Ryan Fines

Ryan fines could do big things with a few more years coach k

I'm the biggest Kool advocate you'll find but I think we are forgetting that you have to have some inherent talent to start with. Fines played on a HEAVILY recruited high school team at the most valued recruiting position and we were his only offer. Might just be a bad take.

We were not his only offer, ESPN 2015 recruiting ratings have Stanford,Nebraska,Northwestern and Arizona all offering Fines. Must be a smart kid with those offers.

Richard Mercier actually came to UM as a DT.

He may have played DT and oline in HS in Canada at Vanier, but Mercier, on signing day was listed as an oline...and started as a true freshman in the oline

Well...back in those days practices were open to the public and the first few days he was with the DL.
I remember him playing DT in drills right in front of me. He wa moved to OL a few days after fall camp started.

Fair enough

**** no. We mightve initially switched him. But he was a well regarded ol out of Canada when we found him

"1995 (FRESHMAN): Earned varsity letter starting in 10 of 11 contests at right guard...stepped in without any game experience for an injured Ricky Perry at right guard and performed at a high level the entire season...strong run blocking helped pave way for Danyell Ferguson’s 1,069 yards...started classes at UM in January 1995...participated in spring practice as a defensive tackle the first two weeks and a second-team left offensive guard the last two.

HIGH SCHOOL: Vanier College...an All-League and two-time All-Provincial selection...rated one of Canada’s top ten tacklers...had eight quarterback sacks in eight games from an inside position...ranked No. 2 in Canada by All-Star Recruiting...selected to the 1993 Provincial Quebec All-Star Team which won the Canada Cup...named captain of the 1994 Provincial All-Star Team...chosen Athlete of the Week after bowl game with four sacks and 15 tackles...solid academic student...a member of the Quebec Elite Mogul Ski Team...ranked fifth nationally at the Canadian Junior Mogul Ski Championships held at Banff, Alberta...coached by Mike "

Funny high school just mentions defense...spent his first two weeks on defense...but then again you are the same person that kept insisting Stoutland had a show cause.

I would like to see Fines get a look on the interior offensive line this season.

On paper, he's not a great fit with Diaz's defense and he has some talented guys in front of him. However, he would be a solid athlete by offensive line standards, and he has certain traits (strong legs, powerful hands) which translate well.

I thought for sure he had played O-line as well, but that's easy to do as good as Mercier was here for us.

Gotta remember something about that time at UM. MASSIVE probation was hitting, and our O-line was a FAR bigger mess then than it is now. Butch was fortunate the kid was just a good player that easily made the transition to O-line. He was the heart and soul of that line the whole time he was here, and was one of the biggest building blocks Butch Davis ever had on that rebuilding Miami team. It's easy to think he must have played O-line as good as he was here.

Man, I had forgotten how bad that line was in the mid-90s. People remember all the star players Butch recruited, but what he did to that O-line was nothing short of miraculous.

Can't make chicken salad out of...

Well, you know.

Yeah, imagine moving a tight end to a position like DT. Ha! Like that would ever work out! I mean look at Warren Sapp. How did that F'kn work out....oh ****, wait, what?

What a dumb ***'n comparison. LOL

No, it isn't. Yes, Warren had the physical talent to excel, but who's to say that Fines wouldn't become a serviceable OG at the college level? He's a RS Fr. With goodcoaching, who the **** knows what he will look like in 2 or 3 years?
