Rumph to UM

Interesting hire. Not a huge fan of the move, but oh well. Let's hope Richt made the right move.

U dont even know what position he was hired as but your not a fan? GTFOH

If it was for DB....which only makes sense then I absolutely am not a fan of the move. How has hiring high school coaches worked for us in the past? It's a gamble, hope it pays off, but I would have felt more comfortable with an experienced college DB coach.

Rumph is a rising star in the profession. I don't know if you can compare him to Beard or Hurley.

With all do respect, Ice was "a rising star" as well.

Ice is like 20 years older than Rumph

Like the hire. What is left now to hire then? Te, lb and another co-oc? I am assuming scott will probably be te coach

Has to be support staff. Would be a horrible DB hire. Sony continues to pay dividends to Rumph.

I'm not a fan of these former players jumping right to UM as position coaches. They need to cut their teeth elsewhere (like FAU or FIU) and earn their way to big time college ball. Rumph as DB coach is a weak hire and we should all be disappointed.

Who said he is the db coach?

I'm told that Mike Rumph will coach cornerbacks at Miami #Canes . He was a starter on Miami's '01 team

Basically sounds like what Kareem Brown was doing

This move better get us those heritage kids, we better see burns make a OV here, and we better get the stud O-lineman and RB they have, with marco wilson

HC - M Richt
QB - J Richt
RB - Brown
TE - ?
WR - ?
OL - Searels
DL - Kuligowski
DC/LB - Diaz
ST/Safeties - Hartley
CB - Rumph

Scott at TE
Beard at WR

and call it a day

Good mix of very experienced coaches, and former SoFla Miami guys with connections who also have good coaching potential

Like this staff alot

I'm pretty sure Kareem Brown was a GA and didn't count against the coach limit.

Either way, it will be Rumph and Hartley coaching DB's. Better than Paul Williams but still disappointing.

I think he did this past year. He was the outside linebacker coach for miamj

Kids respect a guy that have played the game (especially his position) at a high level. This guy starred at UM, was a high draft pick, he played for a long time in the NFL(Corner and Safety), and he's been coaching HS for a while. A man with those credentials has instant credibility with players and recruits. When you played the game at a high level for a long time, teaching technique is easy - it's **** near second nature. Rumph will be fine.

He obviously showed enough competence in his interview to earn the position. If Richt were a new HC without much experience I'd be concerned, but I have no concerns if a guy that's been a HC for 15 years at a power 5 school hires a guy like Rumph.

HS coaches make a successful jump to college all the time. Ty Detmer was just hired as OC for BYU and he was a high school coach in Austin TX last year.

Not sure why people are TOTALLY against this. If you are the head coach of a big time HS program, the next stop IS NOT for you to become a grad assistant somewhere. It is a position coach position at a university. People keep saying he should "cut his teeth at FAU/FIU or some lower tier school"...Says who? You? Message board guru? LOL. Okay. Thanks for the input.

Give the kid a shot. He will be surrounded by a VERY seasoned staff on the defensive side. And ****, maybe for once we can reap the benefits of having a local, young guy on staff and get some big time recruits in here.

Like someone said, this guy played at a high level here, was in the NFL, has coached at a VERY high level in HS (head coach of a state championship team) and now he is potentially getting a chance of a lifetime.

Lets see what he does with it..

So this must mean Hartley will probably coach the safety position to go along with special teams coordinators. Also if you go by Todd Hartley recent follows Larry Scott is at the top of the list so it could be safe to assume he is back although it hasn't been announced yet

He could also be a GA and coach corners

When some other team hires a HS coach, this board thinks its a genius move (see Telly Lockette). We do it and a guy like Mike Rumph doesn't know a thing about the CB position.

Someone quoted Chad Morris in this thread, I can't find it.

Chad Morris coached in HS as a HC from 1994-2009. Then he went to Tulsa.

Does anyone see a difference?
