Shodell on the morning podcast show

I believe some of this but practice being a country club? I 100% doubt and don’t believe that at all! It would have been more believable if the rumor was practice was hard and exhausting and it may have wore some guys out physically and made them play more tight.

We can have a lot of gripes about Mario. Practice intensity I don’t think is one of them.
That was NEVER said. Not even implied. He said practice was flat and less intense.. That's a far cry from "country club"

Country club is probably the wrong term, but if you believe they slowed the offense down over concern for depth defensively, why wouldn’t you believe they ratcheted down physicality during the bye week to facilitate some recovery.

One is very consistent with the other.
One of the podcasts talked about mario handling the long season, particularly during the next long stretch of games, very much like an NFL team handles their personnel. Guys will get "off days" to recover. 100% what you just said.

Seems like a reasonable plan to me.

This is 100% correct. OP really took some lilberties with his commentary. He NEVER used the words Country Club or ever said anything like that. He said practice was flat. Lacking energy.
This is why people shouldn’t have opinions on things they didn’t listen to . If you’re too lazy to listen to what they said then you should be too lazy to have a take . It annoys me.

You sent me the link this am and I heard what you did . Matt was very careful with what he said. He could’ve went deeper but he kept it professional. And you know I’d like nothing more than to bury CS lol.

This.

It’s been the theme all season. You do not play ball control at the expense of points. Trust your defense and put points on the board. Besides, Louisville not only put more points on us but they won the time of possession. SMH.

establish points, then you can establish the run game late -- that's the general Bill Walsh game plan

Fundamentally anyone who doesn't comprehend it is better to score on 1 play than 10 is an idiot.

I believe some of that but doubt the country club rumor.

The offense is obvious. I actually think protecting your depth on D, especially #3 and #4 is wise because we'll need them and it's a long season. It's not a terrible strategy but Mario doesn't know when to turn it off when the team needs to just go out and score points.

I doubt the Beck rumors are fully true because being uncoachable is a sure fire way not to get drafted, regardless of what you show on the field. If Kirby smart and Mario are both telling NFL scouts that Carson is uncoachable, he's not getting a high draft grade. But I definitely know Carson wants to reverse the narrative around him and get back into the early first round conversation so he's taking shots he shouldn't be taking..we can see that on the field.
Or you protect your depth by rotating other guys in. Eventually they need reps anyways. What happens come Playoff time if they aren't ready for the moment? Better get them reps now and make sure they're active and feel like they are contributing.

After 4 years and millions of dollars spent on recruiting and signing HS and portal transfers.

Here is an idea, score a bunch of points so that you can rotate more players on both sides of the ball, thereby giving starters more rest, less wear and tear plus added bonus of his giving backups much needed playing time.

If this is indeed about Mario slowing down the offense, then he's an imbecile.
I believe that’s the consensus. Here we are again and back ups get little to no PT. Same S**t as last year. And then we cry about lack of depth.

I don’t know about the Beck stuff, so I won’t say anything.

As for the practice. They got pretty physical on Tuesday (sorry!) when I was there.

If he calls that a country club, I don’t know what to say.

You’re also not going to be as intense as you were in the summer in the middle of the season. It’s 17-games if you play that long. It can be physical and intense without turning it into a meat grinder.

Shodell is pencil-necked ****** who doesn’t know what he’s looking at.
If anything logically it'd make sense for our FIRST Bye to have been a more physical one, then our Second bye to be less physical (at least for the starters), so that you can get some active recovery given we had a 7 week in a row slate after that point...

While I think the source may be bull****...I don't think the story is too far fetched. A few of us called this last year about the defense...it was better if they weren't on the field. But it jacked up offensive rather. We could've easily averaged 45+ a game last year. I think we are good for 35 with this offense, but the quick 3 and outs bog it down.

We all know we don't have defensive depth and I'd be trying to find ways to keep them fresh. But as another poster mentioned....score a bunch of points and you can play walk on ffs.

It's all fun and games, until you don't have a gameplay to comeback from a 14 point firat art deficit because you were playing kill the man on the 10 yard line.

*SMU

Stanford stinks.

And they’re making a cross-country trip on top of it, coming off a by-the-seat-of-their-pants win.

Some people are going to call it a get right game, but This game won’t tell us ****. Beat SMU and we can start to talk about some progress. But even then I’ll be concerned about @ VT and @ Pitt

The second part is what I’m talking about. If the Stanford game is competitive for a single drive, we are cooked.
A single drive? There are drives that stall against even FCS teams, but we’re now expecting to dominate and drive down the field on every single drive against a conference opponent?

+ I agree that the traffic jam doesn’t allow for duo to be deployed.
+ Agree that pulling IQ should be worked on, but that comes from practicing and using it in games against different looks.
+ I actually like this solution of the RPO game to the field side. Punish the defense for mugging the line. If you get them to back off just a bit, it can give our big boys a chance to Duo and move people.
One of you OL guys (@San Amaro Dr, @gogeta4, et al) gotta give me a lesson on how to spot and differentiate duo from inside zone in a mosh pit. I’m aware of the basics. I’m also aware you need a strong center and at least a solid enough TE or ‘wing’ to free up guys moving to the second level.

Just had this brought up today off the board, and while I have long said I know close to zip about OL other than whatever I overheard or watched from afar in a WingT, I’d love to tell based on the OL footwork or something.

I’ve seen duo run clean and clearly when they practice it and you see the OL working off the doubles and moving into the second level, but when I watch most of our current run plays, it looks like a straight up zone mess with LBs flying into the interior gaps.

As part of that convo, I mentioned how a dynamic guy like Cam, who could pull the ball or rip an RPO off a LB’s ear, changed the entire dynamic of its effectiveness. Simply by keeping defenders who would otherwise be in conflict from flying down. Carson has done that like 3x this year? I also don’t see the quick ins Horton received last year from Cam.

So, we get a mosh pit. How do you tell within that? What are we supposed to do about that if Carson doesn’t magically start pulling or throwing and opponents continue to send guys downhill?

Can someone please tell Mario that you don’t have to be in 5th gear gas pedal floored or in first gear Under the school speed limit. There are options in between
