Shamar " Marty" Brown

We, and he, had some really big runs on the last drive that, had they gone differently, I don't know if we win that game. Remember how that last drive went:

- 9 yard pass to Daniels on 1st down, 2nd and 1 from the 34

- 4 yard run for Marty, picks up the first down to the 38, clock ticks under 3 minutes

- 15 yard pass interference on the deep ball to Marion, now we're in business at the ND 47 just outside the 2 minute warning

- Incomplete pass to Moore on 1st and 10, nice breakup by the ND DB, who probably should've been called for yet another pass interference but whatever

- 8 yard run on 2nd and 10 to the ND 39 by Marty Brown. This is the one. If we get stuffed here, it's 3rd and long and who knows how the game ends. But he gets 8 tough yards right up the middle, and now we go to the 2 minute warning with everything in the playbook at our disposal.

- Out of the 2 minute warning, we give it to Marty again, he gets 3 yards. I was watching the line judge this entire play, as he ran in from the boundary, the spot was short. Marty, and the whole line, continued to push, and I think we got a touch lucky as they were probably very close to blowing the whistle, but they let the play continue and it went from a 1 yard gain to a 3 yard gain, the line judge veered up the field about 2 yards as he ran in and the pile continued, first down. Now we can make them start taking their timeouts and push closer to a FG. Again, if we get stopped short, what does Mario do on 4th and 1 from the ND 38? We're not kicking a 55 yarder. Does he have the balls to go for it and potentially give ND the ball at their own 40 with a minute left?

Doesn't matter now, we got it done. But those 2 runs by Brown were HUGE, and kinda crazy the staff had him in the game at that point over Fletcher. Obviously the trust is massive. But without both those runs back to back, the game very well might have turned out differently.
Rewatching the game really emphasized the old adage, it's a game of inches. Crazy how a handful of plays for each team made such a difference, but by mere inches.

Brown was huge for us:

Last drive of 1st Half (TD) - All Brown
1st Drive of 2nd Half (TD) - Fletcher started it, Brown finished it
Last Drive (GW FG) - All Brown

Unpopular opinion - but Lyle's injury may have helped us, because it forced us to use Fletcher & Brown more (they look like better RB's to me)

It's pick your flavor with our RB's - but Brown looks like he has a case to be our best RB. Huge get!

First game from FCS against ND and the moment wasn’t too big for him. The mental make up of the roster feels legit.

I know my guy Bernard Shaw loved that big **** running between the keyhole of light the OL would give him.

When I saw your boy Lyle do the Texas Two Step at the line trying to find a hole...oh boy...

Didn't appreciate it watching live, but upon rewatch Lyle ran decisively (no dancing) before he tweaked his ankle. 2 nice inside runs, then #87 missed a block on the third.

We have 3 starter-level RBs who are good in different ways.

I was waiting for this thread. Very impressed with this kid’s game. I didn’t know much about him before the game but I do now. Can’t remember the last time a new running back gained my trust so quickly.

Brown catches the ball on those flare passes as well. Good hands and gets up field in a hurry.

Have to admit - I wasn't thrilled to see Lyle get the start.

In games decided by under 28 pts - Lyle is now 29 for 81 - 2.8 ypc.

I just don't think Lyle is the dynamic RB he's being billed as. I wouldn't call Brown dynamic either (I don't think any of our top 3 are) - but Brown's a no-nonsense straight ahead hammer. I'm happy we got him.

At this point, they trust Brown not to fumble more than they do Fletcher

I suspect the same. He's certainly a solid RB, but I think many here are extrapolating from that one really long one he had last year.

I don't think we have anyone close to an "elite" RB in the Edge/Portis/Gore/McGahee category. Probably not even the Lamar Miller range. But they are all pretty solid.

I like a mixture of both big power and quick agile
