in 2002 and did in year 2 under Kirby and were close to winning it. I know TONS of UGA fans and not one of them would trade Richt for Kirby at the moment.

We don't have to speculate. Georgia was #3 in both polls and in the BCS in 2002.

Your logic is silly.

They basically had the same exact seasons in 2002 and 2017. The only difference is there was no playoff in 2002. Somehow you're giving Kirby extra credit for something that he had nothing to do with?

1-5 vs. Meyer
2-5 vs. Saban

2008 was the beginning of the end when Georgia was ranked Pre-season #1. They were stacked on both sides of the ball - Stafford, Moreno, AJ Green, Geno Atkins, Justin Houston, Reshad Jones. Lots of Pro Bowlers & 1st round talent.

And in 2008 they got absolutely destroyed by Alabama and Florida, then also lost to GT.

2007 & 2012 were 2 of Richts best Georgia teams:

2007 - Lost by 7 to a 6-6 South Carolina team
2012 - Lost by 28 to a 11-2 South Carolina team

Spurrier had 5 teams that ended up in the Top 25 when he played Richt, and Richt was 1-4 in those games.
