Rumph to UM

Interesting hire. Not a huge fan of the move, but oh well. Let's hope Richt made the right move.

U dont even know what position he was hired as but your not a fan? GTFOH

If it was for DB....which only makes sense then I absolutely am not a fan of the move. How has hiring high school coaches worked for us in the past? It's a gamble, hope it pays off, but I would have felt more comfortable with an experienced college DB coach.

Rumph is a rising star in the profession. I don't know if you can compare him to Beard or Hurley.

With all do respect, Ice was "a rising star" as well.

Ice is about 50 years old and Mike is about 35. As far as rising star goes. But i've never witnessed either one of their coaching techniques.

So we hire a DC who cant stop the pass at all, and have his CB coach come from HS? This is shaping up to be a complete let down.

#ShouldaHiredHerman

herman was my first choice but it was never in the cards after they gave him the huge raise. i live in houston and it's pretty clear from chatter down here that he wants to see if the texas job opens up.

So 100% this leads to success?

GTK if true.

What leads to 100% success? We've seen coaches with sterling résumés fall on their faces.

Rumph's NFL experience coupled with high-level high school success leads me to believe he can coach the position he played.

Nothing leads to 100% success hence the post that I responded to was dumb.

I understand his background. Some of us have reservations about his experience and it leading to success especially with Diaz.

I also understand he is only coaching CBs and not the Ss. I still have some reservations about a guy with zero college coaching experience combined with our DC.

Someone quoted Chad Morris in this thread, I can't find it.

Chad Morris coached in HS as a HC from 1994-2009. Then he went to Tulsa.

Does anyone see a difference?

Yeah one is coordinating an entire offense. The other is coaching CBs.

That is the only thing, yup. Congrats!

I would like to add that Morris was a HC for 16 years before he went to TULSA.

Gus Malzahn went from HS to SEC OC.

I think Bishop Gorman's coach got a HEAD COACHING job at the FBS level.

Rumph has a pretty good résumé for a position coach: He played at a very high level in college, played in the NFL for 6 years, and coached a state champion at the high school level.

He's not a slam dunk hire (because of lack of experience at the college level), but nothing to get rustled over, either.
You remember why Gus got that job right? Mitch Mustain and a bunch of other dudes that Houston Nutt wanted and that Gus would deliver if given the gig. I hope Rumph delivers recruits too unlike the other HS guys we've hired.

Which I already mentioned. If Rumph brings big time studs, I am down as well.

Rising how?

He's 35, he went from not coaching, to successful hs track coach, to a state title winning head football coach, to CB college coach.. seems like that is trending UP.. aka rising

Another blah hire.

Same retards defending it.

Yep. They're actually ridiculing the guys who question the hiring of a HS coach who was renowned for winning by recruiting.

In one breath, they squawk "you have no idea if he's going to be great or not" and then in typical contradictory ****** fashion they hit us with "we know he's a major upgrade over Williams." How the fck do they know if he's an upgrade if they're telling us we have no idea how good or bad he'll be?

Rumph is producing elite DB's at AH left and right. He is coming to coach DB's. Geez, I wonder how this affects recruitin? I think it's a great move. Our DB's are taken care of for the next four years.

It's the disease of the new coaching hire. Richt could have brought in Pat Nix as OC, and they'd applaud it.

Hiring a HS corch for a position coach at the U of M was universally recognized as a bad idea 2 weeks ago.

Now? "Great hire" "local ties" "he was a great DB here".

Nobody would've applauded a Patrick Nix hire.

How on earth was a 51 year old Ice harris considered a rising star after 24 years of HS coaching and 4 seasons of adminstrative work at UM?! I think you have him confused with someone. That, or you´re just making it up. Ice was coaching in HS 10 years before you were born.

Mike Rumph was enemy number one on here, a site where people were adamant that HS coaches should be given first time gigs at UM, and where there was a specific thread suggesting him that was downvoted 20+ times.

Then he gets hired, and the same Goldenites are now loving the hire.

Lot of dudes who are followers and don't stick to their own opinions. Real estrogen style ish.

I can understand skepticism, but it's WAAAAY too early for flat-out pessimism.

Not a fan of hiring high school coaches for actual coaching positions.

This is a price you pay for not developing a good GA system. Gary Patterson and TCU has a great GA system where they constantly filter them into coach at the program. Miami, if you've got a limited budget, should be getting some of these potential former players turned HS coaches into the GA system early and then filter them into the program that way.

With that said, I hope he's a good recruiter, but his ability to coach is in question simply because, he hasn't done it. We'll see, but these don't often turn out well.
