Bengals being tight in the wallet is the primary reason for both of their holdouts.

Refusing to give Hendrickson more than 1 GTD year on his extension.

Stewart got an extra half a million upfront in the first portion of his signing bonus in return for adding the language in the contract. The same percentage was applied for the 2nd round pick for him to put the language in as well.

I’m not naive to believe there isn’t some form of that language in every contract.

I don’t think there would have been as big of a stink if it was a “normal” contract. There were multiple reports of his contract having new terms/clauses that were not in normal contracts.

Is it possible it was being overblown or over exaggerated? Sure, but I don’t think that’s the case. The more likely reason is Shemar is/was going to be the first test case for more restrictive language they want to put in everybody’s contracts going forward.

Its decades worth of evidence to support it, including multiple 1st round pick holdouts.

With the way the salary cap is going and GTD money being thrown around, i can easily see Mike Brown selling just because he isn't liquid enough to put that much money into escrow every year for contracts.

Good for Shemar and his agent. They made the Bengals pay an extra 500k in up front money for inserting the clause. And if the 2nd round pick received the money, then its only right for the 1st round pick to negotiate for the same money.

Whether we like sports agents or not, this is how they represent nothing other than their client’s best interest (and help themselves along the way).

His situation was basically Bengals wanting the same/similar language (but because its Bengals, probably even more Team-friendly) as like maybe 15+ teams (maybe more idk) already have for 1st rounders. So yeah i don't think it's really about there being that fine print per se. The problem is A) Bengals didn't have that language any previous years and are just now trying to insert it, meaning 1st rounder taken earlier by Bengals this year has an objectively worse contract due to its language than last years taken later (because bengals wanted everything else about their standard contract to be the same)... B) the other teams who added similar language in previous years offset that with like quicker/higher initial payments or other language to the players benefit. There was some give and take. The Bengals were just trying to take without doing any giving. In fact I'd 100% bet the Bengals standard contract already was probably one of the teams in the NFL that pushed payments latest they could be more than anyone...

So Imo it was entirely reasonable for Shemar to have not signed until he received some concessions from the Bengals to match what other players with similar language receive. HOWEVER where his fault entirely lies is the whole holding out of practice and not agreeing to the conditional contract all these rookies sign before their normal contract that allows them to come to camp and play...

The Bengals are one of the cheapest organizations in the NFL. Some other teams have worse facilities and stuff, but I don't think anyone nickels and dimes players like the Bengals do. And barely anyone is as stupid when it comes to the contract negotiations of their top players. Jerry Jones has been dumb as a box of rocks lately in this area too though, so they have competition I guess.

Brown hates paying his performers more than any owner in football.

Bengals saved $2million dollars in giving him this contract.

The 15th pick was slated to make 20.5mill with a 5th year option.

But basically, he'll be demanding a new deal in 2 years & will likely be traded or cut before the end of his rookie contract.

He reluctantly had to sell the naming rights of the stadium just to have enough money in escrow to give Joe Burrow an extension

True dat! I used to live there. That practice field is near the river next to a factory or some type of plant. They have to blow it up to make a temporary indoor if it’s inclement weather. The University of Cincinnati just built a indoor facility that’s better than the Bengals.

He didn’t sign with Miami. I consider that conduct detrimental to football (the football I care about).

To make matters worse, each team owner gets the same payout. The profit is broken up evenly among the 32 teams.

I think they got paid 450Ms this year. That's not even including appreciation or the tax benefits/breaks.

Why are you being so cheap as an owner?
