Serious Butch Davis Questions

He wanted to coach ... We had an opening ... Why wasn't he considered?

Wrong...Butch got hired at UNC before Coker got fired.

Butch: On November 13, 2006, University of North Carolina athletic director **** Baddour announced that Davis had been hired as the school's new head football coach. On November 27, 2006, Davis officially succeeded John Bunting, who was fired in October 2006 after posting one winning season in the previous six seasons as head coach of the Tar Heels. Davis took over a program that had seen three winning seasons in the past eight years and had won more than six games in a season two other times.

Coker: Miami defeated a ranked Boston College team on Thanksgiving to finish the regular season 6–6. Revealing an apparent lack of communication between Coker and UM President Donna Shalala, Coker predicted after the victory that he would be back as head coach in 2007. The following day, however, Coker was fired.

Coker was fired Friday, a move that was expected for weeks and came one day after the Miami Hurricanes finished a 6-6 regular season by beating Boston College, snapping a four-game losing streak and becoming bowl-eligible.

You may also want to read the links in my OP ... UNC knew Butch was on the market.

Highly unlikely Miami didn't know, too ...

It's also highly unlikely they could've afforded Butch...Butch was making close to $2M at UNC...I don't even think Shannon's contract approached $1M.

And I know, I know, you wanna give UM credit for something, but they've been phuckin' up since they cheapskated Butch outta UM.

And hate to break it to ya', but uhhhhhhhh, Lame ain't comin'.

Butch was interested in the Miami job. Butch's agent sent out feelers to UM in '06. However, Miami & Dee had no interest in Davis because of his departure to the Browns in '01. So Davis took the UNC job.

OP, what's your point?

OP, what's your point?

Wasn't really looking for a debate ... I really wanted the questions answered.

If the answer is, "Paul Dee was in charge of that search, and he was still mad at Butch" ... Then I get it. And because Paul Dee is no longer around, that issue is gone, I can accept that.

But if the answer is, "board members were mad at Butch, and they controlled the search" ... Then, I don't see that situation being any different after Golden is gone. Butch would still have issues with board members ...

Again, wasn't looking to debate. But guys throwing out "Shalala didn't like Butch" makes no sense. Had we hired Alvarez, then maybe I could buy it. But we hired Randy Shannon ... There is no way she made that call, IMO.

Butch is home today sifting thru all the offers he has had in 5 years..

Butch essentially is banned from college football, which is why he has zero offers. There is simply no way that he is coaching here again. This is NOT an anti Butch message, its just reality. Expecting BD to be named our next head coach is similar to believing in Santa Claus.

I agree...he is not banned BTW he just ****ed up very badly at UNC , great guy but I don't have a short memory on what he did to us on how he left and why he left

She wouldn't.

Butch as that Southern drawl, spending lots of formative time in Oklahoma and Arkansas. I don't know WTF Shalala was, but whatever she was, she was some kind of ***ed up.

She wanted Alvarez - but someone must have vetoed that. ****ed her off, and at that moment she was determined to destroy UM football.

As much as we all want butch back. I give it about a 1% chance of happening. I dont trush the people that hired coker, shannon, and golden.

I continue to see the posts commenting that Butch is the same age as Saban and Pete Carroll, and that he's younger than Bill Snyder.

I get all of that ...

But Saban and Carroll have not been out of football for the past 5 year. And Snyder never left the KSU program, though he stopped being their head coach.

... My 1st serious question is this:

Does anyone know why Butch Davis wasn't hired to replace Coker?

Based on the attached links, Butch chose to go to UNC BEFORE we hired Shannon ...

North Carolina names Butch Davis new head coach

Defensive coordinator Shannon new Miami coach

This link also suggests Coker getting fired was known before Butch took the UNC job, as well ...

Larry Coker Fired as Miami Hurricanes' Head Coach | Fox News

Coker was fired Friday, a move that was expected for weeks and came one day after the Miami Hurricanes finished a 6-6 regular season by beating Boston College, snapping a four-game losing streak and becoming bowl-eligible.

There are plenty of potential candidates to replace Coker, including former Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez, who is close with Miami president Donna Shalala; Rutgers coach and former Miami assistant Greg Schiano; and Tulsa coach Steve Kragthorpe.

Former Florida coach and current South Carolina boss Steve Spurrier said earlier this week that he expects to be back with the Gamecocks next fall for his third season — trying to rebuke a story that identified him as Miami's top choice for the job.

The school will hire a consultant and begin a search immediately, Dee said, adding that current Miami defensive coordinator Randy Shannon could be among those considered for the job.

The above quotes suggest Butch Davis wasn't even up for consideration to replace Coker ...

Does anybody know why, considering he clearly wanted to be back in college coaching?

And my 2nd serious question is what has changed since then to make people think Butch would/should be considered now?

I'll take a crack at these since they're fair, balanced questions.

My best guess to your first question is there was probably still a lot of sour grapes over how Butch left the school back in 2001. Everybody thinking that the deal was a signature away from done and the next thing the school knew Butch was up in Cleveland. I would think feelings were still pretty hurt at the point where they weren't going to give Butch the time of day. This includes both Paul Dee and the Board.

To your second question, I can only parrot what I heard at school and what LuCane has said. Paul Dee has left the school and he had the largest of reasons to hate Butch. James is a fan of Butch. But above all else, the Board has younger members now who really like Butch and connect him to the last time we were great. In addition to that, there are older established Board members who adore him. On that same token, some Board members absolutely hate his guts and that'll of course be an issue.

Ultimately, I'm pretty vocal that I want Butch back. But all that's been said all along is that he is an option. He's not a certainty. He's not without a doubt pick. But he is a real, viable option and I think the biggest reason for that is the desperation of the program.

What He did was go 51-20 under the worst sanctions in UM's history...left a 12-1 team...subsequently a NC & NC contending team...and talent as far as the eye can see. Nobody cares what He did to you, fuq yo' feelings.

NOT THIS SCHIT YET AGAIN, AGAIN, AGAIN!

Countless threads on this. Look one up!

It's the same clown starting all of them. This moron wants Miami to hire a MAC coach.

I'm convinced he and NVA Cane are either gator trolls or they are 12.

nva cane is legit....what are you talking about? are you sure you're not getting him confused w/ nycane?

Sark is done at USC.
Spurrier is retiring from the other USC.
Edsal is out at MD.
What other P5 programs will be looking for a HC other than us?

Not throwing shade ... Asking a legit question.

If the school was so bothered by the way he left in 2001 that they chose to hire Randy Shannon over him, what has changed in the past decade to make anyone think he's a legit option, now?

They actually allowed him to go to UNC BEFORE hiring Shannon ...

Or, did he choose to go to UNC over coming back to Miami?

... Are folks at UM still mad about 2001, or are folks mad about 2006?

LMFAO! @
The school will hire a consultant and begin a search immediately, Dee said, adding that current Miami defensive coordinator Randy Shannon could be among those considered for the job.

Yeah, the same consultant we paid $50K to hire an in-house guy (Shannon), who eventually got fired...is the same consultant we paid $50K to hire the phuckin' Temple coach, who'll eventually get fired.

But OP wanna throw shade at Butch.

The schools arrogance has changed. 10 years ago, this school felt they could place any coach and be the U again, because we had been successful for so long. Now they may be desperate (notice I said may be) and Butch fits everything we need. The fanbase would be settled, the cost would be relatively cheap, the resume is there, and the timing is right.
