Shalala is stepping down

The stupidity on this board is out of control. We knew she was waiting for the NBA mess to wrap up before retiring. Yeah, she doesn't care about football at all. Before Donna we were Suntan U. Now we have been ranked as high as 36th in the nation and are an established top tier university. What she has done for the endowment and facilities may never be matched. She has been a tremendous leader. She will be missed by those who really care about the university.

The artificial inflation of the US News Ranking is a joke. And we are still closer to Bama than Duke in said rankings. I don't understand this obsession with dramatically changing the U. Does it make you feel smarter and more successful bc they've raised the minimum SAT standard? It's pathetic really.

You are an FSU grad?

he spent four years there for possession of a narcotic

As others have pointed out, Suntan U became something more because of the football team and that cannot be disputed. It's still interesting hearing people talk about the academics here like they're out of this world. We're sixth in conference, but listening to people talk about it one would think only Duke was ranked higher.

Even our top programs, law school for instance, both rank behind FSU and UF respectively. The med school ranks behind UF in research and behind UF, FSU, and UCF in primary care. There's still a lot of work to be done to act like things are world class as neither ranks top 50 in the country.

Overall, the schools ranking is good, but not elite. The other odd thing is that hardly anyone besides a Miami grad or fan has a clue it's a small private university. Pretty much everyone I've ever talked to about the school thinks we're just another state school like UF, FSU, etc.

Bottom line, there's no reason you can't be exceptional in both academics and athletics. Shalala raised the academics side, but under her watch the athletic side took a nose dive. Let's just not overstate the academic side and fix the athletic side. I hope they find someone who can figure out both.

I'd like to hear how shalala was against football or athletics or how she hindered the FB program.

Dudes might be mistaking bad hiring decisions with not caring. She looked like she cared a lot when she meets with recruits, attends games, and fought the ncaa like an animal.

Next president could be a Tad Foote stuffed shirt nerd, and we'll be crying a river again.

I love Miami football. I will not miss Donna. Hopefully the next president does a better job hiring coaches and puts the money the program earns back into it.
Donna's football legacy.

Folks who swoon over how much the hobbit lady did for UM academics seem to overlook the fact that no university president can do more to advance their educational goals than themselves.

That said, Ms Shalala seem to me to enjoy attending athletic events and it's on her watch that facilities were upgraded.

#bring back our old icons

Shalala became pres in 2001. The football victory fund and new Schwartz center didn't come to life until two seasons ago. 2001-2012 is over ten years of neglect.

Actuallythe Schwartz Center was announced in 2010. She addressed immediate needs first and has raised over 3 billion dollars in Momentum One and Two. From the write up on her announcement:

President Shalala’s presidency has seen an unprecedented growth in facilities totaling almost $2 billion of new construction and comprising 2.7 million square feet of projects completed or in process, plus 1.7 million of existing square feet renovated. Major projects on the Coral Gables campus include the BankUnited Center, Student Activities Center, University Village student housing, the Schwartz Center for Athletic Excellence, and the Newman Alumni Center among others. Additions to the Miller School of Medicine campus include the Clinical Research Building, University of Miami Hospital, Biomedical Research Building, and UM Life Science and Technology Park. Next month the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science will dedicate the Alfred C. Glassell, Jr. SUSTAIN Building and Marine Technology & Life Sciences Seawater Complex.

As an alumni I want to thank Shalala for everything she has done to improving the school it what is most important, academics. I can only hope that the next president does not turn us into FSU which only cares about athletics, or worse an a university who sucks at athletics and academics

As an alumni of SUN TAN U, drop dead! The football team gave our diplomas exponential value. Before Howard, you told people you went to Miami and they said, "oh." After JJ they said "No s..t, you went to THE U!!!!! ****." Donna did not do that. A bunch of kids sweating and working hard did it. We owe our reputation to those players not her. The growth of the school came from football. The fame came from football. And all the money she raised came because of football. She did not make THE U some academic oasis. JJ graduated somewhere near 70% of his players when St Bobby was doing under 20%. And remember, our football HC turned the little scum bucket away while you wonder women smiled and took his illegal money. She should have been canned by NCAA for her involvement in the second biggest scandal in college history--just like the PSU dude.

Some players accepting a few hundred dollars each and some meals is the second biggest scandal in college history??? Are you serious? Ever hear of SMU? UNC academic scandal? ****, Miami's very own Pell Grant scandal was much worse than Shapiro-gate.

What a ridiculous statement, along with the whole claim she knew it was illegal money.

The next President of UM will have huge shoes to fill. President Shalala elevated UM to new heights in many fields and stood up to the NCAA. I wish the athletic programs had been better for the last decade of her tenure, but her tenure was a huge success by almost every metric.

the football team sunk deeper and deeper into the ground since the first year she arrived

And, unfortunately, that's the criteria that the dumb, motherfugging 15% will judge her by.
LULZ at working in a Lee Elia line. Pure genius!

BREAKING: MESSAGE BOARD POSTERS CELEBRATE THE NEWS THAT A PRESIDENT OF A UNIVERSITY THEY NEVER ATTENDED IS RETIRING

I did attend and paid hard $$$$ for every single credit hour. I could not be any happier about here leaving. She should have been fired in disgrace for her hand in the ncaa scandal--note her hand was actually in it. The only bad news is any retirement she takes with her.

Utterly stupid to place blame on Shalala for the NCAA mess. Beyond ignorant.

I would like us to get someone that wants to take this program to the next level.

We need to adapt the new landscape of college football or get used to the mediocrity.

Has UM ever had any president that cared about athletics? We would win in spite of the president.

I don't think a new president is gonna change athletics. The biggest positive i see out of this is the new president would have no reason to keep Al Golden. Shalala was infatuated with Golden and it would of taken a whole lot worse than what he's doing now to get fired. Especially the way he exaggerates positives, no matter how small they may be.

There's also the fact that while she may have been considered a "fan" or friend of the program, her ineptitude coupled with the BOT led to three failed hiring's in succession. 2 questionable (timing and/or length) extensions being case in point. Being good for the university & good for the program don't have to be mutually exclusive.

yes.. lets hire a president of a top 50 school based on their football program outlook.

please don't come here and make fund of the FSU education system and request a president that puts football program as #1 priority
