SIAP - Ed Reed on the Transfer Portal

I don't mind the portal, but the gist of what he's saying is that kids would rather hit the portal than wait to see minutes. That in turn takes a spot from a high school kid looking to secure a spot.

I'm with him on waiting to play. The vast majority of freshman and even sophomores shouldn't be college ready and need to put in work to see the field.

What are we teaching these young men? I truly believe they should sit for one year on a transfer, but the NCAA is handing out immediately eligibility like it's Halloween and the players are the trick or treaters at the door.

Now if it's your final year of eligibility, graduated, you can play right away.
Coaches don't have to wait when they hopscotch schools, why should a student-athlete?

Student-Athletes are the only people on campus that have limits to what they can and can't do if they decide to transfer. If a very talented chem major decides to transfer, no one says he can't work in a lab for a year.

I say if you transfer out you can only play a limited amount of games that year. If you’re in your senior year and graduated you can play right away.

I’m sorry, but the portal is a microcosm of what’s wrong w/ these kids. They always look for an easy way out, instead of working hard for ur keeps. As soon as adversity hits, they want to hit the door. It’s bull chit, and that wasn’t the intent. The results have been a str8 clog where kids have entered the portal & have either gone to worse situations or not come out of the portal at all. It’s become an unintended consequence, and have f’d up mentalities.

I do agree mostly, but I also don't mind it. It's like a school of hard knocks. You either learn it where you are or hit the road finding out the grass isn't always greener elsewhere. Some will even outright play their hand in the portal right out of the sport.

It's an option though and I like options. The portal is just a more visible way of shopping themselves. It's much the same as before, your intent is to transfer. Kind of like a phone book where you can see who's available.

Still, kids gotta work. My kids will **** me off with games in particular if they can't figure out a problem, they youtube a walk through. Search, use your brain, solve the problem, etc. Here Dad, help me beat this. No, you do it. Find a way that works.

Kids always looking for the easy route. It's a battle every day. There are no shortcuts that pay big dividends. Bust your *** and you'll make it. If not, maybe just get your degree. Got that, okay, go give it a while elsewhere.

Seeing Freshman and Sophomores transfer out, I just shake my head. **** is getting ridiculous.

Crazy idea: As an underclassman if you go from FBS to FBS you should have to sit a year, if you go from FBS to FCS you’re able to play immediately (academic and legal standards in play of course).

If you’ve graduated from your school you’ve earned the right to play the immediately, regardless of your origin or destination.

You get 4 maybe 5 years to maximize your potential to see the field and turn football into something more...

do what's best for you kid. Your coaches are going to do what's best for them and their program, the **** with whatever they tell your parents while they're recruiting you

We talk about some new age of kids not sticking it out bc the old guys were tougher. I'd bet my last dollar that a whole lot of the old school canes we idolize would have finished up elsewhere if transferring without losing a year was a possibility. Mindsets haven't changed, options have (rightfully so).

Willis McGahee had to wait a long time behind Portis and got very frustrated. He also didn't get along particularly well with Portis. Coach Sol spoke about this on the Lamar Thomas show (which was a "must watch" with Coach Sol and Alonzo). Had the Portal been available then, we may never have seen the best single season ever by a Miami RB (and that electrifying screen play in the 4th quarter against FSU).

The way some coaches (like Shannon) put players in the dog house (mostly rightfully so but sometimes perhaps unfairly -- see the story Devin Hester told about garnering too much media attention & being "too big of a star" for Shannon), I think it's only right for players to have some mobility. Coaches change frequently and the players only get one shot to make it. When a coaching change happens, the old guard is often less valued than the new coach's own recruits. That's another tough spot to be in.

There's no doubt (especially when talking about Miami) that the best route for the players is to work hard, be patient and compete for the right to play. Most players that leave the program don't fare particularly well elsewhere...and the grass is definitely not always greener on the other side.

However, the Portal provides a level of mobility to players that only seems equitable given how frequently coaches change etc.

And THIS is why I'm done with the jock sniffing of our old letterwinners. They see everything through the prism of when they played, very few ever evolve. The transfer portal helps keep schools like Alabama from straight up hoarding talent, kids have more of a say in the marketplace than ever before. It also gives teams a way to upgrade spots, without having to wait YEARS for development.
Does it though? Didn’t Bama sign two top guys via the portal last offseason?

I know Mcgahee...Rather well...and I've known Sarge even longer....Willis wasn't going anywhere..If ANYONE would've gone portal back then, it would have been Portis...who fell out of favor with Butch...hence, James Jackson seeing more playing time than Clinton.
