Serious Question (Football Only)

Uh no (see below). This is why we need a competent and passionate AD with autonomy.

James, who also interviewed Dan Mullen, Butch Davis, Greg Schiano and interim coach Larry Scott, enlisted the help of search firm Korn Ferry (which at one point gave him a list of 40 names, including several NFL offensive coordinators) and counseled with a six-person committee that included two trustees (David Epstein and Steve Saiontz), a Miami lawyer (Hilarie Bass), UM’s football administrator (Jenn Strawley) and two former players (Jonathan Vilma and Vinny Testaverde).

Testaverde, Richt’s former teammate (they once sat in the same quarterbacks meeting room at UM with Jim Kelly and Bernie Kosar) said “it’s hard to believe” that Georgia let Richt go.

“All I can say is that their loss is our gain,” Testaverde said. “Selfishly, I am glad they did it. The reasons why they did it I don’t know, and frankly at this point, it really doesn’t matter and I don’t care.”

Neither Vilma nor Testaverde shared in great detail the committee’s process, but said James was the key figure. “Basically it was everybody gives their opinions and really I think at the end of the day, Blake James is the one that made the call,” Testaverde said.

Perhaps I was not clear enough.....
1. To my point Korn Ferry is used as a political scapegoat, big mistake, clearly they will provide you with a list of NATIONAL potential candidates...easy......but they have no knowledge of the local Miami culture and idiosyncrasies...the candidate needs to fit in..no the other way around.

2. Look at the composition of the committee...ex Canes in the minority, token representation, and "Blake James is the one that made the call"! Not exactly what I proposed.

All of the above are reasons to NOT do anything close to what you suggested. Anyone (ex-canes included) who signed off on this hire should be automatically disqualified from the process.

Do you not understand this?

With the right AD, none of this bullchit is necessary.

Don't ever put Testaverde on any committee that has any real responsibility. What a dumb statement.

Do other schools have committees like us or do they just have the AD do his job and drive the process?

I am sure there is no set standard.

1. At some schools the AD makes the decision, as long as the AD acts within reason*. They're in charge of athletics. They may need a rubber stamp but that is what you pay them to do.
2. At some schools multiple parties are involved.

*Obviously if the AD offers Sean Payton a 10 year contract at $25MM/year (fully guaranteed), that wouldn't be within reason.
