Shalala is stepping down

the football program took miami to a new level as a university. i know a ton of kids from north east who went to miami. they werent doing that before the 1980s

That is commonly known, ironically, as the "Flutie Effect." There is no doubt that the exposure of the school increased dramatically during those years and the applications increased as a result of it. With the increase in applications, the school became more selective and the prestige of the school rose. But make no mistake, President Shalala's desire to have a world class medical school and hospitals was also a factor in raising the profile of the school and the prestige of a degree from UM.

miami also has a very good law school

UM has an excellent law school, and the addition of the late Supreme Court Justice William Brennan to the law school faculty in the early 1990s added to the prestige of the law school and was a great move. UM has some incredibly bright people making strategic decisions. Unfortunately, UM has hired one mediocre and two atrocicious football coaches since hiring Butch, and we are seeing the fruit of those horrific hires.

they might make an internal hire. I can't see an SEC person because SEC has literally no academic requirements

Vanderbilt says "hello."

and ACC has Boston College, Norte Dame (basically an ACC school) duke, wake forest, UNC, etc. there is no comparison between the conferences as far as academics.

unc's academics for athletes were literally non-existant for a very long time.

Academics and athletics are not mutually exclusive. USC is a great school and has had success in athletics. UCLA has too. Duke and UNC have great basketball programs. for a private school like miami, u need the football revenue.

Just to correct the record, Shalala did not hire Coker. If I can put one thing on her it was allowing Randy Shannon to be hired. Overall I'd give her a solid B for Athletics. It would be an A if she hadn't allowed that.

3, a "B" grade and an "A" without Shannon? What justifies either of those grades in your mind?

Regarding athletics, she'd at best get a high D from me. She deserves a straight "F" for the contract extension given to Al. To those saying it benefits us if we need to go a different direction, how would that be the case when his original contract was for five years and we're in year four? A guy with six years versus one left on his contract, I know who has the bigger buyout every single time in that scenario. Oh, he was going to move on, well **** him, go on as we don't extend contracts to people who haven't proven anything yet. I'm sure there was a buyout for another school to pay us if someone really wanted him, so see ya....we'll use that to pay off Shannon and the new HC.

Shannon was a bad hire all around. I said it then, you don't hire a member of a failed staff. The first time HC didn't bother me as much as that. Here comes the kicker again though.... they extended this guy prematurely as well. Scratch the it worked out to our advantage, nope, we paid him after he was terminated. Oh, we needed to extend him for recruiting, please....some of the dumbest stuff I've ever read on a message board.

Toss in rehiring a guy who sued the university, you've got the cherry on top. If those three things don't make one wonder who is making these decisions and whether they should be, I don't know what would.

Medical Degrees maybe, by THE U had a top notch medical school long before Donna as well as law and oceanography. She built on something that was there. You take away the football program before Howard wins that NC, any Donna never even takes the job. Football made Miami "THE U".

You wrote that the SEC has "literally no academic requirements." I pointed out that you were wrong as Vanderbilt is one of the top schools in the country. What do the academic requirements of BC, ND, WFU, Duke and UNC have to do with Vanderbilt's standards and you being wrong in this regard?

As an alumni I want to thank Shalala for everything she has done to improving the school it what is most important, academics. I can only hope that the next president does not turn us into FSU which only cares about athletics, or worse an a university who sucks at athletics and academics

As an alumni of SUN TAN U, drop dead! The football team gave our diplomas exponential value. Before Howard, you told people you went to Miami and they said, "oh." After JJ they said "No s..t, you went to THE U!!!!! ****." Donna did not do that. A bunch of kids sweating and working hard did it. We owe our reputation to those players not her. The growth of the school came from football. The fame came from football. And all the money she raised came because of football. She did not make THE U some academic oasis. JJ graduated somewhere near 70% of his players when St Bobby was doing under 20%. And remember, our football HC turned the little scum bucket away while you wonder women smiled and took his illegal money. She should have been canned by NCAA for her involvement in the second biggest scandal in college history--just like the PSU dude.

dumbest statement in a thread of dumb statements. yeah, the president of the university knew that the guy was just short of a billion dollars in his ponzi scheme before the sec and fbi knew about it. get the **** out of here.

Randy knew. Not a very high a bar for Donna to clear. Remember the smile on her face? Greed and pride make people stupid.

i can not stand some of our fans.

before you comments on the job the president of a university has done, stop listening to the Lukes of this fan base and start doing some research.

we are NOT Alabama, if you want the entire school admin to be focused around the football program go cheer for Ohio State, LCU, Alabama & FSU..

Foot... the president when UM had the best team in college football history .. .he wanted to shut down the football program!

Our football program is a small part of our entire school system and it will NEVER be how it is in Alabama or FSU. We are a small privet school and the only reason we are able to have a good team in the past is because of the talent around the city.

Any president that steps foot on this campus will be hired by the trustees to better the university not the football program & if you can't comprehends that you should not be commenting on this subject.

Shalala has brought in more money for this school then anyone in history of this program and that has helped this football program. If you want to fire Golden, or you want to hire a better coach.. that will cost you a pretty penny.. and guess what!? your not going to pay for it.. the school is.

Either way.. the program with our program is NOT the president of the university (i still can't believe I have to type that because some of you believe everything Luke tweets) its with our staff, and you don't make decisions like this after 2 games! you wait out at the VERY least half way through the season.

Shalala put this program milestones ahead of every other school in the state..she raised billions! (yes with a b) and she does not hire or fire the coach...there is a long chain this goes through and even if she wants to fire him, the trustees have to approve it..

Three things:

1. President and their Job

I get what you're saying about the President and their job. I think she was an incredible President for the school minus football and baseball. Since this is a sports message board, this will be what most focus on.

My problem is that she was WAY TOO hands on (hiring/firing) for someone who knows nothing about the issues involved (bringing in proper coaches). She could have instead, hired a AD who was ACTUALLY in charge of the Athletic Department and free to make decisions without the President's 2 Cents. Instead she is a bit of a micro-manager.

So Shalala was excellent for the SCHOOL as a WHOLE but not so much for sports. Who cares at this point, she is done and we're moving on. There is no need to continue the amount of impact she has had on athletics because she is STEPPING DOWN. It is irrelevant at this point.

2. Good football v. Good Academics.... OH NO, SMALL PRIVATE SCHOOLS!!!!

There is/are a lot of grey area here.

It is not ONE (good football school) or the OTHER (good academics).

It is only ONE or the OTHER if you completely shut down one and focus on the other.

There is Stanford with 7000 undergrad students who is not in AS a fertile recruiting area and for a long time was getting 4th/5th tier talent in California. Then they made an excellent hire (Harbaugh) and things changed. They made a second good hire (Shaw) and things continued at that level. Stanford is 47-9 since 2010, they have been to 4 straight BCS games and won 2.

It's funny because even a program like Duke (6500 undergrad) was able to win the Coastal before we ever did.

Then there was Miami, who made 3 poor terrible coaching decisions in a row. Small private schools can have success but they need to make the right coaching decisions. Considering we're 0 for 3 over the last X Years...what do you expect?

As for the past, (local talent) that isn't the sole reason Miami became a Success.

Starts with Coaching...

A. Snelly went on to coach in the Pros (USFL) after Miami

B. JJ went on to coach in the Pros after Miami

C. Erickson went on to coach in the Pros after Miami

D. Butch went on to coach in the Pros after Miami

What you have is 4 for 4 coaches moving on to bigger gigs...PRO GIGS.

Perhaps this coaching thing can overcome a lot.

3. Judging Al after "2 Games."

It isn't 2 games...It is 3 seasons and 2 games. So we have almost 40 games to judge him by at this point.

23-16 (13-12)

What indication will he turn it around at this point? Do you think a guy who is 52% during conference play is going to beat FSU (0-3 during his tenure) and VT (1-2 during his tenure) this season?

(to the board not the poster)

I think many of you just have low expectations at this point. Almost as if we could never have success again. Well it starts with bringing in the right guy. Bring in the wrong guy (Coker, RS and Al) and you will continue this trend.

randy knew that he was a shady and a bag man, not that he was a ponzi schemer. the guy popped up with a $50,000 check at a fundraiser. do you expect her to say no and scrunch her face?

few other things that randy knew:
- recruiting miami central is a bad idea.
- lamarcus joyner was too small, therefore would never be a productive player past high school.
- burning your timeouts before the 8:00 mark in the 3rd quarter is a legitimate strategy.

I agree that some of the comments regarding Shalala are a bit childish and the reaction is a bit uncalled for, as she did do a lot of good for the University. But coming to a Miami Hurricanes football board and getting upset because people want what's best for the Miami Hurricanes football team is about as dumb as still supporting Al Golden.

without making this in to a huge thread i'll address this quickly

1. President and their Job

presidents job is the school as a whole.. and the school is a "SCHOOL/UNIVERSITY" first before a football program. UM is doing some incredible work on cancer research that 90% of our fan base has no clue about. our marine research department is bringing in world class scientist for sea level rise research. So as much as football program is important to our "brand", shalala gave UM a great deal of academic credibility and was able to raise billions in research money for the school... again keep this in mind.. this ia a University of a pro football team.

2. Good football v. Good Academics.... OH NO, SMALL PRIVATE SCHOOLS!!!!
you actually proved my point...we are a small privet school and our fan base is small.. if our athletic programs brought in Alabama or Texas type of money we could and would keep those NFL caliber coaches but we are not.. we are a small school... our athletic program makes peanuts compared to some of these bigger schools.

and this ties in to the last point

the problem is not form Shalala, its our coaching staff and approach to todays game.

don't expect a president to step in and magically the football program is winning NC again

and you DO NOT take money from tuition and research funds and put it towards a head coach! you use the money that the athletic department brings in to do this.. and that is WHY being a small privet school with a small fan base compared to other schools effects us with affording a better coach.

University of Miami says Donna Shalala "plans to return to the faculty as a professor of political science and health policy."

Hmmmmm
Likely won't happen. She is positioning herself for Clinton's run for office.

She already was a professor.

I took her class on the US Healthcare System in undergrad.
Oh, I knew she taught class already because she was teaching when I was there. What I meant is that, in the larger picture, she is likely stepping down in order to be in a better position to answer a call from Clinton when the time comes -- in which case she would relinquish her position as a professor. She just can't flat out say that for obvious reasons.

Sorry I wasn't more clear.

The stupidity on this board is out of control. We knew she was waiting for the NBA mess to wrap up before retiring. Yeah, she doesn't care about football at all. Before Donna we were Suntan U. Now we have been ranked as high as 36th in the nation and are an established top tier university. What she has done for the endowment and facilities may never be matched. She has been a tremendous leader. She will be missed by those who really care about the university.

The artificial inflation of the US News Ranking is a joke. And we are still closer to Bama than Duke in said rankings. I don't understand this obsession with dramatically changing the U. Does it make you feel smarter and more successful bc they've raised the minimum SAT standard? It's pathetic really.

You are an FSU grad?

Wow. Just woke up and saw the news. Mixed feelings about this one. Sports-wise it's probably for the better. Academics wise there probably won't be much different. Time for a new era in all things UM.
