RPO

Keeping things close to the vest on an overmatched team?

This is always the excuse when we play poorly.

Richt admitted that FAU gave them completely different looks than they showed in their first game. They were expecting 2 high safety and instead got 1 high (thus 8 in box).

We adjusted at halftime to RPO and threw bubble screens and zone reads at them. It worked.

Richt desperately tried to get Kayaa into a rhythm in the first half, but Brad wanted none of it. So Richt had to dumb it down to make sure we finished FAU off.

But this whole idea that the offense is just saving itself and will look sharp once it runs more plays, is comical. Kayaa can't even make simple throws right now. We will see 8 in the box all year if I had to guess.

Amen to the 25th Power. I would have liked to see the Halftime adjustments earlier.

We were taking chunks out of FAU's defense with RPO's. That's why I got so frustrated when we got out of the spread and went into the I-formation.

In the spread it was like stealing candy from a baby. After we succeeded with the bubble throws FAU started widening their LB's out, leaving only 5 guys in the box, so we handed the ball off to Yearby/Walton for chunks. If they moved the LB closer to the box we threw bubble again.

THAT needs to be our offense and it's not even debatable IMO. We're deadly running that stuff.

We are, until we get into the RZ, in which then when the field gets smaller we get shut down. We ran quite well out of the I. We should have passed well out of it too, but the throws were not very good and the PA was even worse. The issue I have with our PA is we NEVER let Brad keep one. Even if its a gain of one.. but if you ever want to keep that backside DE from crashing down on plays and tackling guys from behind you need to do something to keep them honest... That and our pass blocking is just plain brutal......

All in all there is enough there to work with. I think CMR just needs to get BK in a rhythm early and then let that dictate the game. But between the Pick and the big drop from Njoku on that 3rd down, BK never threw a really nicely placed ball. And if you look at that pass where he overthrew Coley, you can see him trying to will it in there when in fact he had no feel for that ball. He was searching for that one pass that had him feeling it again and never really got there... BK has plenty of talent, now its just the head game he needs to tighten up...

I dont care what people say that might not be the whole playbook but the O line is soft. We don't get push.

^This. They have kept things very simple in these first two weeks. I expect to see the playbook open up against App State next weekend. They are much better team with solid coaching.

One thing I look forward to is 2 running back formations - Yearby and Walton in the backfield together.

No need. Better off running double TE with Williams at FB and Walton to have a more powerful running game. Do power and zone runs, then mix in play pass. Almost like Stanford.

They may be saving the naked boot with brad for a more meaningful situation. If you're driving against FSU and need a goto score or critical game-sealing first down then you run that play with Brad. No need to waste it against a team that you beat by 28 on a bad day.

Nah, Richt kept things pretty simple and was a little stubborn about adjusting the game-plan too soon, because he wanted the offensive unit to execute what they had worked on without having to get too cute to beat FAU. Richt believes if you execute several plays very effectively there's no need to out-scheme anyone. I think he wanted to stick to the plan for a lot of reasons, including mastery and building confidence as an offense, but had to change when Brad/the offense didn't respond. Give credit to FAU for great preparation and execution, but if you all think the entire play book was on display or Brad forgot how to play, you are sadly mistaken.

In addition, dumbing down the playbook to master the fundamentals before getting into the more nuanced concepts is great for player development. I expect by games 6,7,8, & 9 the team will be more confident having mastered the fundamentals and gotten deeper into the playbook. The adversity was good because it exposed gaps in execution, and that's exactly what you hope to find out each week without losing games. []_[] grew up and will be better for it, but I expect Brad and the O to to show more focus and toughness this week. Great win!

We were much better running the ball out of the spread. The I-formation gave us 8/9 defenders in the box and our O-line isn't built to run against that.

I didn't see us get shut down in the redzone with the spread, I saw us score easily.

How so?

We were better running the ball with ZERO TE's on Saturday.

Did you watch any games last year? We sucked in the spread in the red zone. Walton first Td was out of spread, his second was from under center, his third was from spread but was a super human effort by him to make unblocked defenders miss, and his fourth was also from under center. Just watched a highlight and we basically had success running the same two plays with him..lol Which is not a bad thing. I just kind of chuckled when I realized the runs all kind of looked the same.

I will admit, I am a huge fan of the I, but I also recognize that players are learning in the spread now and good coaching is playing to your players strengths...

I do not have to be right, I think we are really predictable in the spread IMO. And it seems so far we hare having successes and failure in both. I am excited to see it progress. Seems like CMR has a good pulse of handling defensive looks and playing to strengths

A lot of his/our big runs came out of the spread. I don't think we're built to run into 8-man boxes. Just my opinion.

Single back with two TEs is spread? I thought spread was more shot gun 3 wide, read option, RPO. There is no run pass option if you hike the ball and cannot see the defense and hand the ball off. So yes, if you watch that highlight half of those runs are out of a single high back set up. And most also have two TE's. I watched the first quarter and every run we had out of shotgun inside the 20 got stuffed. If a single back is spread then the Lions of the 90s were a spread team?

You are 100% correct. When Brad did audible to a pass he threw a **** pick...

"Spread" means so many different things to different teams that it's pointless to try and put a specific formation to the word. In this case, "spread" simply means that we were effective running the football when we literally "spread" the defense out horizontally via our personnel placings giving the RB more space north and south. Whether we did this with Berrios or Njoku is moot in this case. Same with whether Kaaya was in shotgun or under center. I will say he was more effective in shotgun running the RPO simply because the WR screen play allowed him to just turn and fire without worrying about footwork.

Just googled spread offense, clicked on images. Yep every single one had the qb in the shotgun....

SMH. Google? Really? LOL

Spead doesn't = gun

You can run spread and be under center or in the pistol.

The reason you saw pics of offenses in the gun is because nobody really runs spread under center. There's no benefit to it.
