Semi ot: James Franklin signs psu extension

@Brooklyndee mentioned Mario numbers in another thread and ****.. if Tucker and now Franklin are resigning for contracts like THIS, we might wanna go ahead and give Mario what he's asking for before the market gets waaaaay outta hand.
We are going to have to pay if we want to be relevant in the big boy football world.

Otherwise, just G5 us now and save us all the time & emotions.

This is exactly why you need a competent AD.

Jurich me!!

Yep. Lots of people saying "this guy" or "that guy" isn't WORTH a particular salary.

Doesn't matter. The market sets salary. And the market is GOOD right now...

Time to re-bump my "Give Mario $10 million" thread from September.
Yup. It’s like the housing market. It’s worth what someone is willing to pay.

11-9 the last two seasons gets a coach 10 and $75 million.

Buyout terms are even more insane. It barely protects PSU from him leaving on his own (at most $12M, drops to $9M in April 2022), but if they want to get rid of him, they owe him the world: full salary x # of years left.

So if he ***** the bed the next two years and they want to fire him, they'd owe him nearly $60M

Pure insanity considering PSU is one of Fickell's preferred destinations. The AD and BoT that approved this deal need to sued for financial malpractice

Yeah, the market is overheated right now.

Plus, those were RETENTION deals. If you think about it from a purely mathematical viewpoint, it makes perfect sense if you don't have to pay someone else's buyout (with the gross-up for income tax added in for good measure).

Sure, Ped State could hire Stoops away from Kentucky...if they write a check for $30 million (grossed-up buyout). Might as well just give that money to Franklin and keep the recruiting class together.

Cheaper to keep her...or him...or whatever the pronouns are...

At least the housing market has appraisers to try to inject some semblance of reality and value. These ******* coaching contracts have no similar fair market valuation mechanism.

Driving up that Mario & Lane price 🤦🏼‍♂️
My estimation is Oregon will have to give Mario a big extension & bump his pay up to $7.5-8mill in order to keep him.

Right now, he’s making $4.75mill per after his most recent contract extension activated after he met the incentive mark of 9 wins this year, so if Oregon wants to keep him Phil Knight has to give him an extension doubling his salary at about something like 8 years $60mill at $7.5mill per.

Everything will depend on how bad Oregon wants to keep him & how much Miami is wiling to pay to get him.

If I’m Oregon, I ain’t paying that much for Mario, especially if offensive guys like Chip Kelly, Kalen DeBoer & Tyson Helton are all available for much much cheaper.

What’s the sense in paying all that money to still lose to Utah & Stanford every year if you can do that at half the price lol

Phil Knight still has money because he doesn't waste money.

He **** well knows that he can promote the OC for the fifth time at a fraction of the price.

Man this easily going to put Mario in the $40 million contract range if it has a 5-year term. **** has escalated quickly

It’s fact though.

If you’re going to be paying a coach upwards of 7-8 million a year, you better be a perennial playoff contender, otherwise you can pay $5mill & below for pretty much similar results.

Oregon isn’t as desperate as Miami is, so in their situation it doesn’t make sense to pay that much to not make the playoffs, especially if you’ve actually made the playoffs before with Helfrich at a much cheaper price.

Paying that much for Mario is basically just paying for his recruiting, recruiting at Oregon is overrated, you can win there without having to stock up on top 5-10 classes. The Pac-12 is the weakest P5 conference, all you really need is a couple top 15-20 classes, a good offensive coach & a good QB & you’re almost guaranteed to win 10/11 games.

As long as USC & Washington remain in rebuilding mode, the Oregon job is probably one of the easiest P5 jobs in the nation. As long as you’re competent & can field a halfway decent team you’ll win there.

College coaching market is out of control.

Isn’t it all about the buyout though? $8M after 12/2022 seems like chump change if somebody really wants him or Penn State needs to get rid of him. The rest is just the market rate at this point. What am I missing here?
